Mammalian metallothionein is remarkable in its metal binding properties: well-characterized species exist for metal to sulfur ratios of M7S20, M12S20, and M18S20, where M = Cd(ll), Zn(ll), Hg(ll), Ag(I), Au(I), and Cu(I). Circular dichroism and luminescence spectra provide rich details of a complicated metal binding chemistry when metals are added directly to the metal free- or zinc-containing protein. CD spectral data unambiguously identify key metal to protein stoichiometric ratios that result in well-defined structures. Emission spectra in the 450-750 nm region have been reported for metallothioneins containing Ag(I), Au(I), and Cu(I). The luminescence of Cu-MT can also be detected directly from mammalian and yeast cells. Qualitative and quantitative interpretations show that the final structure adopted by Ag-MT is not the same as that formed by Cu(I) ions in Cu-MT. XAFS structural data are reported for a number of metallothioneins, including Ag12-MT and Ag17-MT. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry provides details on the species formed when Ag(I) binds to metallothionein. Mass spectral data are reported for metal-free MT 2A and Agn-MT (n = 14-18).

Two new flavonol glycosides, rhamnocitrin 3- O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside (1) and quercetin 3- O-6- Z- p-coumaroyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→2)-α-L-rhamnopyranoside (2), along with 3 flavonol glycosides, isoquercitrin (3), rutin (4), and quercetin 3- O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-galactopyranoside (5), and two known sesquiterpenes, alismol (6) and spathulenol (7), were isolated from the leaves of Phoebe poilanei Kosterm. Their chemical structures were elucidated by analyses of their high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectral data and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral data and comparison with those reported in the literature. Two sesquiterpenes 6 and 7 were found to exhibit moderate cytotoxic activity with IC50 values ranging from 21.6 to 29.8 µM.

The reversible unfolding of metallo-β-lactamase from Chryseobacterium meningosepticum (BlaB) by guanidinium hydrochloride is best described by a three-state model including folded, intermediate, and unfolded states. The transformation of the folded apoenzyme into the intermediate state requires only very low denaturant concentrations, in contrast to the Zn2-enzyme. Similarly, circular dichroism spectra of both BlaB and metallo-β-lactamase from Bacillus cereus 569/H/9 (BcII) display distinct differences between metal-free and Zn2-enzymes, indicating that the zinc ions affect the folding of the proteins, giving a larger α-helix content. To identify the regions of the protein involved in this zinc ion-induced change, a hydrogen deuterium exchange study with matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization tandem time of flight mass spectrometry on metal-free and Zn1- and Zn2-BcII was carried out. The region spanning the metal binding metallo-β-lactamases (MBL) superfamily consensus sequence His-X-His-X-Asp motif and the loop connecting the N- and C-terminal domains of the protein undergoes a zinc ion-dependent structural change between intrinsically disordered and ordered states. The inherent flexibility even appears to allow for the formation of metal ion-bridged protein-protein complexes which may account for both electrospray ionization-mass spectroscopy results obtained upon variation of the zinc/protein ratio and stoichiometry-dependent variations of 199mHg-perturbed angular correlation of γ-rays spectroscopic data. We suggest that this flexible “zinc arm” motif, present in all the MBL subclasses, is disordered in metal-free MBLs and may be involved in metal ion acquisition from zinc-carrying molecules different from MBL in an “activation on demand” regulation of enzyme activity.

We report here an easy, efficient and green synthetic protocol for the (E)-1-aryl-3-(2-morpholinoquinolin-3-yl)prop-2-en-1-ones by the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of 2-morpholinoquinoline-3-carbaldehyde and different substituted acetophenones by using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (Bmim)BF4. The compounds were characterized by using 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectral data and screened there in vitro antimicrobial activity against different bacterial and fungal organisms.

The title compound was obtained in high yield in the reaction between tryptamine and naproxen. The newly synthesized naproxen derivative was fully analyzed and characterized via 1H, 13C-NMR, UV, IR, and mass spectral data.

Using environmentally friendly conditions, the nucleophilic ring-opening reaction of 6-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hex-3-en-2-ol with 1-methyl-1H-tetrazole-5-thiol provided a novel thiol-incorporated aminocyclopentitol, (1R,4S,5S)-5-((3-hydroxypropyl)amino)-4-((1-methyl-1H-tetrazol-5-yl)thio)cyclopent-2-en-1-ol, in excellent yield (95%). The newly synthesized compound was analyzed and characterized via 1H, 13C-NMR, HSQC, and mass spectral data.

The negative‒ion chemical ionization mass spectra of a group of structural isomers of amphetamine have been studied using carbon dioxide as the reagent gas. Characteristic and reproducible differences are observed for each member of the set implying that this technique offers a means of distinguishing among groups of amphetamine isomers. Characteristic adducts to the molecular ion are observed in the form (M–[H]+[O]) and (M–[H]+[CO2]). Descriptions of some fragments are given based on the mass spectral behaviour of a set of analogue compounds and the results of oxygen-18 labelled carbon dioxide reagent gas experiments. Contents of the carbon dioxide plasma and their impact on various analytes is also discussed.

In this work, properties of Nd3+ in Gd2O3-CaO-SiO2-B2O3 glass systems with composition 25Gd2O3-10CaO-10SiO2-(55-x)B2O3-xNd2O3 where x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mol% were investigated. The optical absorption spectra show peaks at 4F3/2 (877 nm) , 4F5/2+2H9/2 (802 nm), 4F7/2+4S3/2 (743 nm), 4F9/2 (682 nm), 2H11/2 (627 nm), 2G7/2 +4G5/2 (582 nm), 4G7/2 +2K13/2 (527 nm), 4G11/2 (481 nm), 2P1/2 (427 nm) and 2L15/2 + 4D1/2 + 1I11/2+ 4D5/2+ 4D3/2 (355 nm) reflecting the Nd3+ ions in glass matrices. The densities were increased with increasing of Nd2O3 concentration. This indicates the increase of the molecular weight by the replacement of B2O3 with a heavier Nd2O3 oxide in the glass. The upconversion luminescence spectra show bands at 393 nm for all Nd2O3 concentration and the strongest intensity from 2.5 % mol of Nd2O3 was obtained. For NIR luminescence, the intensity of Nd3+ emission spectra increases with increasing concentrations of Nd3+ up to 1.5 mol% and beyond 1.5 mol% the concentration quenching is observed.

AbstractWe have developed an apparatus for polarized cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy combined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), that enables us to obtain simultaneously structural data in higher spatial resolution by TEM and polarized luminescence spectra by CL of the same microscopic area. The polarized-CL/TEM method is very useful to study the optical properties of low-dimensional microstructures in semiconducting materials. We have applied the method to examine the optical property of antiphase boundaries in CuPt-ordered GaInP2 and found, for the first time, the polarized light emission from the APBs whose habit planes are parallel to the (T11) and (1T0) atomic planes.
