scholarly journals Moist Static Potential Vorticity Budget in Tropical Motion Systems

Abstract Analyses of simple models of moist tropical motion systems reveal that the column-mean moist static potential vorticity (MSPV) can explain their propagation and growth. The MSPV is akin to the equivalent PV except it uses moist static energy (MSE) instead of the equivalent potential temperature. Examination of an MSPV budget that is scaled for moist off-equatorial synoptic-scale systems reveals that α, the ratio between the vertical gradients of latent and dry static energies, describes the relative contribution of dry and moist advective processes to the evolution of MSPV. Horizontal advection of the moist component of MSPV, a process akin to horizontal MSE advection, governs the evolution of synoptic-scale systems in regions of high humidity. On the other hand, horizontal advection of dry PV predominates in a dry atmosphere. Derivation of a “moist static” wave activity density budget reveals that α also describes the relative importance of moist and dry processes to wave activity amplification and decay. Linear regression analysis of the MSPV budget in eastern Pacific easterly waves shows that the MSPV anomalies originate over the eastern Caribbean and propagate westward due to dry PV advection. They are amplified by the fluxes of the moist component of MSPV over the Caribbean sea and over the eastern Pacific from 105-130°W, underscoring the importance of moist processes in these waves. On the other hand, dry PV convergence amplifies the waves from 90-100°W, likely as a result of the barotropic energy conversions that occur in this region.

This study aims to determine the production cost home industry of sambel pecel, to determine sambel pecel production in Madiun, and to know is there any effect on the cost of production yield at home industry of sambel pecel Madiun. The samples in this study using a sample that is saturated all home industries of sambel pecel in the city of Madiun, amounting to 34 Home industry of pecel. Data collection using interviews and documentation. In analyzing the data used linear regression analysis to test the hypothesis put forward in this study. The results showed that the cost of production has an influence as well as a positive relationship to yield at Home industry of sambel pecel in the city of Madiun. It is derived from the value rhit rtab 0.339 0.982 whereas on the other hand Sighit value of 0.00 and Sigpro ≤ 0.05. This means that rhit ≥ rtab (0.982 ≥ 0.339) or Sighit ≤Sigpro (0.00 ≤ 0.05), which suggested a rejection of H0 means that production costs have a relationship with industrial production at home industry of sambel pecel at Madiun city. It also obtained the Fhit, while the value of 875.064 Ftab 4,149 value on the other hand is known Sighit 0.00 and Sigpro 0.05. This means that the Fhit ≥ Ftab (4.149≥875.064) ≤ Sighit≤ Sigpro (0,00 ≤ 0,05). Meaning a rejection of H0 which indicates that there is a cost impact of production on industrial production at home industry of sambel pecel at Madiun city. Also obtained regression coefficients (t test) with thit 29.581 ttab 1.693 on the other hand Sighit 0.00 and Sigpro 0.05. This means that the thit ≥ ttab(29.581 ≥ 1.693) or Sighit ≤ Sigpro (0,00 ≤ 0,05). Results R2 of 96.5%. Showed that 96.5% of the variable cost of production is affected production, while the remaining 3.5% is influenced by other factors.

We investigate the merger of two co-rotating geophysical vortices at finite Rossby and Froude number. The initial conditions consist of two uniform potential vorticity vortices in near-equilibrium and in a nearly ‘balanced’ state (i.e. with negligible emission of inertia–gravity wave radiation). We determine the critical merger distance between the two vortices. This distance is found to increase with the magnitude of the Rossby number: intense cyclones or intense anticyclones are able to merge from further apart compared to weaker cyclones and anticyclones. Note that the Froude number is proportional to the Rossby number for the near-equilibrium initial conditions considered. The critical merging distance also depends on the sign of the potential vorticity anomaly, which is positive for ‘cyclones’ and negative for ‘anticyclones’. We show that ageostrophic motions occurring at finite Rossby number tend to draw cyclones together but draw anticyclones apart. On the other hand, we show that anticyclones tend to deform more, in particular when subject to vertical shear (as when the vortices are vertically offset). These two effects compete. Overall, nearly aligned cyclones tend to merge from further apart than their anticyclonic counterparts, while vertically offset anticyclones merge from further apart than cyclones.

The aim of this research is to test the influence of GCG and CSR on the firm’s value with profitability (ROA) as the moderating variable. This research uses Double Linear Regression Analysis. Causal research method was employed. 45 companies of manufactures in basic and chemical sector were used as the sample for the year 2012 and 2013. GCG as independent variable was represented with independent commissioner and audit committee. CSR variable was analyzed using GRI 4th version in the year 2015. Tobin’s Q model was used to analyze the firm’s value. This research reveals that the GCG, CSR and ROA simultaneously affects the firm’s value. Meanwhile, the CSR variable affects the firm’s value, GCG variable has negative effect on the firm’s value. The ROA does not affect the firm’s value, ROA which interact with CSR resulting negative effect toward the firm’s value. This means that ROA as moderating variable weakens the relation of CSR on the firm’s value. On the other hand, ROA strengthens the relation of GCG on the firm’s value.

Abstract Background Disability pensioners' economic well-being is weaker than that of the same-age population on average. Approximately 80 per cent of the partial disability pensioners continue working alongside a pension. The same figure for full disability pensioners is 10 per cent. The aim of this study was to examine how working alongside a pension and how the cause of disability are associated with partial and full disability pensioners' economic well-being. Methods The data consisted of longitudinal register-based (100% sample of Finns) data from Statistics Finland and the Finnish Centre for Pensions. The data included 18,291 partial disability pensioners and 116,376 full disability pensioners aged 30-62 who were on a disability pension in 2017 and had received a disability pension for at least two years. Economic well-being was measured via disposable income. Linear regression analysis was used to analyze the economic well-being of disability pensioners. Results In 2017, the disposable income of disability pensioners who were working alongside a pension was, on average, 50 per cent higher than that of non-working disability pensioners. The median income from work was approximately 16,700 euros/year for working partial disability pensioners and 11,100 euros/year for working full disability pensioners. Adjusted regression models showed that working alongside a pension was associated with a higher economic well-being. Disability pensioners with a mental diagnosis, on the other hand, were working less often and had a lower economic well-being than others. Conclusions Working alongside a disability pension has a positive effect on the economic well-being of disability pensioners. Mental diagnosis, on the other hand, often leads to a lower income. Key messages Disability pensioners who work alongside a pension have a higher economic well-being than their non-working counterparts. Mental diagnosis was associated with working less often alongside a disability pension and a weaker economic well-being of disability pensioners.

AbstractWe have developed a model for theH2OandOHevolution in a comet outburst, assuming that together with the gas, a distribution of icy grains is ejected. With an initial mass of icy grains of 108kg released, theH2OandOHproductions are increased up to a factor two, and the growth curves change drastically in the first two days. The model is applied to eruptions detected in theOHradio monitorings and fits well with the slow variations in the flux. On the other hand, several events of short duration appear, consisting of a sudden rise ofOHflux, followed by a sudden decay on the second day. These apparent short bursts are frequently found as precursors of a more durable eruption. We suggest that both of them are part of a unique eruption, and that the sudden decay is due to collisions that de-excite theOHmaser, when it reaches the Cometopause region located at 1.35 × 105kmfrom the nucleus.

We have become accustomed to differentiating between the scanning microscope and the conventional transmission microscope according to the resolving power which the two instruments offer. The conventional microscope is capable of a point resolution of a few angstroms and line resolutions of periodic objects of about 1Å. On the other hand, the scanning microscope, in its normal form, is not ordinarily capable of a point resolution better than 100Å. Upon examining reasons for the 100Å limitation, it becomes clear that this is based more on tradition than reason, and in particular, it is a condition imposed upon the microscope by adherence to thermal sources of electrons.

Life beyond 1MeV – like life after 40 – is not too different unless one takes advantage of past experience and is receptive to new opportunities. At first glance, the returns on performing electron microscopy at voltages greater than 1MeV diminish rather rapidly as the curves which describe the well-known advantages of HVEM often tend towards saturation. However, in a country with a significant HVEM capability, a good case can be made for investing in instruments with a range of maximum accelerating voltages. In this regard, the 1.5MeV KRATOS HVEM being installed in Berkeley will complement the other 650KeV, 1MeV, and 1.2MeV instruments currently operating in the U.S. One other consideration suggests that 1.5MeV is an optimum voltage machine – Its additional advantages may be purchased for not much more than a 1MeV instrument. On the other hand, the 3MeV HVEM's which seem to be operated at 2MeV maximum, are much more expensive.

Summary: My comment is basically restricted to the situation in which less-able students find themselves and refers only to literature in German. From this point of view I am basically able to confirm Marsh's results. It must, however, be said that with less-able pupils the opposite effect can be found: Levels of self-esteem in these pupils are raised, at least temporarily, by separate instruction, academic performance however drops; combined instruction, on the other hand, leads to improved academic performance, while levels of self-esteem drop. Apparently, the positive self-image of less-able pupils who receive separate instruction does not bring about the potential enhancement of academic performance one might expect from high-ability pupils receiving separate instruction. To resolve the dilemma, it is proposed that individual progress in learning be accentuated, and that comparisons with others be dispensed with. This fosters a self-image that can in equal measure be realistic and optimistic.

Abstract. Two experiments examined the influence of stories on recipients’ self-perceptions. Extending prior theory and research, our focus was on assimilation effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in line with a protagonist’s traits) as well as on contrast effects (i.e., changes in self-perception in contrast to a protagonist’s traits). In Experiment 1 ( N = 113), implicit and explicit conscientiousness were assessed after participants read a story about either a diligent or a negligent student. Moderation analyses showed that highly transported participants and participants with lower counterarguing scores assimilate the depicted traits of a story protagonist, as indicated by explicit, self-reported conscientiousness ratings. Participants, who were more critical toward a story (i.e., higher counterarguing) and with a lower degree of transportation, showed contrast effects. In Experiment 2 ( N = 103), we manipulated transportation and counterarguing, but we could not identify an effect on participants’ self-ascribed level of conscientiousness. A mini meta-analysis across both experiments revealed significant positive overall associations between transportation and counterarguing on the one hand and story-consistent self-reported conscientiousness on the other hand.
