Coupling of Wind and Potential Temperature in an Ekman Model in the Stratified Atmospheric Boundary Layer

Abstract A linear Ekman model in the stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is proposed based on the steady state version of the linearized three-dimensional primitive equations with the inclusion of the vertical diffusivity. Due to the inclusion of the potential temperature equation and hydrostatic equation, pressure and potential temperature couple with wind in the proposed model, and thus are not arbitrarily specified variables as in previous studies on the baroclinicity in the Ekman model. The extended thermal wind balance equation and the Ekman potential vorticity equation are derived to describe the coupling. The two equations, along with the equation describing the constraint on potential temperature, are employed to derive the analytical solutions of the proposed Ekman model. Because potential temperature is not a specified variable but part of the solution, the derived analytical solutions have very different forms from those derived in previous studies. The differences illustrate the impact of the inclusion of the potential temperature equation and hydrostatic equation on wind, pressure and potential temperature in the proposed Ekman model. It is found that the computed wind profiles based on the proposed model can capture some important features of the observed wind profiles.

Abstract A new technique for retrieving near-surface moisture and profiles of mixing ratio and potential temperature through the depth of the marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) using airborne lidar and multichannel infrared radiometer data is presented. Data gathered during an extended field campaign over the Atlantic Ocean in support of the Lidar In-space Technology Experiment are used to generate 16 moisture and temperature retrievals that are then compared with dropsonde measurements. The technique utilizes lidar-derived statistics on the height of cumulus clouds that frequently cap the MABL to estimate the lifting condensation level. Combining this information with radiometer-derived sea surface temperature measurements, an estimate of the near-surface moisture can be obtained to an accuracy of about 0.8 g kg−1. Lidar-derived statistics on convective plume height and coverage within the MABL are then used to infer the profiles of potential temperature and moisture with a vertical resolution of 20 m. The rms accuracy of derived MABL average moisture and potential temperature is better than 1 g kg−1 and 1°C, respectively. The method relies on the presence of a cumulus-capped MABL, and it was found that the conditions necessary for use of the technique occurred roughly 75% of the time. The synergy of simple aerosol backscatter lidar and infrared radiometer data also shows promise for the retrieval of MABL moisture and temperature from space.

<p>In recent years, the use of radar wind profilers (RWP) at airports has grown significantly with the aim of supporting decision makers to maintain the safety of aircraft landings and takeoffs.</p><p>The RWP provide vertical profiles of averaged horizontal wind speed and direction and vertical wind velocity for the entire Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) and beyond. In addition, RWP with Radio-Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) are able to retrieve virtual temperature profiles in the ABL.</p><p>RWP data evaluation is usually based on the so-called Doppler Beam Swinging method (DBS) which assumes homogeneity and stationarity of the wind field. Often, transient eddies violate this homogeneity and stationarity requirement. Hence, incorrect wind profiles can relate to transient eddies and present a problem for the forecast of high-impact weather phenomena in airports. This work intends to provide a method for removing outliers in such profiles based on historical data and other variables related to the Atmospheric Boundary Layer stability profile in the study region.</p><p>For this study, a dataset of almost one year retrieved from a RWP LAP3000 with RASS Extension is used for a wind profile correction algorithm development.</p><p>The algorithm consists of the detection of outliers in the wind profiles based on the thermodynamic structure of the ABL and the generation of the corrected profiles.</p><p>Results show that the algorithm is capable of identifying and correcting unrealistic variations in speed caused by transient eddies. The method can be applied as a complement to the RWP data processing for better data reliability.</p><p> </p><p>Keywords: atmospheric boundary layer; stability profile; wind profile</p>

The Loess Plateau is one land-atmosphere coupling hotspot. Soil moisture has an influence on atmospheric boundary layer development under specific early-morning atmospheric thermodynamic structures. This paper investigates the sensitivity of atmospheric convection to soil moisture conditions over the Loess Plateau in China by using the convective triggering potential (CTP)—humidity index (HIlow) framework. The CTP indicates atmospheric stability and the HIlow indicates atmospheric humidity in the low-level atmosphere. By comparing the model outcomes with the observations, the one-dimensional model achieves realistic daily behavior of the radiation and surface heat fluxes and the mixed layer properties with appropriate modifications. New CTP-HIlow thresholds for soil moisture-atmosphere feedbacks are found in the Loess Plateau area. By applying the new thresholds with long-time scales sounding data, we conclude that negative feedback is dominant in the north and west portion of the Loess Plateau; positive feedback is predominant in the south and east portion. In general, this framework has predictive significance for the impact of soil moisture on precipitation. By using this new CTP-HIlow framework, we can determine under what atmospheric conditions soil moisture can affect the triggering of precipitation and under what atmospheric conditions soil moisture has no influence on the triggering of precipitation.

<p>Tradewind clouds can exhibit a wide diversity of mesoscale organizations, and the turbulence of marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) can exhibit coherent structures and mesoscale circulations. One of the objectives of the EUREC4A (Elucidating the role of cloud-circulation coupling in climate) field experiment was to better understand the tight interplay between the mesoscale organization of clouds, boundary-layer processes, and the large-scale environment.</p><p>During the experiment, that took place East of Barbados over the Western Tropical Atlantic Ocean in Jan-Feb 2020, the French ATR-42 research aircraft was devoted to the characterization of the cloud amount and of the subcoud layer structure. <span>During its 17 research flights, </span><span>it</span> <span>sampled a </span><span>large diversity of large scale conditions and </span><span>cloud patterns</span><span>. </span>Multiple sensors onboard t<span>he aircraft measure</span><span>d</span> <span>high-frequency </span><span>fluctuations of potential temperature, water vapour mixing ratio and wind , allowing </span><span>for </span><span>an extensive characterization </span><span> of</span><span> the turbulence </span><span>within</span><span> the subcloud layer. </span> <span>A </span><span>quality-controled and calibrated turbulence data</span><span>set</span><span> was produced </span><span>on the basis of these measurements</span><span>, which is now </span><span> available on the EUREC4A AERIS data portal.</span></p><p><span>The </span><span>MABL </span><span>turbulent </span><span>structure i</span><span>s</span><span> studied </span><span>using this dataset, </span><span>through a spectral analysis </span><span>of the vertical velocity</span><span>. Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) fill a gap in high-resolution observations of meteorological parameters on small scales in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Especially in the remote polar areas, there is a strong need for such detailed observations with different research foci. In this study, three systems are presented which have been adapted to the particular needs for operating in harsh polar environments: The fixed-wing aircraft M 2 AV with a mass of 6 kg, the quadrocopter ALICE with a mass of 19 kg, and the fixed-wing aircraft ALADINA with a mass of almost 25 kg. For all three systems, their particular modifications for polar operations are documented, in particular the insulation and heating requirements for low temperatures. Each system has completed meteorological observations under challenging conditions, including take-off and landing on the ice surface, low temperatures (down to −28 ∘ C), icing, and, for the quadrocopter, under the impact of the rotor downwash. The influence on the measured parameters is addressed here in the form of numerical simulations and spectral data analysis. Furthermore, results from several case studies are discussed: With the M 2 AV, low-level flights above leads in Antarctic sea ice were performed to study the impact of areas of open water within ice surfaces on the ABL, and a comparison with simulations was performed. ALICE was used to study the small-scale structure and short-term variability of the ABL during a cruise of RV Polarstern to the 79 ∘ N glacier in Greenland. With ALADINA, aerosol measurements of different size classes were performed in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, in highly complex terrain. In particular, very small, freshly formed particles are difficult to monitor and require the active control of temperature inside the instruments. The main aim of the article is to demonstrate the potential of UAS for ABL studies in polar environments, and to provide practical advice for future research activities with similar systems.

Abstract A solution to the 3D transport equation for passive tracers in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), formulated in terms of Green’s function (GF), is derived to show the connection between the concentration and surface fluxes of passive tracers through GF. Analytical solutions to the 1D vertical diffusion equation are derived to reveal the nonlinear dependence of the concentration and flux on the diffusivity, time, and height, and are employed to examine the impact of the diffusivity on the diurnal variations of CO2 in the ABL. The properties of transport operator H and their implications in inverse modeling are discussed. It is found that H has a significant contribution to the rectifier effect in the diurnal variations of CO2. Since H is the integral of GF in time, the narrow distribution of GF in time justifies the reduction of the size of H in inverse modeling. The exponential decay of GF with height suggests that the estimated surface fluxes in inverse modeling are more sensitive to the observations in the lower ABL. The solutions and first mean value theorem are employed to discuss the uncertainties associated with the concentration–mean surface flux equation used to link the concentrations and mean surface flux. Both analytical and numerical results show that the equation can introduce big errors, particularly when surface flux is sign indefinite. Numerical results show that the conclusions about the evolution properties of passive tracers based on the analytical solutions also hold in the cases with a more complicated diffusion coefficient and time-varying ABL height.

Abstract. We studied the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) dynamics and the impact on atmospheric chemistry during the HUMPPA-COPEC-2010 campaign. We used vertical profiles of potential temperature and specific moisture, obtained from 132 radio soundings, to determine the main boundary layer characteristics during the campaign. We propose a classification according to several main ABL prototypes. Further, we performed a case study of a single day, focusing on the convective boundary layer, to analyse the influence of the dynamics on the chemical evolution of the ABL. We used a mixed layer model, initialized and constrained by observations. In particular, we investigated the role of large scale atmospheric dynamics (subsidence and advection) on the ABL development and the evolution of chemical species concentrations. We find that, if the large scale forcings are taken into account, the ABL dynamics are represented satisfactorily. Subsequently, we studied the impact of mixing with a residual layer aloft during the morning transition on atmospheric chemistry. The time evolution of NOx and O3 concentrations, including morning peaks, can be explained and accurately simulated by incorporating the transition of the ABL dynamics from night to day. We demonstrate the importance of the ABL height evolution for the representation of atmospheric chemistry. Our findings underscore the need to couple the dynamics and chemistry at different spatial scales (from turbulence to mesoscale) in chemistry-transport models and in the interpretation of observational data.
