This paper aims to identify and evaluate the bottlenecks and wastes in the loading, unloading, and in-transit processes of iron ore railcars using simulation. A field survey was conducted in one of the largest steel factories and a mine, and each process time was extracted using the work-study and time-study methods. The data for more than 34 thousand railcars were collected from the database of the steel company, Iran Rail Transport company, and a private rail transport company. Seven scenarios have been developed according to (a) operations management, (b) equipment procurement, and (c) infrastructure development. It was found that utilization of the automated loading system would improve performance by 20%. This causes a 24% increase in railcars’ turnover, which means obtaining US$10,000 additional income per railcar. It was expected, it would improve performance. Conversely, adding a railcar tippler and developing the tracks reduces performance.

Purpose In operations and supply chain management, time is largely one-dimensional – less is better – with much effort devoted to compressing, efficiently using, and competitively exploiting clock-time. However, by drawing on other literatures, the purpose of this paper is to understand implications for the field of operations management if we also emphasize how humans and organizations experience time, termed process-time, which is chronicled by events and stages of change. Design/methodology/approach After a brief review, the limitations of the recurrent time-oriented themes in operations management and the resulting short-termism are summarized. Next, sustainability is offered as an important starting point to explore the concept of temporality, including both clock- and process-time, as well as the implications of temporal orientation and temporal conflict in supply chains. Findings A framework that includes both management and stakeholder behavior is offered to illustrate how multiple temporal perspectives might be leveraged as a basis for an expanded and enriched understanding of more sustainable competitiveness in operations. Social implications Research by others emphasizes the importance of stakeholders to competitiveness. By recognizing that different stakeholder groups have varying temporal orientations and temporality, managers can establish objectives and systems that better reflect time-based diversity and diffuse temporal conflict. Originality/value This paper summarizes how time has been incorporated in operations management, as well as the challenges of short-termism. Sustainability forms the basis for exploring multiple perspectives of time and three key constructs: temporal orientation, temporality, and temporal conflict. A framework is proposed to better incorporate temporal perspectives as a basis for competitiveness in operations and supply chain management.

The work study done on the assembly line mainly deals with the time and motion study and work measurement to determine total time required to manufacture one engine and then applying lean manufacturing methods to fulfil the problem of productivity improvement. The first step of the work study will be the study of current process of production. After the collection of current process, time of all the assembly tasks involved is reduced using time study techniques. Along with time study, process analysis will be carried out which will give us idea of number of non-productive tasks carried out during the assembly and thus reducing them. Hence by implementing Value Stream Mapping method for lean manufacturing and reducing the non-productive tasks, the project will display the effort of increasing the productivity of the manual assembly line of Petter engine.

Commissioning of Konkan railway along the west coast in January 1998 was a major step towards infrastructure development in India. Completion of Konkan railway has provided impetus for the development of the coastal areas by connecting the major ports. The ports which are directly benefited by the completion of Konkan railway are: JNPT (Nhava Sheva), Mormugao and Mangalore. This paper aims to study the impact of infrastructure development, i.e. commissioning of Konkan railway on these three ports. The imports and exports from these ports prior to construction of Konkan railway are compared with the latest (2000-01) statistics of import and export. The changes in the volume and composition of traffic of these ports as a consequence of their increased accessibility are analysed. The share of the three ports in India's export trade is much more than in its import trade. Over half of India's exports of iron ore, over one third of the country's exports of POL products and one fourth of the exports of other liquids were handled by these three ports in 2000-01. Our analysis reveals that infrastructure development at and around the ports of western coast has a positive impact on the traffic handled by these ports. Value and volume of traffic handled by these ports have increased. With the improvement in infrastructure facilities for handling the specialised cargo, the import and export of liquid bulk cargo have significantly increased. The impact is most remarkable in case of JNPT. where the exports have increased at a higher rate than the imports. The improved connectivity of western coastal ports after the construction of Konkan railway has helped to relieve the congestion at the Mumbai port. With infrastructure development at ports and improvement in goods traffic handled by Konkan railway in due course of time, traffic at these ports will be further augmented.

One of the goals of developing a transport corridor is to promote socio-economic development by improving connectivity and sustainable transport operations, which largely depends on the operational strategy. Trade-off policies can be important tools for gaining the competitive advantage of road transport corridors, and thus, help facilitate sustainable growth and welfare. This article uses a case-based approach to observe the trade-offs in the first phase of transport infrastructure development, and then, in the second stage, further explores the trade-off variables in the transport operations strategy under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The results from the three cases of the parallel route system of the CPEC indicate that trade-off is an easily understandable and applicable method, which can foresee the operational gains or compromises for significant welfare of the regions. The implications of the trade-off are two fold, first is the “importance” of the trade-off, which is related to its impact on operational competitiveness. The other is the “sensitivity” of the trade-off, in terms of the change that will be caused to one variable when changing the other. The trade-off concept can be used for several landlocked transport corridors to achieve a competitive edge in transit trade.

The draw resonance instability of viscoelastic Giesekus fluids was studied by correlating the spinline extensional features and transit times of several kinematic waves in an isothermal melt spinning process. The critical drawdown ratios were critically dependent on the Deborah number (De, the ratio of material relaxation time to process time) and a single material parameter (αG) of the Giesekus fluid. In the intermediate range of αG, the stability status changed distinctively with increasing De, i.e., the spinning system was initially stabilized and subsequently destabilized, as De increases. In this αG regime, the level of velocity and extensional-thickening rheological property in the spinline became gradually enhanced at low De and weakened at high De. The draw resonance onsets for different values of αG were determined precisely using a simple indicator composed of several kinematic waves traveling the entire spinline and period of oscillation. The change in transit times of kinematic waves for varying De adequately reflected the effect of αG on the change in stability.

The Federal Customs Service of Russia declares the improvement in the quality of customs administration and reduction of the administrative burden on business through automation of registration and release of customs declarations filed by low-risk foreign trade operators (80% by 2020), enhancing foreign trade operator categorization by risk level. However, the main improvements in customs administration, enshrined in the government plans, retain the basic technologies and business processes unchanged, and thus preserve the main problems. As a result, Russia lags behind developed and some developing countries in international customs ratings. The article considers the most urgent problems in the customs sphere and presents proposals for their solution. We examine the problems of international transit related to the harmonization of customs documents and financial guarantees with countries involved in transit operations. The use of primary documents by economic operators, including the use of foreign electronic data, has been considered for electronic document circulation. With regard to non-tariff measures, the possibility of transferring control over compliance with technical regulation measures to domestic circulation is addressed. Another important issue is the possibility of introducing general financial guarantees in amounts adequate to non-payment risks. Big data involvement (producers, persons involved in the supply chain, goods turnover in the territory etc.) for risk management system development in the customs sphere is discussed. Conditions for the creation of consignment warehouses in Russia, for Internet shops in particular, are regarded as one of the important directions of foreign trade infrastructure development.
