Abundance, relative growth and fecundity of Emerita rathbunae Schmitt, 1935 (Decapoda, Anomura, Hippidae) in the S.E. Gulf of California, Mexico

Specimens of the mole crabEmerita rathbunaeSchmitt, 1935, were collected during a one-year period along two sandy beaches in the S.E. Gulf of California, Mexico. A total of 2171 specimens were examined. Only 8% of the collected females were ovigerous. The large majority of males (95%) were collected in the sand as “free living” males, while the rest (39 individuals) were “dwarf males”, with developed genital papilla, 95% of which were found attached to females. Density for pooled samples reached an overall maximum of 309.8 orgs/m2in February and a minimum in April (65.0 orgs/m2). Females always outnumbered males, except in February. Ovigerous females were observed in the first half of the study period (February to September). Proportions of males were very similar throughout the study period, while indeterminate specimens were proportionally more abundant in its second half. Relationships between CW and CL for both males and females were highly correlated and isometric. Relationships between size and weight were highly correlated in both males and non-ovigerous females for pooled samples or for each sampling zone, and in each case growth was isometric. The number of eggs per ovigerous female varied considerably, from 910 to 22 866, and the relationship between number of eggs per batch and body size was poorly correlated. In the study area,E. rathbunaeappears to have a rather restricted reproduction period. A larger series of data combined with the analysis of other environmental factors, such as beach profiles, current patterns and primary productivity, might bring some additional information on this species biology and ecology. Due to the key role that mole crabs play in the food web of sandy beaches, special attention should be provided to this particular habitat.

SummaryThrombospondin, a trimeric glycoprotein contained in the platelet α-granules, has been proposed as a marker of in vivo platelet activation. However, it is also synthesised by a range of other cells. The extraplatelet contribution to plasma levels of thrombospondin was therefore estimated by investigating the relationship between plasma thrombospondin levels and platelet count in samples from profoundly thrombocytopenic patients with marrow hypoplasia, using the platelet-specific α-granule protein β-thromboglobulin as control. Serum concentrations of both proteins were highly correlated with platelet count, but while plasma β-thromboglobulin levels and platelet count also correlated, there was no relationship between the number of platelets and thrombospondin concentrations in plasma. Serial sampling of patients recovering from bone marrow depression indicated that the plasma thrombospondin contributed by platelets is superimposed on a background concentration of at least 50 ng/ml probably derived from a non-platelet source, and plasma thrombospondin levels do not simply reflect platelet release.

Background: Functional constipation in children is common. Management of this condition can be challenging and is often based on symptom reports. Increased, objective knowledge of colonic volume changes in constipation compared to health could provide additional information. However, very little data on paediatric colonic volume is available except from methods that are invasive or require unphysiological colonic preparations. Objectives: (1) To measure volumes of the undisturbed colon in children with functional constipation (FC) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and provide initial normal range values for healthy controls, and (2) to investigate possible correlation of colonic volume with whole gut transit time (WGTT). Methods: Total and regional (ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid, and rectum) colon volumes were measured from MRI images of 35 participants aged 7–18 years (16 with FC and 19 healthy controls), and corrected for body surface area. Linear regression was used to explore the relationship between total colon volume and WGTT. Results: Total colonic volume was significantly higher, with a median (interquartile range) of 309 mL (243–384 mL) for the FC group than for the healthy controls of 227 mL (180–263 mL). The largest increase between patients and controls was in the sigmoid colon–rectum region. In a linear regression model, there was a positive significant correlation between total colonic volume and WGTT (R = 0.56, p = 0.0005). Conclusions: This initial study shows increased volumes of the colon in children with FC, in a physiological state, without use of any bowel preparation. Increased knowledge of colonic morphology may improve understanding of FC in this age group and help to direct treatment.

This retrospective study examines the relationship between auditory steady-state evoked potential (ASSEP) thresholds determined in infancy and subsequently obtained behavioral hearing levels in children with normal hearing or varying degrees of sensorineural hearing loss. Overall, the results from 211 subjects showed that the two test techniques were highly correlated, with Pearson r values exceeding .95 at each of the audiometric test frequencies between 500 and 4000 Hz. Analysis of the findings for babies with significant hearing loss (moderate to profound levels) showed similar threshold relationships to those obtained in previous studies involving adults and older children. The results for infants with normal or near-normal hearing did, however, differ from those reported for older subjects, with behavioral thresholds typically 10 to 15 dB better than would have been predicted from their ASSEP levels.

Relation extraction is a vital task in natural language processing. It aims to identify the relationship between two specified entities in a sentence. Besides information contained in the sentence, additional information about the entities is verified to be helpful in relation extraction. Additional information such as entity type getting by NER (Named Entity Recognition) and description provided by knowledge base both have their limitations. Nevertheless, there exists another way to provide additional information which can overcome these limitations in Chinese relation extraction. As Chinese characters usually have explicit meanings and can carry more information than English letters. We suggest that characters that constitute the entities can provide additional information which is helpful for the relation extraction task, especially in large scale datasets. This assumption has never been verified before. The main obstacle is the lack of large-scale Chinese relation datasets. In this paper, first, we generate a large scale Chinese relation extraction dataset based on a Chinese encyclopedia. Second, we propose an attention-based model using the characters that compose the entities. The result on the generated dataset shows that these characters can provide useful information for the Chinese relation extraction task. By using this information, the attention mechanism we used can recognize the crucial part of the sentence that can express the relation. The proposed model outperforms other baseline models on our Chinese relation extraction dataset.

Abstract A large collection of yeast actin mutations has been previously isolated and used in numerous studies of actin cytoskeletal function. However, the various mutations have been in congenic, rather than isogenic, backgrounds, making it difficult to compare the subtle phenotypes that are characteristic of these mutants. We have therefore placed 27 mutations in an isogenic background. We used a subset of these mutants to compare the degree to which different actin alleles are defective in sporulation, endocytosis, and growth on NaCl-containing media. We found that the three phenotypes are highly correlated. The correlations are specific and not merely a reflection of general growth defects, because the phenotypes are not correlated with growth rates under normal conditions. Significantly, those actin mutants exhibiting the most severe phenotypes in all three processes have altered residues that cluster to a small region of the actin crystal structure previously defined as the fimbrin (Sac6p)-binding site. We examined the relationship between endocytosis and growth on salt and found that shifting wild-type or actin mutant cells to high salt reduces the rate of α-factor internalization. These results suggest that actin mutants may be unable to grow on salt because of additive endocytic defects (due to mutation and salt).

В статье рассматриваются взаимоотношения выдающихся музыкальных деятелей русской культуры Владимира Владимировича Щербачёва и Николая Карловича Метнера. Фактический материал анализируется на основе писем Щербачёва к жене, Марии Илларионовне, написанных в период командировки 1922-1923 годов в Пильниц под Дрезденом. В письмах раскрывается атмосфера музыкальной культуры Германии этого периода (в том числе постановка в Дрезденской опере Бориса Годунова Модеста Петровича Мусоргского). Подробно описывается процесс работы Щербачёва над партитурой монументального симфонического полотна Второй симфонии на стихи Александра Блока и приводится мнение Метнера о ней. Раскрываются музыкально-эстетические позиции Щербачёва и Метнера в отношении разных сторон техники сочинения, педагогики, исполнительского искусства. Одна из ключевых проблем сохранение традиции и радикальное новаторство, вызывавшее у Метнера весьма сложную реакцию. В целом, письма музыкантов дают возможность воссоздать живой и органичный облик двух композиторов разных творческих ориентаций, но искренне переживающих за музыкальное искусство. В конце статьи представлена роль Щербачёва в становлении ленинградской школы композиции. The article considers the relationship of outstanding music figures of the Russian culture VladimirV.Scherbachev and NikolayK.Medtner. The analyzed factual material is based on Scherbachevs letters to his wife Maria Illarionovna, written during a one-year trip to Pilnitz on the Elbe near Dresden 19221923. The letters reveal the atmosphere of musical culture of Germany of this period (including the production of Boris Godunov by Mussorgsky in the Dresden opera house). The author gives a detailed description of the process of Scherbachevs work on the score of the monumental symphonic canvas the Second Symphony on the poems by A.Blok, and Medtners opinion about it. In general, the letters of the two musicians give us an opportunity to recreate living and organic image of the two composers possessing different creative bearings, but sincerely worried about the music art.

Visual associations with auditory stimuli have been the subject of numerous studies. Colour, shape, size, and several other parameters have been linked to musical elements like timbre and pitch. In this paper we aim to examine the relationship between harmonisations with varying degrees of dissonance and visual roughness. Based on past research in which high sensory dissonance was associated with angular shapes, we argued that non-tonal and highly dissonant harmonisations will be associated with angular and rough images, while more consonant stimuli will be associated with images of low visual roughness. A fixed melody was harmonised in 7 different styles, including highly tonal, non-tonal, and random variations. Through a listening task, musically trained participants rated the stimuli in terms of enjoyment, familiarity, and matched them to images of variable roughness. The overall consonance of the stimuli was calculated using two distinct models (Wang et al., 2013; Harrison & Pearce, 2020) and a variant of the aggregate dyadic consonance index (Huron, 1994). Our results demonstrate that dissonance, as calculated by all models, was highly correlated with visual roughness, and enjoyment and familiarity followed expected patterns compared to tonal and non-tonal stimuli. In addition to sensory dissonance, however, it appears that other factors, such as the typicality of chord progressions and the sense of tonality may also influence this cross-modal interaction.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between muscle and blood lactate concentrations during progressive exercise. Seven endurance-trained male college students performed three incremental bicycle ergometer exercise tests. The first two tests (tests I and II) were identical and consisted of 3-min stage durations with 2-min rest intervals and increased by 50-W increments until exhaustion. During these tests, blood was sampled from a hyperemized earlobe for lactate and pH measurement (and from an antecubital vein during test I), and the exercise intensities corresponding to the lactate threshold (LT), individual anaerobic threshold (IAT), and onset of blood lactate accumulation (OBLA) were determined. The test III was performed at predetermined work loads (50 W below OBLA, at OBLA, and 50 W above OBLA), with the same stage and rest interval durations of tests I and II. Muscle biopsies for lactate and pH determination were taken at rest and immediately after the completion of the three exercise intensities. Blood samples were drawn simultaneously with each biopsy. Muscle lactate concentrations increased abruptly at exercise intensities greater than the “below-OBLA” stage [50.5% maximal O2 uptake (VO2 max)] and resembled a threshold. An increase in blood lactate and [H+] also occurred at the below-OBLA stage; however, no significant change in muscle [H+] was observed. Muscle lactate concentrations were highly correlated to blood lactate (r = 0.91), and muscle-to-blood lactate ratios at below-OBLA, at-OBLA, and above-OBLA stages were 0.74, 0.63, 0.96, and 0.95, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
