The purpose of this study was to test a hypothesized model that proposes a causal relationship between motivation and academic achievement on the acquisition of jazz theory knowledge. A reliability analysis of the latent variables ranged from .92 to .94. Confirmatory factor analyses of the motivation (standardized root mean square residual [SRMR] = .067) and jazz theory (SRMR = .063) measures indicated a good fit of the predicted model to the observed data. Results of the latent path model indicated good fit (χ2 = 20.08, p = .692, df = 24, N = 102) and large, positive, and statistically significant direct effects of motivation (β = 0.65) and academic achievement (β = 0.56) on jazz theory knowledge acquisition. The successful identification of this proposed model lends enough support for continued investigation into the process surrounding the acquisition of jazz theory knowledge.

Abstract. Measurement invaraiance is a key concept in psychological assessment and a fundamental prerequisite for meaningful comparisons across groups. In the prevalent approach, multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA), specific measurement parameters are constrained to equality across groups. The degrees of freedom ( df) for these models readily follow from the hypothesized measurement model and the invariance constraints. In light of research questioning the soundness of statistical reporting in psychology, we examined how often reported df match with the df recalcualted based on information given in the publications. More specifically, we reviewed 128 studies from six leading peer-reviewed journals focusing on psychological assessment and recalculated the df for 302 measurement invariance testing procedures. Overall, about a quarter of all articles included at least one discrepancy with metric and scalar invariance being more frequently affected. We discuss moderators of these discrepancies and identify typical pitfalls in measurement invariance testing. Moreover, we provide example syntax for different methods of scaling latent variables and introduce a tool that allows for the recalculation of df in common MGCFA models to improve the statistical soundness of invariance testing in psychological research.

Today the retention millennial workers is a challenge for organizations. The purpose of this paper is to propose ideas to the decision makers, to lessen the high rate of personnel turnover in all kinds of industries in many countries. This research validates an instrument that evaluates the employability factors of millennials in Mexico, according to their own expectations. We based our study on the previous literature about the millennial generation in many countries. To validate the questionnaire, a sampling of 781 workers from the states of Querétaro and Guanajuato in México was conducted. The method used to achieve the objective was through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling, and tested two different methods: first order and second order models. With the three methods, exploratory, first order and second order factor analyses, similar results were obtained. In the analysis of the statistical techniques, two latent variables associated with the expectations of this generational group were generated. The factors found are “personal satisfaction with the organization” and “satisfaction with the organization’s social commitment.” These two factors are supported by the literature of other researchers. It is suggested that this questionnaire be validated in other countries but also in other regions of Mexico, using different productive sectors, thereby obtaining a broader perspective that will allow us to understand not only what millennials want from their work, but to what extent they want it.

Summary This work analyzes the relationship between the different CDI factors, nonsocialized personality traits as measured by the Psychoticism and Antisocial Behavior EPQ scales, academic achievement, and general intelligence. Participants in this study were 678 8th-grade Basic General Education students (secondary), of whom 315 were boys and 363 girls, with an average mean age of 13 years. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of the CDI performed yielded four orthogonal factors. The third factor (CDI-III; Incompetence/Maladjustment) was integrated by items related to social and academic maladjusted behavior. The CDI was negatively correlated with academic achievement, although this correlation disappeared when performing partial correlations controlling for CDI-III. A regression analysis further corroborated that CDI-III was the only CDI factor related to low academic achievement. The results also show that the CDI-III and Introversion for boys, and the CDI-III and Neuroticism for girls, were the most predictive variables of low academic achievement.

Developing new scales to measure aspects of mentoring, including guidance in scientific communication (SciComm), is important to enhance success among trainees pursuing research careers in science and medicine. This study examined the psychometric properties of three new measures, based on social cognitive career theory (SCCT), as mentors address skills in scientific writing, oral presentation, and impromptu speaking. Faculty research mentors ( N = 194) completed online questionnaires assessing perceptions of mentoring barriers in SciComm, outcome expectations, and practice behaviors in research and SciComm. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses rendered support for a three-factor measure of barriers, one-factor measure of expected outcomes, and a five-factor measure of practices. Good support was also found for a path model that included the variables in the prediction of mentoring practices. Findings support applying SCCT to mentoring and clarify contextual barriers–choice outcome relations which can inform barrier-coping, SciComm interventions among mentors.

Population aging and policies to redirect long-term care toward home- and community-based services have led to increases in Medicaid home care spending in most states. Changes in state Medicaid home care policy generosity may result from changes in the number of persons served (i.e., Participation) and/or changes in quantities of services covered (i.e., Intensity). This study measures state Medicaid home care Participation and Intensity comprehensively using latent variables, and uses those latent variables to describe changes in Medicaid home care policy generosity over time and across states. Yearly state-level data from the Medicaid Statistical Information System (1999-2012) are analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Between 1999 and 2012, 29 states expanded both Participation and Intensity, whereas six states reduced both. In the remaining states, a trade-off occurred. Distinguishing between Medicaid home care Participation and Intensity deserves attention, as expansions along these two dimensions represent potentially different implications for beneficiaries.

Quantitative research into the topic of workplace learning among teachers has been limited due to the lack of measures that are applicable to the educational settings. In this study, items measuring teachers’ engagement in workplace learning activities were generated through literature review and discussions with schoolteachers; selected by the authors; and then tested in a field study. The sample involved a total of 500 schoolteachers, selected through a multistage cluster sampling procedure. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to test the hypothesised two-dimensional model for the construct of engagement in workplace learning activities. Results indicated that the proposed model acceptably fits the data and the loadings were all significant at p<.05, thus lending evidence for the construct validity of the instrument. Implications for the use of this scale in future workplace learning research, particularly in the educational settings, are discussed.

La EEEP puede ser usada con fiabilidad en su forma conjunta, resultando en una reducción de ítems, los cual es a menudo beneficioso para la investigación Oliva’s Escala para la Evaluación del Estilo Parental (EEEP) [Scale for the evaluation of parenting styles] asks adolescents about their parents’ education styles separately (“your father” and “your mother”) or in a combined way (“your parents”), but only the separated version has been tested for validity.  The objective of this work was to carry out a validation of the combined version. A sample of 1507 adolescents, aged 12 to 18 years, was recruited. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were run in two independent subsamples. Then, structural equation models (SEM) were run in order to test the association between the EEEP’s subscales and adolescent outcomes (optimism, pessimism, and academic achievement). Results showed a good fit of the instruments’ structure. Furthermore, the subscales showed associations with the outcomes. The EEEP can be reliably used in its combined form, which results in a reduction of items, often beneficial for research.

The overall performance of a manufacturing organization can be enhanced by thoroughly examine and monitor the activities of all departments such as production, inventory, maintenance, etc. involved in the manufacturing system. The present study highlights the relationships between different performance measure and overall performance from the perspective of the agricultural tool manufacturing industry. A path model consists of 13 observed variables, and four performance measures (latent variables) was developed and tested using SPSS software package and AMOS 21. The outcome of the present work is reflected by the respondent of 105 valid questionnaires who are occupied with agriculture tool manufacturing firms situated in the northern region of India. The outcome of confirmatory factor analysis showed that operational performance has higher path coefficient. The limitation of this work is that the findings are applicable to the specific sector of manufacturing industry only.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate those factors that are associated with the adoption of social networking sites from the perspective of Muslim users residing in Malaysia. Design/methodology/approach A complete self-administered questionnaire was collected from 223 Muslim users of social networking sites in Malaysia. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to sort the significant items for the constructs and to check the validity. Structural equation modelling was applied in testing the hypotheses and the fitness of the proposed model. Findings The results of full structural model attest that technological and social factors are the most significant factors behind the adoption of social networking sites. However, this is followed by an educational factor. Among Muslim users in Malaysia, the study does not find significant influence of brand or product communication behind this adoption. Originality/value The paper investigates those factors that are considered inevitable in the adoption of social networking sites. Invaluable findings were offered in the form of a structural model for the stakeholders of social networking sties. These findings can be used in planning and making decisions that may benefit all parties associated with it.

The purpose of this study was to create and validate a measure for jazz theory knowledge assessment. The Jazz Theory Measure (JTM) was created by exploring publications on jazz improvisation instruction and research studies that utilized jazz theory as a significant aspect of the study (i.e., dependent variable, independent variable, data collection). Latent jazz theory components (i.e., Key Knowledge, Scale Knowledge, and Chord Knowledge) were identified from an exploration of the literature and each was paired with several subtests. Items representing the JTM ( N = 60) demonstrate significant representation of the jazz theory components through alpha reliability (.98), and confirmatory factor analysis (standardized root mean square residual [SRMR] = .0327, comparative fit index [CFI] = .930, Tucker–Lewis index [TLI] = .907) providing support for the JTM as a valid and reliable measure of jazz theory knowledge. Further analysis suggests that music educators providing instruction in jazz improvisation should focus on building a foundation of jazz theory in the first 5 years of jazz instruction.
