The idea of self-sufficient community develops as the awareness of protecting the environment arises. Due to the differences in socio-cultural backgrounds, a community could become less cohesive. Thus, communal– based activities should be implemented in a community to inculcate community spirit and to promote collective living. To achieve this, housing schemes should be provided with collective spaces for deßned communal activities. Universal Housing Design principles can be implemented to the layout plans, where the needs of diverse people and abilities over time are addressed. The paper advocates collective living strategies and Universal Housing Design principles towards achieving a self-sufßcient community. Many important design concepts have an unfixed format in current housing design. The fragmentation and seemingly uncontrolled expansion of cities question the definition of the current city. On a smaller scale there is nowadays no common idea of what a dwelling should be, in terms of image, spatial properties, construction or function. Flexibility is a key word in housing design. ‘The architectural view is increasingly shifting from its métier propre, that of ordering, towards change, towards an intellectual grasp of the unstable’ (Wohlhage, 1999). At the intermediary scale where the flexible dwelling and the cityscape meet, descriptions like ‘enclave’, ‘ensemble’ and ‘estate’ are in vogue. Such terminology has insufficient architectural precision to be credible as an answer to current urban problems. The instability of our cities is not that new – and cannot be an excuse for a professional attitude where anything goes.

With the introduction of field-emission sources and “immersion-type” objective lenses, the resolution obtainable with modern scanning electron microscopes is approaching that obtainable in STEM and TEM-but only with specific types of specimens. Bulk specimens still suffer from the restrictions imposed by internal scattering and the need to be conducting. Advances in coating techniques have largely overcome these problems but for a sizeable body of specimens, the restrictions imposed by coating are unacceptable.For such specimens, low voltage operation, with its low beam penetration and freedom from charging artifacts, is the method of choice.Unfortunately the technical dificulties in producing an electron beam sufficiently small and of sufficient intensity are considerably greater at low beam energies — so much so that a radical reevaluation of convential design concepts is needed.The probe diameter is usually given by

An accurate understanding of users' needs is essential for the development of innovative products. This article presents an exploratory method of user centered research in the context of the design process of technological products, conceived from the demands of a large information technology company. The method is oriented - but not restricted - to the initial stages of the product development process, and uses low-resolution prototypes and simulations of interactions, allowing users to imagine themselves in a future context through fictitious environments and scenarios in the ambit of ideation. The method is effective in identifying the requirements of the experience related to the product’s usage and allows rapid iteration on existing assumptions and greater exploration of design concepts that emerge throughout the investigation.

Residential architecture has one of the most conservative styles based on its specifics. However, today this type of architecture seeks to actively respond to changes in the modern world. These changes are caused by multiple factors, among them are: technological and information progress; lack of resources and environmental pollution; military conflicts and population migration etc. The purpose of this article is to summarize the experience of the Department of Architectural Environment of Lviv Polytechnic National University over housing issues and outline the methodological principles of innovation in designing both individual houses and the architectural environment of residential formations. While writing this article, we analyzed the 15-year experience of Architectural Environment's Department diploma projects. The unique feature of these projects is the priority on the design of the environment. The evolution of diploma project topics is revealed on multiple distinctive examples such as the reconstruction of old buildings in Lviv and the construction of prefabricated homes and container-type housing. Futuristic settlements are represented in projects such as “The Ocean Settlements” and “Prykarpatsk - the City of Future”. Research projects were developed to study current trends in housing design and the impact of innovative technologies on planning decisions. These projects discoursed the protection of housing from traffic noise and issues related to environmental preservation. Innovative architectural ideas of future housing, developed by students in these projects, are based on a combination of aesthetic, technical, and social components of architecture. The conclusion indicates that when educating future architects, it is important to teach them the basics of the craft, as well as the ability to defend their innovative ideas. The emphasis is placed on the importance of educating the architect's personal responsibility for their own design solutions. It is stated that professional motivation and the ability to constantly renew previously acquired knowledge and skills will be among the main tasks in training future architects.

Aluminium based composites exhibit many attractive material properties such as increased stiffness, wear resistance, specific strength and vibration damping and decreased co-efficient of thermal expansion compared with the conventional aluminium alloys. Aluminium Matrix Composites consist of non-metallic reinforcement which offers advantageous properties over base material. Reinforcements like SiC, B4C and Al2O3 are normally preferred to improve the mechanical properties. Here Aluminum LM25 is selected as matrix material while Silicon carbide and Boron carbide are selected as reinforcement material. The fabrication of aluminium matrix was done by stir casting method. In the present study an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of three major stir casting parameters (stir speed, stir duration and preheated temperature of reinforcement material) on stir casting of Aluminium LM25 - SiC - B4C composite. Experiments were conducted based on Taguchi methodology. Taguchi quality design concepts of L9 orthogonal array has been used to determine S/N ratio and through S/N ratio a set of optimum stir casting parameters were obtained. The experimental results confirmed the validity of Taguchi method for enhancing tensile strength of castings.
