An Investigation of Automobile Handling as Implemented by a Variable-Steering Automobile

Steering tasks consisting of steady turns and fast passing maneuvers were performed by five drivers using an automobile with a variable-steering system. The experiment employed subjective evaluation methods to investigate the influence of (1) steering-force gradient and (2) artificial steering-system torques (with the force gradient held fixed) on driver opinion of vehicle handling in the selected maneuvers. The experimental data indicate that both the steering-force gradient and the damping of the steering system through its influence on the free control oscillatory mode of motion of the over-all vehicle have a first order effect on driver evaluation of the handling qualities of an automobile. A steering-force gradient of 17 ft-lb/g of lateral acceleration was found to be near optimum for the specific conditions investigated.

A control theoretic model of driver steering control behavior is presented. The resulting model is shown capable of producing driver/vehicle steering responses which compare favorably with those obtained from driver simulation. The model is simple enough to be used by engineers who may not be manual control specialists. The model contains both preview and compensatory steering dynamics. An analytical technique for vehicle handling qualities assessment is briefly discussed. Driver/vehicle responses from two driving tasks evaluated in a driver simulator are used to evaluate the overall validity of the driver/vehicle model. Finally, the model is exercised in predictive fashion in the computer simulation of a lane keeping task on a curving roadway where the simulated vehicle possessed one of three different steering systems: a conventional two-wheel steering system and a pair of four-wheel steering systems.

This paper uses AMESim software to establish simulation model of SGA170 mine truck full hydraulic steering system, and validates the correctness of the proposed model. Through the joint simulation, vehicle steady circular test, double lane change test and steering wheel angle input test are verified. By changing the initial alignment parameters of front axle, vehicle handling performance are tested through the same simulation test, and yaw velocity, and the curves of lateral acceleration and vehicle roll angle describing vehicle handling stability are obtained, which provides a reference for the design and improvement of the similar mine truck selection.

This paper reports on the study of microporous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foams as a highly deformable dielectric material used in the composition of flexible capacitive pressure sensors dedicated to wearable use. A fabrication process allowing the porosity of the foams to be adjusted was proposed and the fabricated foams were characterized. Then, elementary capacitive pressure sensors (15 × 15 mm2 square shaped electrodes) were elaborated with fabricated foams (5 mm or 10 mm thick) and were electromechanically characterized. Since the sensor responses under load are strongly non-linear, a behavioral non-linear model (first order exponential) was proposed, adjusted to the experimental data, and used to objectively estimate the sensor performances in terms of sensitivity and measurement range. The main conclusions of this study are that the porosity of the PDMS foams can be adjusted through the sugar:PDMS volume ratio and the size of sugar crystals used to fabricate the foams. Additionally, the porosity of the foams significantly modified the sensor performances. Indeed, compared to bulk PDMS sensors of the same size, the sensitivity of porous PDMS sensors could be multiplied by a factor up to 100 (the sensitivity is 0.14 %.kPa−1 for a bulk PDMS sensor and up to 13.7 %.kPa−1 for a porous PDMS sensor of the same dimensions), while the measurement range was reduced from a factor of 2 to 3 (from 594 kPa for a bulk PDMS sensor down to between 255 and 177 kPa for a PDMS foam sensor of the same dimensions, according to the porosity). This study opens the way to the design and fabrication of wearable flexible pressure sensors with adjustable performances through the control of the porosity of the fabricated PDMS foams.

First- and second-order linear models of mean movement time for serial arm movements aimed at a target and subject to preview constraints and lateral constraints were formulated as extensions of the so-called Fitts's law of motor control. These models were validated on the basis of experimental data from five subjects and found to explain from 80% to 85% of the variation in movement time in the case of the first-order models and from 93% to 95% of such variation for the second-order models. Fitts's index of difficulty (ID) was generally found to contribute more to the movement time than did either the preview ID or the lateral ID defined. Of the different types of errors, target overshoots occurred far more frequently than undershoots.

AbstractThe standard percolation equations or power laws, for dc and ac conductivity (dielectric constant) are based on scaling ansatz, and predict the behaviour of the first and second order terms, above and below the percolation or critical volume fraction (øc), and in the crossoverregion. Recent experimental results on ac conductivity are presented, which show that these equations, with the exception of real σm above øc and the first order terms in the crossover region, are only valid in the limit σi/σc = 0, where for an ideal dielectric σi=ωε0εr.A single analytical equation, which has the same parameters as the standard percolation equations, and which, for ac conductivity, reduces to the standard percolation power laws in the limit σi(ωε0εr)/σc = 0 for all but one case, is presented. The exception is the expression for real σm below øc, where the standard power law is always incorrect. The equation is then shown to quantitatively fit both first and second order dc and ac experimental data over the entire frequency and composition range. This phenomenological equation is also continuous, has the scaling properties required at a second order metal-insulator and fits scaled first order dc and ac experimental data. Unfortunately, the s and t exponents that are necessary to fit the data to the above analytical equation are usually not the simple dimensionally determined universal ones and depend on a number of factors.

An improved calculation of the supersonic panel flutter characteristics of a thin cylindrical shell of finite length is presented. The aerodynamic load is determined with account taken of first-order terms in vibration frequency, and when this is introduced into the elastic shell equation an integro differential equation results. An equivalent eigenvalue problem is set up by applying Galerkin’s method to this equation. The flutter boundary, for given Mach number and circumferential mode n, corresponds to the shell thickness ratio at which the real part of any one of the eigenvalues first becomes non-negative. It is found that the most severe flutter condition, for given Mach number, occurs for a circumferential mode n = 7. The present calculations exclude second-order frequency terms in the elastic part of the flutter equation, even though they may have a first-order effect. A subsequent calculation referred to here shows that these terms indeed have no significant influence on the first-order analysis.

It is very important to simulate driver's manipulation for people - car - road closed loop simulation system. In this paper, the driver model is divided into two parts, linear vehicle model is used to simulate the driver's driving experience, and closed-loop feedback is used to characterize the driver's emergency feedback. The lateral acceleration of vehicle is used as feedback in closed loop control. Simulation results show that the smaller lateral acceleration requires the less closed-loop feedback control. The driver model can accurately track the target path, which can be used to simulate the manipulation of the driver. The driver model can be used for people - car - road closed loop simulation to evaluate vehicle handling stability.

Abstract Our recently tailored and fully characterized poly (AN)-starch nanoparticle graft copolymer having 60.1 G.Y. % was used as a starting substrate for copper ions removal from waste water effluent after chemical modification with hydroxyl amine via oximation reaction. This was done to change the abundant nitrile groups in the above copolymer into amidoxime one and the resultant poly (amidoxime) resin was used as adsorbent for copper ions. The resin was characterized qualitatively via rapid vanadium ion test and instrumentally by FT-IR spectra and SEM morphological analysis to confirm the presence of amidoxime groups. The adsorption capacity of the resin was done using the batch technique, whereas the residual copper ions content in the filtrate before and after adsorption was measured using atomic adsorption spectrometry. It was found that the maximum adsorption capacity of poly (amidoxime) resin was 115.2 mg/g at pH 7, 400ppm copper ions concentration and 0.25 g adsorbent at room temperature. The adsorption, kinetics and isothermal study of the process is scrutinized using different variables, such as pH, contact time, copper ion concentration and adsorbent dosage. Different kinetics models comprising the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order have been applied to the experimental data to envisage the adsorption kinetics. It was found from kinetic study that pseudo-second-order rate equation was better than pseudo-first-order supporting the formation of chemisorption process. While, in case of isothermal study, the examination of calculated correlation coefficient (R2) values showed that the Langmuir model provide the best fit to experimental data than Freundlich one.

The surface tension is calculated as the excess of the free energy per unit area, due to the presence of a surface layer, using Landau–de Gennes expansions, in the hypothesis of a first order transition in the bulk and taking into account the dependence of the surface free energy from the surface tilt angle. The surface order parameter is calculated and surface-ordered phase above the phase transition temperature has been found. A variety of calculated surface tension versus temperature curves with a jump at the phase transition, with positive or negative slope, well describing the experimental data from literature, have been attained.
