The palm Butia marmorii Noblick was described in 2006 and has been found to date in only two populations in Paraguay. It is a species threatened mainly due to habitat loss and its ecology is largely unknown.  Here we performed a potential distribution analysis, providing data about its distribution and ecology.  This work was carried out in the Alto Paraná Department, eastern Paraguay, South America.  We analyzed satellite images, in conjunction with a multi-temporal analysis using the sensors Landsat 1-MSS,5-TM,8-OLI, of the years 1973, 1984, 2002, 2012 and 2013; and a posterior visual interpretation of an ASTER ASTGTM2 radar image.  The final step was an in situ visual verification.  We registered 27 potential sites of distribution for Butia marmorii, finding it present in four sites, two of them with limited anthropogenic impacts.  We found a density of 0.0054 to 0.11 individuals/m2, and associations with the congener B. paraguayensis.  These new Paraguayan populations of Butia marmorii provide verifiable data demonstrating that anthropogenic impact is the principal threat to the species.  Here we found that the situation of B. marmorii is even worse than supposed before, and hence we consider the species to be Critically Endangered.

This work focuses on the study of land subsidence processes by means of multi-temporal and multi-frequency InSAR techniques. Specifically, we retrieve the long-term evolution (2003–2018) of the creeping phenomenon producing ground fissuring in the Ciudad Guzmán (Jalisco state, Mexico) urban area. The city is located on the northern side of the Volcan de Colima area, one of the most active Mexican volcanoes. On September 21 2012, Ciudad Guzmán was struck by ground fissures of about 1.5 km of length, causing the deformation of the roads and the propagation of fissures in adjacent buildings. The field surveys showed that fissures follow the escarpments produced during the central Mexico September 19 1985 Mw 8.1 earthquake. We extended the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometric monitoring starting with the multi-temporal analysis of ENVISAT and COSMO-SkyMed datasets, allowing the monitoring of the observed subsidence phenomena affecting the Mexican city. We processed a new stack of Sentinel-1 TOPSAR acquisition mode images along both descending and ascending paths and spanning the 2016–2018 temporal period. The resulting long-term trend observed by satellites, together with data from volcanic bulletin and in situ surveys, seems to suggest that the subsidence is due to the exploitation of the aquifers and that the spatial arrangement of ground deformation is controlled by the position of buried faults.

The relation between proliferation and apoptosis was studied in colorectal mucosal biopsies (N=41), tubular adenomas (TA) (N=104) and tubulovillous adenomas (TVA) (N=34) from 37 FAP patients. Proliferative activity was determined by cell cycle distribution analysis. In addition, transcriptional capacity was determined by chromatin in situ testing. For both, DNA flow cytometry was used. Cycling cells were identified by immunohistochemical staining with monoclonal antibody Ki67. The existence of subdiploid apoptotic cells was derived from DNA and/or DNA/protein patterns. In a follow‐up group, the mucosa is characterised by a balance between proliferation (S % + G2M % = 19) and apoptotic cells (% = 17). The percentage of Ki67 positive cells (16%) corresponds to the percentages mentioned above. In TA, the amount of apoptotic cells remains unaltered, in TVA it decreases to 8%. At the same time, the percentage of Ki67 positive cells increases significantly in both TA and TVA (39%, 42%). With patients who underwent surgery due to clinical signs without histological evidence for malignancy, apoptotic cells in TA continue to decrease significantly (9%), without any changes in cycling cells. Only in the carcinoma‐bearing bowel, cycling cells increase to 52%. Here, the percentage of apoptotic cells in TVA reaches the lowest level (5%). A connection between proliferation and apoptosis was observed in mucosa and TVA. The process of tumorigenesis is characterised by a stepwise increase in resistance to apoptosis followed by an increase in cycling cells.

Abstract. The aim of this study is to quantify the actual urbanization activity near the catchment area in the urban area of interest located in the vicinity of the Agriokalamin River area of Kissonerga Village in Paphos District. Remotely sensed data such as aerial photos, Landsat-5/7 TM/ETM+ and Quickbird image data have been used to track the urbanization activity from 1963 to 2008. In-situ GPS measurements have been used to locate in-situ the boundaries of the catchment area. The results clearly illustrate that tremendous urban development has taken place ranging from 0.9 to 33% from 1963 to 2008, respectively. A flood risk assessment and hydraulic analysis were also performed.

Image-sharpening process integrates lower spatial resolution multispectral bands with higher spatial resolution panchromatic band to produce multispectral bands with finer spatial detail called pan-sharpened image. Although the pan-sharpened image can greatly assist the process of information extraction using visual interpretation, the benefit and setback of using pan-sharpened image on the accuracy of digital classification for mapping remain unclear. This research aimed at 1) highlighting the issue of using pan-sharpened image to perform benthic habitats mapping and 2) comparing the accuracy of benthic habitats mapping using original and pan-sharpened bands. In this study, Quickbird image was used and Kemujan Island was selected as the study area. Two levels of hierarchical classification scheme of benthic habitats were constructed based on the composition of in situ benthic habitats. PC Spectral sharpening method was applied on Quickbird image. Image radiometric corrections, PCA transformation, and image classifications were performed on both original and pan-sharpened image. The results showed that the accuracy of benthic habitats classification of pan-sharpened image (maximum overall accuracy 64.28% and 73.30% for per-pixel and OBIA, respectively) was lower than the original image (73.46% and 73.10%, respectively). The main setback of using pan-sharpened image is the inability to correct the sunglint, hence adversely affects the process of water column correction, PCA transformation and image classification. This is mainly because sunglint do not only affect object’s spectral response but also the texture of the object. Nevertheless, the pan-sharpened image can still be used to map benthic habitats using visual interpretation and digital image processing. Pan-sharpened image will deliver better classification accuracy and visual appearance especially when the sunglint is low.

Previously, we reported a strong Fe-Cu synergy in CO2 hydrogenation to olefin-rich C2+ hydrocarbons over the γ-Al2O3 supported bimetallic Fe-Cu catalysts. In this work, we aimed to clarify such a synergy by investigating the catalyst structure, Fe-Cu interaction, and catalyst surface properties through a series of characterizations. H2-TPR results showed that the addition of Cu made both Fe and Cu easier to reduce via the strong interaction between Fe and Cu. It was further confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and TEM, which showed the presence of metallic Fe and Fe-Cu alloy phases in the reduced Fe-Cu(0.17) catalyst induced by Cu addition. By correlating TPD results with the reaction performance, we found that the addition of Cu enhanced both the moderately and strongly adsorbed H2 and CO2 species, consequently enhanced CO2 conversion and C2+ selectivity. Adding K increased the adsorbed-CO2/adsorbed-H2 ratio by greatly enhancing the moderately and strongly adsorbed CO2 and slightly suppressing the moderately and strongly adsorbed H2, resulting in a significantly increased O/P ratio in the produced hydrocarbons. The product distribution analysis and in situ DRIFTS suggested that CO2 hydrogenation over the Fe-Cu catalyst involved both an indirect route with CO as the primary product and a direct route to higher hydrocarbons.

Indonesia is a developing country whose construction and development are centered on the island of Java, especially in West Java Province. Sukabumi City is one of the areas in West Java. The development of urban areas is expanding due to various human needs to carry out the construction of buildings. Remote sensing that can be used to store developments with multi-temporal analysis with materials is Landsat imagery from 2001 to 2020. The method used is the Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI). The purpose of this study is to map the development of the built-up land from year to year and predict the following years. The results of the research on the significant changes in built-up land occurred between 2013-2020, while from 2001 to 2013 there was not much change. Based on the research results, the total growth of built-up land was 1.539% per year with a population growth rate of 1.4% per year. The results of the analysis show that the area of ​​land built in Sukabumi City in 2028 is 186,7194 km2 or has increased by 21,2808 km2 since 2020.

ABSTRACTThe exposure of polycarbonate to an argon plasma is studied using in situ ellipsometry from the UV to the IR, nuclear magnetic resonance and light scattering measurements. An increase in the refractive index and the existence of two populations of different molecular weights show that structural changes occur in the polymer. They are correlated with modifications at the polymer unit scale, such as formation of new polar groups and decrease in dimethyl groups. Two simultaneous reaction mechanisms must be considered to account for these changes. The adhesion of a silica layer on treated polycarbonate is then discussed.
