This work presents a novel approach for monocular dense Simultaneous Localization and Mapping. The surface to be estimated is represented as a piecewise planar surface, defined as a group of surfels each having as parameters its position and normal. These parameters are then directly estimated from the raw camera pixels measurements, by a Gauss-Newton iterative process. The representation of the surface as a group of surfels has several advantages. It allows the recovery of robust and accurate pixel depths, without the need to use a computationally demanding depth regularization schema. This has the further advantage of avoiding the use of a physically unlikely surface smoothness prior. New surfels can be correctly initialized from the information present in nearby surfels, avoiding also the need to use an expensive initialization routine commonly needed in Gauss-Newton methods. The method was written in the GLSL shading language, allowing the usage of GPU thus achieving real-time. The method was tested against several datasets, showing both its depth and normal estimation correctness, and its scene reconstruction quality. The results presented here showcase the usefulness of the more physically grounded piecewise planar scene depth prior, instead of the more commonly pixel depth independence and smoothness prior.

Creation of head 3D models from videos or pictures of the head by using close-range photogrammetry techniques has many applications in clinical, commercial, industrial, artistic, and entertainment areas. This work aims to create a methodology for improving 3D head reconstruction, with a focus on using selfie videos as the data source. Then, using this methodology, we seek to propose changes for the general-purpose 3D reconstruction algorithm to improve the head reconstruction process. We define the improvement of the 3D head reconstruction as an increase of reconstruction quality (which is lowering reconstruction errors of the head and amount of semantic noise) and reduction of computational load. We proposed algorithm improvements that increase reconstruction quality by removing image backgrounds and by selecting diverse and high-quality frames. Algorithm modifications were evaluated on videos of the mannequin head. Evaluation results show that baseline reconstruction is improved 12 times due to the reduction of semantic noise and reconstruction errors of the head. The reduction of computational demand was achieved by reducing the frame number needed to process, reducing the number of image matches required to perform, reducing an average number of feature points in images, and still being able to provide the highest precision of the head reconstruction.

Abstract. Optical remote sensing (ORS) combined with the computerized tomography (CT) technique is a powerful tool to retrieve a two-dimensional concentration map over an area under investigation. Whereas medical CT usually uses a beam number of hundreds of thousands, ORS-CT usually uses a beam number of dozens, thus severely limiting the spatial resolution and the quality of the reconstructed map. The smoothness a priori information is, therefore, crucial for ORS-CT. Algorithms that produce smooth reconstructions include smooth basis function minimization, grid translation and multiple grid (GT-MG), and low third derivative (LTD), among which the LTD algorithm is promising because of the fast speed. However, its theoretical basis must be clarified to better understand the characteristics of its smoothness constraints. Moreover, the computational efficiency and reconstruction quality need to be improved for practical applications. This paper first treated the LTD algorithm as a special case of the Tikhonov regularization that uses the approximation of the third-order derivative as the regularization term. Then, to seek more flexible smoothness constraints, we successfully incorporated the smoothness seminorm used in variational interpolation theory into the reconstruction problem. Thus, the smoothing effects can be well understood according to the close relationship between the variational approach and the spline functions. Furthermore, other algorithms can be formulated by using different seminorms. On the basis of this idea, we propose a new minimum curvature (MC) algorithm by using a seminorm approximating the sum of the squares of the curvature, which reduces the number of linear equations to half that in the LTD algorithm. The MC algorithm was compared with the non-negative least square (NNLS), GT-MG, and LTD algorithms by using multiple test maps. The MC algorithm, compared with the LTD algorithm, shows similar performance in terms of reconstruction quality but requires only approximately 65 % the computation time. It is also simpler to implement than the GT-MG algorithm because it directly uses high-resolution grids during the reconstruction process. Compared with the traditional NNLS algorithm, it shows better performance in the following three aspects: (1) the nearness of reconstructed maps is improved by more than 50 %, (2) the peak location accuracy is improved by 1–2 m, and (3) the exposure error is improved by 2 to 5 times. Testing results indicated the effectiveness of the new algorithm according to the variational approach. More specific algorithms could be similarly further formulated and evaluated. This study promotes the practical application of ORS-CT mapping of atmospheric chemicals.

RGB-D cameras are employed in several research fields and application scenarios. Choosing the most appropriate sensor has been made more difficult by the increasing offer of available products. Due to the novelty of RGB-D technologies, there was a lack of tools to measure and compare performances of this type of sensor from a metrological perspective. The recent ISO 10360-13:2021 represents the most advanced international standard regulating metrological characterization of coordinate measuring systems. Part 13, specifically, considers 3D optical sensors. This paper applies the methodology of ISO 10360-13 for the characterization and comparison of three RGB-D cameras produced by Intel® RealSense™ (D415, D455, L515) in the close range (100–1500 mm). ISO 10360-13 procedures, which focus on metrological performances, are integrated with additional tests to evaluate systematic errors (acquisition of flat objects, 3D reconstruction of objects). The present paper proposes an off-the-shelf comparison which considers the performance of the sensors throughout their acquisition volume. Results have exposed the strengths and weaknesses of each device. The D415 device showed better reconstruction quality on tests strictly related to the short range. The L515 device performed better on systematic depth errors; finally, the D455 device achieved better results on tests related to the standard.

Abstract This paper deals with an inverse problem that consists of an attenuation coefficient identification for the non-stationary radiation transfer equation. To solve the problem, we propose a method that uses several pulses of radiation to extrapolate ideal projection data corresponding to a non-scattering medium. Numerical experiments on the Shepp-Logan phantom show that the method proposed improves the reconstruction quality.

Abstract Passive Acoustic Mapping (PAM) is an ultrasoundbased imaging method developed for monitoring therapeutic ultrasound. By using diagnostic transducers to passively record the acoustic signals that are emitted by cavitation bubbles, the origin of the bubbles can be reconstructed and displayed as intensity maps. In this study, two matrix arrays with different aperture sizes were used for the volumetric reconstruction of simulated and experimental data. In a second step, the number of elements being used for the reconstruction was reduced by more than the factor of eight in order to assess the influence on the imaging quality. In the numerical part of the study, the image quality was greatly improved by increasing the aperture size, while a high number of elements used for the reconstruction merely offers minor improvements. The experimentally obtained results were able to confirm the numerical findings regarding the achievable reconstruction quality.

AbstractIn this study, a fast data-driven optimization approach, named bias-accelerated subset selection (BASS), is proposed for learning efficacious sampling patterns (SPs) with the purpose of reducing scan time in large-dimensional parallel MRI. BASS is applicable when Cartesian fully-sampled k-space measurements of specific anatomy are available for training and the reconstruction method for undersampled measurements is specified; such information is used to define the efficacy of any SP for recovering the values at the non-sampled k-space points. BASS produces a sequence of SPs with the aim of finding one of a specified size with (near) optimal efficacy. BASS was tested with five reconstruction methods for parallel MRI based on low-rankness and sparsity that allow a free choice of the SP. Three datasets were used for testing, two of high-resolution brain images ($$\text {T}_{2}$$ T 2 -weighted images and, respectively, $$\text {T}_{1\rho }$$ T 1 ρ -weighted images) and another of knee images for quantitative mapping of the cartilage. The proposed approach has low computational cost and fast convergence; in the tested cases it obtained SPs up to 50 times faster than the currently best greedy approach. Reconstruction quality increased by up to 45% over that provided by variable density and Poisson disk SPs, for the same scan time. Optionally, the scan time can be nearly halved without loss of reconstruction quality. Quantitative MRI and prospective accelerated MRI results show improvements. Compared with greedy approaches, BASS rapidly learns effective SPs for various reconstruction methods, using larger SPs and larger datasets; enabling better selection of sampling-reconstruction pairs for specific MRI problems.

Indoor structures are composed of ceilings, walls and floors that need to be modeled for a variety of applications. This paper proposes an approach to reconstructing models of indoor structures in complex environments. First, semantic pre-processing, including segmentation and occlusion construction, is applied to segment the input point clouds to generate semantic patches of structural primitives with uniform density. Then, a primitives extraction method with detected boundary is introduced to approximate both the mathematical surface and the boundary of the patches. Finally, a constraint-based model reconstruction is applied to achieve the final topologically consistent structural model. Under this framework, both the geometric and structural constraints are considered in a holistic manner to assure topologic regularity. Experiments were carried out with both synthetic and real-world datasets. The accuracy of the proposed method achieved an overall reconstruction quality of approximately 4.60 cm of root mean square error (RMSE) and 94.10% Intersection over Union (IoU) of the input point cloud. The development can be applied for structural reconstruction of various complex indoor environments.

Marchenko methods can retrieve Green’s functions and focusing functions from single-sided reflection data and a smooth velocity model, as essential components of a redatuming process. Recent studies also indicate that a modified Marchenko scheme can reconstruct primary-only reflection responses directly from reflection data without requiring a priori model information. To provide insight into the artifacts that arise when input data are not ideally sampled, we study the effects of subsampling in both types of Marchenko methods in 2D earth and data — by analyzing the behavior of Marchenko-based results on synthetic data subsampled in sources or receivers. With a layered model, we find that for Marchenko redatuming, subsampling effects jointly depend on the choice of integration variable and the subsampling dimension, originated from the integrand gather in the multidimensional convolution process. When reflection data are subsampled in a single dimension, integrating on the other yields spatial gaps together with artifacts, whereas integrating on the subsampled dimension produces aliasing artifacts but without spatial gaps. Our complex subsalt model indicates that the subsampling may lead to very strong artifacts, which can be further complicated by having limited apertures. For Marchenko-based primary estimation (MPE), subsampling below a certain fraction of the fully sampled data can cause MPE iterations to diverge, which can be mitigated to some extent by using more robust iterative solvers, such as least-squares QR. Our results, covering redatuming and primary estimation in a range of subsampling scenarios, provide insights that can inform acquisition sampling choices as well as processing parameterization and quality control, e.g., to set up appropriate data filters and scaling to accommodate the effects of dipole fields, or to help ensuring that the data interpolation achieves the desired levels of reconstruction quality that minimize subsampling artifacts in Marchenko-derived fields and images.
