Mining is impact intensive regardless of commodity and scale. A socially responsible mining company, at a minimum, does not knowingly irreparably harm the community's ability to sustain itself after the mine closes. This chapter examines the mining sector in the Philippines: the public concerns, CSR responses and the challenges mining companies face in the country. Information was gathered through a review of academic and grey literature, key informant interviews and content analysis of Sustainability / CSR Reports. Many of the companies invest in the community as well as minimise their environmental impacts. A few invest in the community but appear to ignore people's right to a healthy environment. The chapter argues that mining can become an instrument for inclusive growth in the Philippines only if there is social peace, and that a streamlined and transparent mining policy regime, equitable benefits sharing and demilitarisation of mining areas will help bring this about.

Both rent seeking and mining policy are two interesting discourses which have enriched the Indonesian policy studies within last two decades. One of prominent problems in this sector is formulation policy process of mining permit (IUP). The concern of mining sector is because the huge economic incentive behind mining business including coal mining. Since the economic incentive is extremely high, the rent seeking is getting higher and more competitive. The competition on rent seeking contest is developed in different policy formulation stages through the elites of business people and bureaucrats. The consequences are the objectivity on issuing the coal mining policy, including extra regulation about surveyors.  The policy formulation in this very case produces the dynamic and complex rent seeking activity among the main players. This study is aimed to reveal the case of rent seeking using surveyors on coal mining policy. Using qualitative method and non positivist approach, this case of study was one of five studies that tried to understand the social relationship among the policy actors during mining policy formulation.Findings in the study were: (i) the role of surveyors as “third person” as mediator who played prominent roles in delivering the interest and determined the data through surveyor’s report, (ii) bargaining power of the businessman to get access in penetrating the bureaucracy through bribing and lobbying, and (iii) the role of bureaucrat in manipulating regulation to accommodate their interest through extra regulation making.

The lauded Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP) has achieved much in stimulating private sector investment in the renewable energy market in South Africa. Yet, 95% of electricity generated is still from a single source, the state-owned utility Eskom. This paper set out to explore the policy sphere governing electricity generation and identifying possible avenues that can contribute to a more vibrant solar energy market in the most solar abundant province of South Africa, the Northern Cape Province. Licensed mines were identified as low hanging fruit due to a large policy overlap and leeway within existing mining policy. A solar audit of these areas was performed, based on accepted multi-criteria decision analysis techniques, and found that a potential 369 TWh to 679 TWh per annum can be generated, exceeding South Africa’s current electricity usage.

Subject The recovery in nickel prices this year after a 40% drop in 2015 and the likelihood that they will continue to trend upwards. Significance President Rodrigo Duterte's administration has closed around one-quarter of the mines in the Philippines for environmental reasons since taking office in June. This, combined with rising demand from Chinese real estate, has sharply boosted nickel prices. However, at 11,250 dollars per tonne, the steelmaking ingredient remains almost 80% below the May 2007 all-time high of 51,800 dollars per tonne and around 40% below the levels reached after Indonesia banned ore exports in 2014. There is substantial uncertainty over supply from Indonesia and the Philippines. Indonesia could start exporting unprocessed minerals again, while the Philippines could reopen many of the mines it has shut down. Impacts Nigeria has discovered a hitherto undocumented style of high-grade native nickel -- eventually this could put downward pressure on prices. The Philippines is threatening to close more mines due to environment concerns -- global nickel prices could surge higher. Indonesia has banned metal ore exports since 2014 to encourage firms to build smelters but rumours abound that Jakarta may lift the ban. Axiom Mining is studying the feasibility of a Solomon Islands direct shipping ore project that could compete with neighbouring exporters.

The life of a farmer is very different due to the implementation of the mining policy.
