Friction between the tow and tool surface normally happens during the tow production, fabric weaving, and application process and has an important influence on the quality of the woven fabric. Based on this fact, this paper studied the influence of tension and relative velocity on the three kinds of untwisted-glass-fiber tow-on-roller friction with a Capstan-based test setup. Furthermore, an improved nonlinear friction model taking both tension and velocity into account was proposed. According to statistical test results, firstly, the friction coefficient was found to be positively correlated with tension and relative velocity. Secondly, tension and velocity were complementary on the tow-on-roller friction behavior, with neither being superior to the other. Thirdly, an improved model was found to present well the nonlinear characteristics between friction coefficient and tension and velocity, and predicational results of the model were found to agree well with the observations from Capstan tests.

After modifying the Wahime/Bay friction model, a new friction model suitable for micro-forming process without lubrication is established. In this model, it is shows that the friction coefficient is a function of strain hardening exponent, the normal pressure and the initial yield stress of material. Based on the experimental data, the micro-upsetting process is simulated using the proposed friction model. The simulation results are used to investigate the size effect on the dry friction behavior. It is found that the Coulomb’s friction coefficient is dropping with miniaturization of specimens when the amount of reduction is not too large.

As the size of contacting and sliding tribosystems decrease, intermolecular or adhesive forces become significant partly due to nanometer size surface roughness. The presence of adhesion has a major influence on the interfacial contact and friction forces as well as the microtribosystem dynamics and thus influences the overall dynamic friction behavior. In this paper, a dynamic friction model that explicitly includes adhesion, interfacial damping and the system dynamics for realistic rough surfaces was developed. The results show that the amplitude and mean value of the time varying normal contact and friction forces increase in the presence of adhesion under continuous contact conditions. Also, due to the attractive nature of adhesion, its presence delays or eliminates the occurrence of loss of contact. Furthermore, in the presence of significant adhesion, dynamic friction behavior is significantly more complicated compared to the no adhesion case, and the dynamic friction coefficient predictions may be misleading. Thus, it is more appropriate to discuss dynamic friction force instead of dynamic friction coefficient under dynamic conditions.

For the description of a friction event it is necessary to understand the friction coefficient μ as a process-parameter dependent not only on the surface-structure but also for instance on the relative velocity, normal load, temperature and the event itself. In brake systems, for example, growing and destroying processes of hard thin patches determine the friction power and the transfer of kinetic energy into heat and plastic deformations, such as wear. So the interaction of friction and wear is given by an equilibrium of flow of different processes resulting in growing effects or lowering effects on the friction coefficient itself [2]–[4]. The aim of this paper is to show the detailed interaction of this topographical dynamics and the friction behavior with the Method of Cellular Automata.

A simple but realistic dynamic friction model for the lubricated sliding contact is developed based on decoupling the steady and unsteady terms in Reynolds equation. The model realistically captures the physics of friction behavior both when speed is increased unidirectionally or when operating under oscillating condition. The model can simulate the transition from boundary to mixed to full film regimes as the speed is increased. Two different classes of simulations are performed to show the utility of the model: the so-called quasisteady, where the sliding velocity is varied very slowly, and the oscillating sliding velocity, where the friction coefficient exhibits a hysteresis type behavior. Both categories of simulation are verified by comparing the results with published experimental data.

There are many typical symmetric large plastic deformation problems in aluminum alloy stamping. Warm stamping technology can improve the formability of materials and obtain parts with high-dimensional accuracy. Friction behavior in the stamping process is significant for the forming quality. An accurate friction coefficient is helpful in improving the prediction accuracy of forming defects. It is hard to obtain a unified and precise friction model through simple experiments due to the complicated contact conditions. To explore the effect of friction behavior on the forming quality, warm friction experiments of the AA6061 aluminum alloy and P20 steel with different process parameters were carried out using a high-temperature friction tester CFT-I (Equipment Type), including temperatures, the interface load, and sliding speeds. The variation curves of the friction coefficient with various parameters were obtained and analyzed. The results show that the friction coefficient increases with temperature and decreases with the sliding speed and load. Then, the influences of process parameters on the surface morphology of the samples after friction were observed by an optical microscope; adhesive wear occurred when the temperature increased, and the surface scratch increased and deepened with the increase in the load. Finally, the friction coefficient models of the speed and load were established by analyzing the data with Original software. Compared with the experimental and the finite element analysis results of the symmetrical part, the errors of the velocity friction model in thickness and springback angle are less than 4% and 5%, respectively. The mistakes of the load friction model are less than 6% and 7%, respectively. The accuracy of the two friction models is higher than that of the constant friction coefficient. Therefore, those coefficient models can effectively improve the simulation accuracy of finite element software.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a telecommunications technology that is able to pass the communication service in Internet Protocol networks so as to allow communicating between users in an IP network. However VoIP technology still has weakness in the Quality of Service (QoS). VOPI weaknesses is affected by the selection of the physical servers used. In this research, VoIP is configured on Linux operating system with Asterisk as VoIP application server and integrated on a Raspberry Pi by using wired and wireless network as the transmission medium. Because of depletion of IPv4 capacity that can be used on the network, it needs to be applied to VoIP system using the IPv6 network protocol with supports devices. The test results by using a wired transmission medium that has obtained are the average delay is 117.851 ms, jitter is 5.796 ms, packet loss is 0.38%, throughput is 962.861 kbps, 8.33% of CPU usage and 59.33% of memory usage. The analysis shows that the wired transmission media is better than the wireless transmission media and wireless-wired.

Abstract Objective External dacryocystorhinostomy is thought to cause mucociliary dysfunction by damaging the mucosa, in turn affecting ciliary activity and mucus quality. This study investigated the effect of external dacryocystorhinostomy on sinonasal function. Methods Patients scheduled for unilateral external dacryocystorhinostomy who underwent endoscopic nasal examination and paranasal sinus computed tomography were included in this study. A saccharine test was performed on the planned surgical side and the mucociliary clearance time was determined. The sinonasal quality of life was measured in all patients, pre-operatively and at six months post-operatively, using the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22. The Lund–Kennedy endoscopic score was also determined in all patients, both pre- and post-operatively. Results The study comprised 28 patients (22 females and 6 males). A statistically significant difference was found between the pre- and post-operative saccharine test results (p = 0.006), but not between the pre- and post-operative Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 scores (p > 0.05). Conclusion This study is one of only a few to investigate the effect of external dacryocystorhinostomy on sinonasal function. The results showed that external dacryocystorhinostomy impairs mucociliary clearance. The surgical procedure is well tolerated and does not significantly change nasal symptom scores.

Clinching is an economical sheet joining technique that does not require any consumables. Besides, after its usage, the joints can be recycled without much difficulty, making clinching one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing processes and a topic of high research potential. In this work, the influence of surface roughness on the load-bearing capacity (strength) of joints made by the mechanical clinching method in cross-tensile and lap-shear configuration is explored. Additionally, a correlating mathematical model is established between the joint strength and its surface parameters, namely, friction coefficient and wrap angle, based on the belt friction phenomenon. This correlation also explains the generally observed higher strength in lap-shear configuration compared to cross-tensile in clinching joints. From the mathematical correlation, through friction by increasing the average surface roughness, it is possible to increase the strength of the joint. The quality of the thus produced joint is analyzed by cross-sectional examination and comparison with simulation results. Experimentally, it is shown that an increment of >50% in the joint strength is achieved in lap-shear configuration by modifying the surface roughness and increasing the friction coefficient at the joint interface. Further, the same surface modification does not significantly affect the strength in cross-tensile configuration.

AbstractThe design of micropolarizer array (MPA) patterns in Fourier domain provides an efficient approach to reconstruct and investigate the polarization information. Inspired by Alenin’s works, in this paper, we propose an improved design model to cover both 2 × N MPAs and other original MPAs, by which an entirely new class of MPA patterns is suggested. The performance of the new patterns is evaluated through Fourier domain analysis and numerical simulations compared with the existing MPAs. Particularly, we analyze the reconstruction accuracy of the first three Stokes parameters and degree of linear polarization (DoLP) in detail. The experimental results confirm that the 2 × 2 × 2 MPA provides the highest reconstruction quality of s0, s1, s2 and DoLP in terms of quantitative measures and visual quality, while the 3 × 3 diagonal MPA achieves the state-of-the-art best results in case of single-snapshot systems. The guidance of this extended model and new diagonal MPAs show its massive potential for the division of focal plane (DoFP) polarization imaging applications.
