AbstractA tornadic vortex signature (TVS) is a degraded Doppler velocity signature that occurs when the tangential velocity core region of a tornado is smaller than the effective beamwidth of a sampling Doppler radar. Early Doppler radar simulations, which used a uniform reflectivity distribution across an idealized Rankine vortex, showed that the extreme Doppler velocity peaks of a TVS profile are separated by approximately one beamwidth. The simulations also indicated that neither the size nor the strength of the tornado is recoverable from a TVS. The current study was undertaken to investigate how the TVS might change if vortices having more realistic tangential velocity profiles were considered. The one-celled (axial updraft only) Burgers–Rott vortex model and the two-celled (annular updraft with axial downdraft) Sullivan vortex model were selected. Results of the simulations show that the TVS peaks still are separated by approximately one beamwidth—signifying that the TVS not only is unaffected by the size or strength of a tornado but also is unaffected by whether the tornado structure consists of one or two cells.

Abstract A tornadic vortex signature (TVS) is a degraded Doppler velocity signature of a tornado that occurs when the core region of a tornado is smaller than the half-power beamwidth of the sampling Doppler radar. Soon after the TVS was discovered in the mid-1970s, simulations were conducted to verify that the signature did indeed represent a tornado. The simulations, which used a uniform reflectivity distribution across a Rankine vortex model, indicated that the extreme positive and negative Doppler velocity values of the signature should be separated by about one half-power beamwidth regardless of tornado size or strength. For a Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) with an effective half-power beamwidth of approximately 1.4° and data collected at 1.0° azimuthal intervals, the two extreme Doppler velocity values should be separated by 1.0°. However, with the recent advent of 0.5° azimuthal sampling (“superresolution”) by WSR-88Ds at lower elevation angles, some of the extreme Doppler velocity values unexpectedly were found to be separated by 0.5° instead of 1.0° azimuthal intervals. To understand this dilemma, the choice of vortex model and reflectivity profile is investigated. It is found that the choice of vortex model does not have a significant effect on the simulation results. However, using a reflectivity profile with a minimum at the vortex center does make a difference. The revised simulations indicate that it is possible for the distance between the peak Doppler velocity values of a TVS to be separated by 0.5° with superresolution data collection.

Abstract This is the first in a three-part series of papers that present the first applications of principal component analysis (PCA) to Doppler radar data. Although this novel approach has potential applications to many types of atmospheric phenomena, the specific goal of this series is to describe and verify a methodology that establishes the position and radial extent of the core region of atmospheric vortices. The underlying assumption in the current application is that the streamlines of the nondivergent component of the horizontal wind are predominantly circular, which is a characteristic often observed in intense vortices such as tropical cyclones. The method employs an S2-mode PCA on the Doppler velocity data taken from a single surveillance scan and arranged sequentially in a matrix according to the range and azimuth coordinates. Part I begins the series by examining the eigenvectors obtained from such a PCA applied to a Doppler velocity model for a modified, Rankine-combined vortex, where the ratio of the radius of maximum wind to the range from the radar to the circulation center is varied over a wide range of values typically encountered in the field. Results show that the first two eigenvectors within the eigenspace of range coordinates represent over 99% of the total variance in the data. It is also demonstrated that the coordinates of particular cusps in the curves of the eigenvector coefficients plotted against their indices are geometrically related to both the position of circulation center and the radius of maximum wind.

Abstract For nonconvective, steady light rain with rain rates <5 mm h−1 the mean Doppler velocity of raindrop spectra was found to be constant below the melting band, when the drop-free fall speed was adjusted for pressure. The Doppler radar–weighted raindrop diameters varied from case to case from 1.5 to 2.5 mm while rain rates changed from 1.2 to 2.9 mm h−1. Significant changes of advected velocity moments were observed over periods of 4 min. These findings were corroborated by three independent systems: a Doppler radar for establishing vertical air speed and mean terminal drop speeds [using extended Velocity Azimuth Display (EVAD) analyses], a Joss–Waldvogel disdrometer at the ground, and a Particle Measuring System (PMS) 2-DP probe flown on an aircraft. These measurements were supported by data from upper-air soundings. The reason why inferred raindrop spectra do not change with height is the negligible interaction rate between raindrops at low rain rates. At low rain rates, numerical box models of drop collisions strongly support this interpretation. It was found that increasing characteristic drop diameters are correlated with increasing rain rates.

Abstract The balanced and unbalanced aspects of tropical cyclone (TC) intensification are revisited with the balanced contribution diagnosed with the outputs from a full-physics model simulation of a TC using the Sawyer–Eliassen (SE) equation. The results show that the balanced dynamics can well capture the secondary circulation in the full-physics model simulation even in the inner-core region in the boundary layer. The balanced dynamics can largely explain the intensification of the simulated TC. The unbalanced dynamics mainly acts to prevent the boundary layer agradient flow in the inner-core region from further intensification. Although surface friction can enhance the boundary layer inflow and make the inflow penetrate more inward into the eye region, contributing to the eyewall contraction, the net dynamical effect of surface friction on TC intensification is negative. The sensitivity of the balanced solution to the procedure used to ensure the ellipticity condition for the SE equation is also examined. The results show that the boundary layer inflow in the balanced response is very sensitive to the adjustment to inertial stability in the upper troposphere and the calculation of radial wind at the surface with relatively coarse vertical resolution in the balanced solution. Both the use of the so-called global regularization and the one-sided finite-differencing scheme used to calculate the surface radial wind in the balanced solution as utilized in some previous studies can significantly underestimate the boundary layer inflow. This explains why the boundary layer inflow in the balanced response is too weak in some previous studies.

AbstractSingle-Doppler radar data are often missing in important regions of a severe storm due to low return power, low signal-to-noise ratio, ground clutter associated with normal and anomalous propagation, and missing radials associated with partial or total beam blockage. Missing data impact the ability of WSR-88D algorithms to detect severe weather. To aid the algorithms, we develop a variational technique that fills in Doppler velocity data voids smoothly by minimizing Doppler velocity gradients while not modifying good data. This method provides estimates of the analysed variable in data voids without creating extrema.Actual single-Doppler radar data of four tornadoes are used to demonstrate the variational algorithm. In two cases, data are missing in the original data, and in the other two, data are voided artificially. The filled-in data match the voided data well in smoothly varying Doppler velocity fields. Near singularities such as tornadic vortex signatures, the match is poor as anticipated. The algorithm does not create any velocity peaks in the former data voids, thus preventing false triggering of tornado warnings. Doppler circulation is used herein as a far-field tornado detection and advance-warning parameter. In almost all cases, the measured circulation is quite insensitive to the data that have been voided and then filled. The tornado threat is still apparent.

An improved Doppler radar radial velocity assimilation observation operator is proposed based on the integrating velocity–azimuth process (IVAP) method. This improved operator can ingest both radial wind and its spatial distribution characteristics to deduce the two components of the mean wind within a given area. With this operator, the system can be used to assimilate information from tangential wind and radial wind. On the other hand, because the improved observation operator is defined within a given area, which can be uniformly chosen in both the observation and analysis coordinate systems, it has a thinning function. The traditional observation operator and the improved observation operator, along with their corresponding data processing modules, were implemented in the community Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation analysis system (GSI) to demonstrate the superiority of the improved operator. The results of single analysis unit experiments revealed that the two operators are comparable when the analysis unit is small. When the analysis unit becomes larger, the analysis results of the improved operator are better than those of the traditional operator because the former can ingest more wind information than the latter. The results of a typhoon case study indicated that both operators effectively ingested radial wind information and produced more reasonable typhoon structures than those in the background fields. The tangential velocity relative to the radar was retrieved by the improved operator through ingesting tangential wind information from the spatial distribution characteristics of radial wind. Because of the improved vortex intensity and structure, obvious improvements were seen in both track and intensity predictions when the improved operator was used.

Abstract. Satellite radar remote-sensing of rain is important for quantifying of the global hydrological cycle, atmospheric energy budget, and many microphysical cloud and precipitation processes; however, radar estimates of rain rate are sensitive to assumptions about the raindrop size distribution. The upcoming EarthCARE satellite will feature a 94-GHz Doppler radar alongside lidar and radiometer instruments, presenting opportunities for enhanced global retrievals of the rain drop size distribution. In this paper we demonstrate the capability to retrieve both rain rate and a parameter of the rain drop size distribution from an airborne 94-GHz Doppler radar using CAPTIVATE, the variational retrieval algorithm developed for EarthCARE radar–lidar synergy. For a range of rain regimes observed during the Tropical Composition, Cloud and Climate Coupling (TC4) field campaign in the eastern Pacific in 2007, we explore the contributions of Doppler velocity and path-integrated attenuation (PIA) to the retrievals, and evaluate the retrievals against independent measurements from a second, less attenuated, Doppler radar aboard the same aircraft. Retrieved drop number concentration varied over five orders of magnitude between light rain from melting ice, and warm rain from liquid clouds. Doppler velocity can be used to estimate rain rate over land, and retrievals of rain rate and drop number concentration are possible in profiles of light rain over land; in moderate warm rain, drop number concentration can be retrieved without Doppler velocity. These results suggest that EarthCARE rain retrievals facilitated by Doppler radar will make substantial improvements to the global understanding of the interaction of clouds and precipitation.

AbstractThe characteristics of the intense vorticity structures (IVSs) near the turbulent/non-turbulent (T/NT) interface separating the turbulent and the irrotational flow regions are analysed using a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a turbulent plane jet. The T/NT interface is defined by the radius of the large vorticity structures (LVSs) bordering the jet edge, while the IVSs arise only at a depth of about $5\eta $ from the T/NT interface, where $\eta $ is the Kolmogorov micro-scale. Deep inside the jet shear layer the characteristics of the IVSs are similar to the IVSs found in many other flows: the mean radius, tangential velocity and circulation Reynolds number are $R/ \eta \approx 4. 6$, ${u}_{0} / {u}^{\ensuremath{\prime} } \approx 0. 8$, and ${\mathit{Re}}_{\Gamma } / { \mathit{Re}}_{\lambda }^{1/ 2} \approx 28$, where ${u}_{0} $, and ${\mathit{Re}}_{\lambda } $ are the root mean square of the velocity fluctuations and the Reynolds number based on the Taylor micro-scale, respectively. Moreover, as in forced isotropic turbulence the IVSs inside the jet are well described by the Burgers vortex model, where the vortex core radius is stable due to a balance between the competing effects of axial vorticity production and viscous diffusion. Statistics conditioned on the distance from the T/NT interface are used to analyse the effect of the T/NT interface on the geometry and dynamics of the IVSs and show that the mean radius $R$, tangential velocity ${u}_{0} $ and circulation $\Gamma $ of the IVSs increase as the T/NT interface is approached, while the vorticity norm $\vert \omega \vert $ stays approximately constant. Specifically $R$, ${u}_{0} $ and $\Gamma $ exhibit maxima at a distance of roughly one Taylor micro-scale from the T/NT interface, before decreasing as the T/NT is approached. Analysis of the dynamics of the IVS shows that this is caused by a sharp decrease in the axial stretching rate acting on the axis of the IVSs near the jet edge. Unlike the IVSs deep inside the shear layer, there is a small predominance of vortex diffusion over stretching for the IVSs near the T/NT interface implying that the core of these structures is not stable i.e. it will tend to grow in time. Nevertheless the Burgers vortex model can still be considered to be a good representation for the IVSs near the jet edge, although it is not as accurate as for the IVSs deep inside the jet shear layer, since the observed magnitude of this imbalance is relatively small.
