Abstract Automation, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology have become topics of increasing interest in both academia as well as in popular media. The goal of this article is to establish which issues are the most pressing, and what are the underlying causes of the rise of robots. I demonstrate that fears of automation are well supported by current trends of automation as well as the inherent tendency within a capitalist system to automate at the expense of workers and working wages. Additionally, I point to what appears to be a potential evolutionary divide between what Yuval Noah Harari calls the “god” class and the “useless” class. Finally, I discuss how the new role of information as the world’s most valued commodity can either exacerbate this coming divide or liberate society. I present the case that in order to diminish the negative effects we must move beyond the present capitalist economic system, towards one in which economic democracy and the free flow of information thrives.

An efficient supply chain management helps to increase the productivity of a business. Use of information technology and concepts like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cloud computing have integrated the different aspects of supply chain with its stakeholders. Published literature in the field of SCM, IT, and the pharmaceutical industry has been reviewed, and different aspects of innovation, technique, risks, advancements, factors, and models have been taken into consideration to form a comprehensive chapter focusing on the role of information technology in the supply chain management of the pharmaceutical industry. The chapter finds that IT has made a significant impact in improving the efficiency of SCM. But its successful implementation and collaboration with other firms is the key to success for an efficient SCM. Within each category, gaps have been identified.

Non-profits must continuously adapt themselves to changing circumstances, but they often lack the resources necessary to adapt successfully. This paper proposes a model to help non-profits overcome this challenge. It explains the role of information in the adaptation of complex systems and suggests a process that non-profits can follow to direct the flow of this information. The Information for Innovation Model (IIM) presented in the paper explains how the inflow and outflow of information influences a system’s adaptation. A series of steps are then proposed for the design of Communities of Practice (CoP) that can help organisations implement the model. Librarians, trained in information-seeking and focused on increasing their reach beyond the library, can support a non-profit following these steps. This paper contributes to the literature on complexity science by articulating a process that organisations can follow to influence the inflow and outflow of information. This process highlights new roles for both CoPs and librarians within non-profits. This is important because non-profits often lack resources necessary for innovation, and librarians are looking for new ways to extend their reach.

Social health awareness in the context of medical prophylaxis influences the current trends in the design of modern domestic bathrooms. The importance of the health role of the modern bathroom also results from the current social and economic situation around the world, resulting in the need for independent health control and the developing need for medical prophylaxis, taking care of immunity and psychophysical condition in the face of public health threats. Therefore, it was necessary to investigate the health factors in bathroom design based on research and analysis of literature and materials from foreign research institutes. The study concerned design possibilities in the selection of bathroom equipment elements enabling a wide range of comfort and supporting and monitoring the health of bathroom users. The research included a review and analysis of technologically advanced solutions, intelligent solutions, including Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, ensuring health prophylaxis in the home bathroom. The potential for the use of innovative technologies and the possibility of process control, easy flow of information in relation to the external environment (e.g. remote contact with a doctor) was indicated. The need for easy and intuitive use of intelligent devices was taken into account, as well as the possibility of independent, systematic control and protection of health without the need for stationary medical visits, with a view to time and safety of healthcare professionals and patients. The research results summarize the fields of medicine where smart bathroom appliances can create new opportunities to improve user health.

This paper examines the determinants of the demand for female workers, focusing on the role of information and communication technology (ICT) and offshoring. Estimating a system of variable factor demands for manufacturing industries between 1980 and 2011, we find that, whereas the ICT capital stock has significantly positive effects on the demand for low-, middle-high-, and high-skilled female workers, it has significantly negative effects on the demand for middle-low-skilled female workers. In contrast, offshoring has insignificant effects on the demand for female workers, which suggests that offshoring is at least neutral on the demand for female workers.

Ethics and information activities are related in a number of ways. This paper discusses the role of UNESCO regarding information ethics. The main commitment of UNESCO is “free flow of information and access to knowledge sources,” and the organization has held various meetings and congresses to this purpose. Then the author’s project on mental mapping is discussed. The main focus of the project is on the question how interpersonal understanding is possible, and how this question is related to the problem of how human beings make decision in moral dilemma situations. The paper ends with a discussion of what is novel about information ethics in the age of computers.

Interview with Breda Pavlič, critical researcher and former staff member of UNESCO’s Division of Free Flow of Information and Communication Policies in the 1980s (1984-1989). We discussed her path towards the critical-analysis approach to information and communication problems, the role of such analyses in the academic field of the time, as well as within the political context of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries, and their initiative in UNESCO and in the United Nations Organization for a New international information and communication order (NIICO).

In this era, people’s lives are intertwined with the Internet and digital media although society might have to bear potential negative effects of these platforms. Free flow of information and the rise of hate speech, fake news and disinformation on the Internet have no doubt increased social polarization. Furthermore, a new phenomenon has arisen, which combines hate speech with indignation or offence-taking, and that is hate spin. Hate spin uses hate speech and fake news as a weapon to gain access to political power. Hate spin is considered to be one of the biggest threats to any democratic country, including Indonesia. A relatively young democracy and its reputation for religious moderatism and diversity, Indonesia has not been immune to the hoax epidemic plaguing societies around the world recently. Scholars assume that improving digital literacy is the best solution against hate spin in Indonesia. However, the current concept of digital literacy has been limited as merely a matter of technical skill. This paper offers an analysis on how to define the contemporary digital literacy concept that has moved beyond basic Internet access, and on how the technology works and is used by political elites with evidence of computational propaganda delivered through political bots, fake accounts and false news during recent political events in Indonesia.

Today India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and with liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation it is poised to grow further. But the question arises whether we are really ready for this growth? Whether our students are skilled enough to compete worldwide and be a partner in this growth mechanism? The answer is big ‘No’. It is a fact that education, lifelong learning and training are essential, but by themselves inadequate to help individuals gain good and decent jobs. The employability scenario of graduates in India is undoubtedly an area of great concern. In recent times information Communication Technology plays an important role for the employability scenario in India. The old concepts of literate and illiterate society have been replaced by digital divided. Considering the growing demand of industry it is high time for all the students to be part of ICT driven education and training system. Further the growing demand of artificial intelligence and data analytics put the students in more challenging position to obtain a job. The present paper is a conceptual one and it will be an addition to the existing literature related to employability issues.
