The development and current state of the linguistic landscape – the case of the Wymysorys languageWymysorys is a micro-language with Germanic roots spoken by the residents of Wilamowice, a small Silesian town located between Oświęcim and Bielsko-Biała, where it was brought by settlers from Western Europe in the thirteenth century. It has been the subject of scholarly interest among specialists in a number of fields, not only linguistics and ethnology, since the early twentieth century. Following a ban issued by local authorities in 1945, the use of Wymysorys was prohibited and public manifestations of local culture were severely punished. This policy resulted in a drastic decline of the number of its users. The recent interest of researchers is focused not only on the documentation of Wymysorys or its sociolinguistic situation in the past and today, but also on the effects of its revitalization in the last decade. Despite the lack of institutional support, the users’ community has been engaged in grass-roots initiatives leading to the emergence of Wymysorys in the cultural landscape. Recent activity of its users indicates that the language has already spread beyond the circles of local activists and, after years of persecution, functions again in society, evolving and taking new forms.

This introduction gives on overview of the sub-discipline of naval history since its emergence in the early eighteenth-century. It outlines the various social, cultural and political influences that have shaped the subject over the past three centuries, and discusses its relationship with the wider historical profession. The second half of the introduction sums up the current state of naval history, describing the many historiographies that now have a bearing on how the subject is conducted. Each contribution to the volume is introduced in this context, offering a precis of the chapters that follow.

The grass-roots activities of the Independent Labour Party have been the subject of increased scrutiny from historians over the past few years, especially in the pages of this journal. Consequently we can now be a little surer about the contribution of the party to the development of an independent labour movement in Britain at the end of the nineteenth century, though with every fresh case-study a different local strategy seems to come to light. The one outstanding profile in this field is the closely observed account of the ILP in Bradford by J. Reynolds and K. Laybourn, who identify several key features in the party's growth in that city, notably the reformist nature of ILP socialism and the close associations with local trade unionism. “From the outset”, they tell us, “Bradford trade unionism and the Bradford ILP were seen as two aspects of a single homogeneous labour movement aimed at the emancipation of the working class from poverty and exploitation.”

The problem regeneration of prefabricated housing in Poland is invariably the current issue. Due to a housing shortage, the demand for apartments in pre-fab housing is still high. Western Europe has begun to struggle with this problem much earlier and has a large experience in the subject of revitalization. However, the context of socio - economic development in Poland, different from the Western European, makes the transfer of complete solutions revitalization impossible . Presented examples show different strategies used in the past and now in Europe (housing revitalization Bijlmer in Amsterdam and building in Halle - Neustadt). They were based on the demolition to a lesser or greater extent. The difficult housing situation in Poland, related to the lack of sufficient amount of housing, poor infrastructure of social housing and complicated housing ownership structure of the buildings, mostly excludes demolition. However, the quality of prefabricated housing living could be significantly improved, without the need for demolition, as evidenced by the spectacular example of the revitalization of the Parisian skyscraper Tour Bois le Prêtre.

The subject of the article relates to the current state of affairs of spatial planning system in force in Poland and the possibility to introduce positive changes to it. The author adopted the examples with which she attempts to illustrate the system from her own extensive experience in urban planning, especially in Warsaw, which was assumed as the main research field. In the article, the discussion on the abovementioned planning system starts with the statistics of urban plans made in Warsaw, the scope of social participation and analyzes conducted prior to projects. Then, focus was placed on contemporary trends: functional diversity, land and building ownership, the European Green Deal trend, as well as the necessity for management principles in urban planning and project implementations. The basic assumed research method was to compare the achievements of urban development elements in Poland with similar ones located in countries of Western Europe. In the conclusions, the final summary is presented. It consists in the author’s own recommendations for corrective action for functioning of the spatial planning system in Poland.

Since its emergence, framing has established itself as one of the most prominent areas of study within the political communication literature. Simply defined, frames are acts of communication that present a certain interpretation of the world that can change the ways in which people understand, define and evaluate issues and events. But while scholarly understanding of framing as a concept has been refined as a consequence of many years of constructive debate, framing methodology has evolved little since the introduction of the concept several decades ago. As a consequence, the methods employed to study and understand framing effects have not kept up with more modern conceptualizations of framing and have struggled to meaningfully contribute to framing theory on the whole. Specifically, analyses of the framing literature over the past two decades suggest framing studies often fall short in properly distinguishing framing effects from broader persuasion and information effects and the current state of the literature—characterized by inconsistencies and idiosyncrasies across individual works—has made generalization difficult, hampering further theoretical development. In light of these concerns, framing scholars must utilize research approaches that allow for a more precise understanding of the mechanisms by which framing effects occur and identify strategies by which broader insights may be gleaned from both current and future work on the subject in order to enrich framing theory moving forward.

Levodopa remains the primary drug for controlling motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease through the whole course, but over time, complications develop in the form of dyskinesias, which gradually become more frequent and severe. These abnormal, involuntary, hyperkinetic movements are mainly characteristic of the ON phase and are triggered by excess exogenous levodopa. They may also occur during the OFF phase, or in both phases. Over the past 10 years, the issue of levodopa-induced dyskinesia has been the subject of research into both the substrate of this pathology and potential remedial strategies. The purpose of the present study was to review the results of recent research on the background and treatment of dyskinesia. To this end, databases were reviewed using a search strategy that included both relevant keywords related to the topic and appropriate filters to limit results to English language literature published since 2010. Based on the selected papers, the current state of knowledge on the morphological, functional, genetic and clinical features of levodopa-induced dyskinesia, as well as pharmacological, genetic treatment and other therapies such as deep brain stimulation, are described.

This chapter places Italy's 1970s within a broad continuum in post-war Western Europe, in which wartime schisms were silenced and shelved, only to reappear decades later into a transformed cultural landscape. An attendant sense of national 'taking stock' manifested itself in an acute awareness of the weight of the past, and of the present moment's significance as a turning point in Italian history. The chapter analyses this point in detail by looking at the influence of the USA in the post-war years, with a particular focus on Italy's film industry. As a barometer for the intimate economic and cultural relationship between the two nations, Italian cinema embodied wider tensions between the local and the global, and the 'crime film' is taken as a case in point.

The name and the works of Roberto Caracciolo have been well known for some time to those involved in the study of medieval Hungarian literature. He is recognised as one of the major sources for the Codex Érdy. In the past few months, we have discovered and examined a copy of Roberto Caracciolo’s De laudibus sanctorum, which supports the argument that this collection was not only a significant work of reference in Western Europe, but it proved useful for preachers in Hungary as well. The 1489 edition of De laudibus sanctorum published in Venice by Georgius Arriuabenus features an entry that lists the various religious festivals where the owner of the volume had preached, the topics of his sermons and the sources of his inspiration. There is an explicit reference to the time and place of the entry: 1495–1496, Pécs. In my study I present and discuss this unique document which justifies and supplements what we already know in the field of ars compilandi. The short drafts for sermons reveal which reference books were used by the preacher. The divisions point out the most important themes of the sermons, which can be compared with the content of the original versions. Furthermore, we can identify the method with which the subject matter was arranged and organised into a complete sermon.
