The Opioid Epidemic Was Not Caused by Economic Distress but by Factors That Could Be More Rapidly Addressed

Without the opioid epidemic, American life expectancy would not have declined prior to 2020. The epidemic was sparked by the development and marketing of a new generation of prescription opioids, and the behavior of opioid providers is still helping to drive it. Little relationship exists between the opioid crisis and contemporaneous measures of labor market opportunity: cohorts and areas that experienced poor labor market conditions do show lagged increases in opioid mortality, but the effect is modest relative to the scale of the epidemic. We argue that specific policies and features of the U.S. health care market, especially liberal prescribing of opioids, led to the current crisis. It will not be possible to quickly reverse depressed economic conditions, but it is possible to implement policies that would reduce the number of new opioid addicts and save the lives of many who are already addicted.

The article describes the main issues of state regulation of youth employment. The authors updated the problems of labor socialization of young people in the Russian socio-economic conditions. The article focuses on the legal regulation of this sphere both at the national and regional levels. Reasonable measures aimed at increasing competitiveness and professionalization of the young generation in the labor market conditions are substantiated.

The present research aims to establish the impact that the current crisis situation the planet is facing, namely the COVID-19 pandemic, has had so far on the Romanian labor force market. In this context, given the lack of information and information regarding this pandemic and its effects, the administration of a questionnaire among the population was considered to identify the research results. The method of semantic differential and the method of ordering the ranks were used for the interpretation of the results. With the help of this questionnaire, it will be possible to answer the question of the research in this study: What are the main effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Romanian labor market? The main results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the Romanian workforce; the respondents of the applied questionnaire claimed that they obtained better results and maintained a similar income, but the health crisis also influenced the mentality of employees, with respondents stating that in the event of changing jobs, they would consider it very important for the new employer to ensure the conditions for preventing and combating COVID-19, as well as complex health insurance. However, analyzing at the macroeconomic level, it was found that the COVID-19 pandemic induced an increase in the number of unemployed people in the Romanian labor market.

The labor market of the Dutch health sector as patient: diagnosis and some advices for treatment The labor market of the Dutch health sector as patient: diagnosis and some advices for treatment In this article we discuss the labor market and job structure of the health care in the Netherlands. The health care market is under cost and capacity pressure which calls for a fundamental change of the job and training system. A meta-analysis based on two leading trend reports shows that there is a watershed between the labor market for physicians and non-physicians. The labor market for doctors is centrally planned, while for the much larger group of nurses the labor market is not governed. Another observation is that bottlenecks are mainly approached by increasing the capacity, less by innovations in the educational and occupational structure. Following this analysis, this article advocates for a comprehensive labor market policy that takes into account different segments of care, that require different skills mixes and competence bundles. We also argue that segmentation on the regional level is required to achieve a demand-based health labor market policy.

Unlucky young workers entering the labor market in recessions suffer a range of medium-to long-term consequences. This paper summarizes the findings of the growing empirical literature on this subject and uses it to assess economic models of career development. The literature finds large initial effects on earnings, labor supply, and wages that tend to fade after ten to fifteen years in the labor market, and that are accompanied by changes in occupation, job mobility, and employer characteristics. Adverse initial labor market entry also has persistent effects on a range of social outcomes, including timing and completed fertility, marriage and divorce, criminal activities, attitudes, and risky alcohol consumption. There is also evidence that early exposure to depressed labor market lowers health and raises mortality in middle age, patterns accompanied by a reopening of earnings gaps.
