Abstract This article analyses Francesco Giammaria’s Capitolium Novum, a Latin poem describing a tour of the historic center of Rome in 1933, in its historical, architectural, and intellectual contexts. It offers a detailed analysis of three key sections of the poem, which deal with the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, and the Ara dei caduti fascisti respectively. The authors show how Giammaria’s poem responds to urbanistic interventions in the city center during the ventennio, and specifically to the Fascist ‘recoding’ of the city as the ‘Third Rome’, with a narrative emphasizing the historically layered nature of Rome. Giammaria offers his own interpretation of the respective importance and interrelation of the city’s historic layers: the rhetoric of his poem is aimed at superimposing Catholic Rome over pagan Rome, and at framing all historical layers of the city, including the Fascist one, as part of its Christian mission and destiny. Thus, Capitolium novum resonates with efforts of intellectuals gathered around Carlo Galassi Paluzzi’s Istituto di Studi Romani, who aimed to promote a cultural reconciliation between Fascism and Catholicism.

In the modern era, the loss of third place in the city center, such as the city of Jakarta, has resulted in increasingly mushrooming shopping centers and increasing market gimmicks. This causes the level of social interaction between fellow humans decreases so that exclusivity is formed in each individual. In meeting social needs in that era, a social forum is needed as a place for communities to eliminate exclusivity and restore human nature which is basically a social creature that needs to interact. From this, architecture talks about ways to meet the needs of the community in the third place as a means of community existence. The presence of Art Space is intended to present communities where individuals can fuse and increase social interaction. Art Space raised the topic of art which is one of the characteristics of the Senen Kelurahan, Senen District, Central Jakarta. Art will be used as a medium and a tool to interact and communicate with each other. Making an entertainment center for art that is inclusive so that it can be enjoyed by all groups of people both artists, connoisseurs of art or the general public. The choice of performing arts is based on the high public interest in the Senen Village. The design of Art Space is designed with site analysis method so that the building pays attention to the surrounding context so as to strengthen the contextual concept. Combining typologies adapted from the habits or approaches of the needs of the surrounding community. Bluring boundaries between private closeness and public opensess. It is expected that Art Space can attract people to visit so that it presents social interaction. Keywords: Art Space; Social Interaction; Third Place Abstrak Pada era yang serba modern hilangnya third place pada pusat kota seperti kota Jakarta mengakibatkan pusat perbelanjaan semakin menjamur dan market gimmick yang terus meningkat. Hal tersebut menyebabkan tingkat interaksi sosial antara sesama manusia menurun sehingga terbentuklah eksklusifitas pada setiap individu. Dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan sosial di era tersebut, maka dibutuhkan wadah sosial sebagai wadah komunitas-komunitas untuk menghilangkan ekslusifitas dan mengembalikan hakekat manusia yang pada dasarnya adalah mahluk sosial yang perlu berinteraksi. Dari hal tersebut, arsitektur berbicara tentang cara untuk memenuhi kebutuhan komunitas pada third place sebagai sarana eksistensi masyarakat. Kehadiran Art Space dimaksudkan untuk menghadirkan komunitas-komunitas  di mana individu dapat melebur dan meningkatkan interaksi sosial. Art Space  mengangkat topik seni yang merupakan salah satu karakteristik kawasan Kelurahan Senen, Kecamatan Senen, Jakarta Pusat. Seni akan digunakan sebagai media dan alat untuk berinteraksi serta berkomunikasi antara sesama manusia. Menjadikan pusat hiburan seni yang inklusif sehingga dapat dinikmati oleh seluruh golongan masyarakat baik seniman, penikmat seni atau khalayak umum. Pemilihan jenis seni pertunjukan didasarkan oleh tingginya animo masyarakat pada Kelurahan Senen. Perancangan Art Space didesain dengan metode site analysis agar bangunan memperhatikan konteks sekitar sehingga memperkuat konsep kontekstual. Mengkombinasikan tipologi yang diadaptasi dari kebiasaan atau pendekatan kebutuhan masyarakat sekitar. Meleburkan batasan diantara private closeness dan public opensess. Diharapkan Art Space dapat menarik masyarakat untuk berkunjung sehingga menghadirkan interaksi sosial.

On July 22nd, 2001, there was the third shooting in a month. The municipality of Rotterdam declared the area around Rotterdam Centraal Station a zero-tolerance zone, installed 360o security cameras, and imposed the umpteenth ban on disreputable bars and clubs; thus, another twenty meters of boarded-up shop fronts. It was 2001; a strange year in which the rise of the right-wing populist politician Pim Fortuyn coincided with Rotterdam’s celebration of cultural diversity as the Cultural Capital of Europe and the announcement that multiculturalism was a failure in the Netherlands. And finally, there was 9/11. On the Hofplein, a major traffic junction in Rotterdam’s city center, these expressions of hope and hopelessness came into sharp focus. Citizens, in search of an appropriate city square, took to occupying the Hofplein roundabout to celebrate or to mourn. The administrative nervousness that arose in this confused period was repeatedly expressed in even stricter policies to keep the city and especially its streets ‘clean, well maintained, and safe.’ Ensuring a lively atmosphere on Rotterdam’s streets was difficult enough, never mind the additional measures being deployed to systematically remove the last traces of the informal use of the public domain.

Until the mid-20th century, the historic center of Seoul was divided by a stream in a west-east direction. By the 1950s, the water of the stream had become so polluted that only the full coverage of it could solve the resulting problems. An elevated highway was built in its place. At the turn of the millennium, as part of the rehabilitation of the district, the former creek was excavated, the road demolished and an artificial natural environment created. Although the reconstruction was intended to strengthen the historic character of the city center, the artificial watercourse and the emphasized role of tourism discredited the project to socially-minded critics. In this study, we present all of this, but go one step further and interpret the socio-economic damage resulting from the disintegration of local communities in the working-class neighborhood that has develop dover the decades as the cost of renewal.

Resumen: El municipio de Moratalla, ubicado en la comarca del NO de Murcia (España) presenta por sus datos respecto a la evolución poblacional una de las pocas excepciones en el conjunto regional, ya que pierde población desde al menos cuatro décadas. Esta situación significa un progresivo deterioro en la actividad económica, el envejecimiento de la población y un importante abandono del casco histórico de la ciudad, así como en una serie de pedanías localizadas en un amplio término municipal de 954,82 km2, el tercero más extenso de la Región de Murcia que está compuesta por cuarenta y cinco términos municipales. Los análisis estadísticos, cuestionario tabulados y entrevistas de carácter cualitativo a expertos locales señalan un escenario para esta ciudad y su término municipal preocupante, que en caso de que no se consiga frenar podría desembocar a medio y largo plazo en una aguda regresión social y económica de este municipio. A través de la herramienta DAFO aplicada básicamente a la promoción turística de interior se harán propuestas que contribuyan a detener la sangría demográfica, diversificando la económica local basada en el sector primario y en la salida diaria de muchos vecinos a otras localidades, donde desarrollan sus puestos de trabajo.   Palabras clave: Despoblación, vaciamiento, desarrollo local, Moratalla, estrategia territorial.   Abstract: The municipality of Moratalla, located in the NW region of Murcia (Spain) presents, due to its data regarding population evolution, one of the few exceptions in the regional set, since it has lost population for at least four decades. This situation means a progressive deterioration in economic activity, the aging of the population and a significant abandonment of the historic center of the city, as well as in a series of districts located in a large municipal area of 954.82 km2, the third largest of the Murcia Region, which is made up of forty-five municipalities. Statistical analyzes, tabulated questionnaires and qualitative interviews with local experts indicate a worrying scenario for this city and its municipal area, which in the event of failure to stop could lead in the medium and long term into an acute social and economic regression of this municipality. Through the SWOT tool applied basically to inland tourism promotion, proposals will be made that help to stop demographic bleeding, diversifying the local economy based on the primary sector and the daily departure of many residents to other locations, where they develop their jobs of work.   Key words: Depopulation, emptying, local development, Moratalla, territorial strategy.

This chapter presents the third element fundamental to an overall picture: the music itself, with specific focus on the relationship between music, text, and the city. The chapter begins with a wider discussion of music’s role in sounding urban geographies. This is then set against the indeterminacy and ambiguities of “placing” klezmer music—a result of mid-twentieth-century rupture, subsequent postwar cultural submergence, and the transnationalism of its contemporary revival. The main body of the chapter is devoted to the specific ways that the city of Berlin is articulated through its klezmer music. In order to do this, the chapter takes as its starting point sociologist Adam Krims’s flexible concept of “urban ethos,” applying this for the first time to the processes of traditional music. Through detailed analysis of a series of musical examples, it shows the important ways in which the city of Berlin is made meaningful in its klezmer music—how exactly, through both music and text, the city functions as a significant musical-semantic unit. The musicians discussed include ?Shmaltz!, Daniel Kahn, and Knoblauch Klezmer Band, and the analysis is supported by detailed transcriptions and interview material. Throughout the chapter and through the work of these different artists, certain themes reappear—themes particularly pertinent to Berlin and Jewish musical production. These include notions of escape, borders, and transgression and the dialogue between visible and hidden histories. The chapter also uses David Kaminsky’s theorization of the “New Old Europe Sound” to question and problematize some of the urban expressions discussed.

In order to achieve the objectives of Smart Cities, public administrations need to take measures to regulate mobility, which undoubtedly requires a high level of information and sensorization. Until the implementation of the connected vehicle takes place, it is still necessary to install sensors to obtain information about mobility. Bluetooth sensors are becoming a useful tool due to the low cost of equipment and installation. The use of Bluetooth sensors in cities, with short distances between sensors, makes it necessary to propose new classification algorithms that allow the trips of pedestrians and vehicles to be differentiated. This article presents the study carried out in the city of Valencia to determine the use of motor vehicles in the historic center and propose a new classification algorithm to distinguish between an onboard Bluetooth device and the same device carried by a pedestrian when it is not possible to use the travel time for the classification due to the short distance between sensors. This causes very similar or even indistinguishable travel times for vehicles and for pedestrians. We also propose an algorithm that allows vehicles to be classified according to what type of trip is made always through the historical center of Valencia, whether it is to make a shorter itinerary through the city or to access the center for any type of business. This algorithm would enable the Origin-Destination matrix of an urban network with short distances between sensors if they are available in all entries and exits. Likewise, the results obtained have allowed to positively evaluate the algorithm defined to distinguish between trips made by a pedestrian or a vehicle in a city, using the MAC address of their mobile devices with very short distances among sensors. The results of this study show that it is possible to use Bluetooth technology, with low cost installations, to evaluate the use of the city by motor vehicles.

Barcelona, and especially, its historic center, has undergone a profound transformation from an industrial city to a global tourism and services center. Some authors insist on the destructive nature of the urban regeneration of the historic Barcelona district of Raval as a process of de-identification of the city center or as an intentional falsification of its identity to turn it into a tourist space. However, as we discuss in this article, urban branding and urban change projects should address not only the infrastructural issues of transformation, but also the development of new urban branding based on recreating a memory of the place. Thus, in the case of Raval, the urban and cultural planning led by the local government and the development of cultural institutions took place as part of the construction and revitalization of the identity of the neighborhood from that of a barrio chino red-light district stigma to one of a new cultural quarter.

With Adolf Hitler coming to power in January 1933, the National Socialists staged their dominance in the city center of Breslau by using various visual and auditory elements - including swastikas, singing, marching, dispersing rumors - to spread their influence and keep the people under control. How were these changes in the city soundscape used for social exclusion and territory-marking? How were they experienced by the Jewish population and how can they be related to questions of identity and (non-)belonging? Addressing these questions with the corpus of autobiographical writings – both diaries and autobiographies – from Jewish victims from the city of Breslau will be the main aim of this article. This study of literary testimonies will focus on the constant and changing sounds of propaganda in Breslau, sound technologies such as radio and loudspeakers used for propaganda, and the relation between sound, identity, and trauma. High rise buildings is the phenomenon of XXI century, the expression of city’s economic and political power. This is the reflection of contemporary, modern and attractive city. Very often high rise buildings, who are characterized by a unique morphology, the parameters of high, density and intensity, are built near the historic center areas and cause irreversible visual impact on the historic sites, fundamentally altering the silhouette of the city. As a result, new problems and challenges appear. In this article the evolution of high rise buildings according to London, Jerusalem, Ottawa, Vilnius cities examples is analysed, the latest methodological principles which are applicable to control the development of high-rise buildings in the central parts of the city, while providing preservation and representation of cultural heritage are discussed. The latest computer technologies which are applied in urban regulations are presented. In case of Lithuania, high-rise building spatial development, general, spatial planning documents, urban design concepts, and monitoring of virtual city panoramas are reviewed. Comparative analysis in order to find out the essential methodological differences between cities regulation systems is done. Aukštybiniai pastatai – XXI a. fenomenas, miestų ekonominės, politinės galios išraiška. Tai šiuolaikinio, modernaus ir patrauklaus miesto atspindys. Labai dažnai aukštybinis užstatymas, pasižymintis savita morfologija, aukščio ir tūrio parametrais, dideliu užstatymo tankiu ir intensyvumu, atsiranda istorinių centrų prieigose, sukeldamas negrįžtamą vizualinį poveikį istoriniam paveldui, iš esmės pakeisdamas miesto siluetą. Dėl to atsiranda naujų problemų ir uždavinių. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama aukštybinių pastatų reglamentavimo evoliucija pagal Londono, Jeruzalės, Otavos ir Vilniaus miestų pavyzdį. Norint suvaldyti aukštybinių pastatų plėtrą šių miestų centrinėse dalyse, taikomi naujausi metodologiniai principai, numatant išsaugoti ir reprezentuoti ir kultūros paveldo objektus. Aptariamos naujausių kompiuterinių technologijų taikymo galimybės reglamentuojant miestus. Lietuvos atveju apžvelgiama Vilniaus miesto aukštybinių pastatų statybos raida, bendrojo, specialiojo planavimo dokumentai, parengtos koncepcijos, virtualių miesto panoramų monitoringas. Atliekama lyginamoji analizė, norint išsiaiškinti esminius metodologijų ir reglamentavimo skirtumus miestuose.
