Speakers of York English (UK) use a zero article with definite singular nouns (e.g., “They used to follow Ø river”), which is impossible in Standard English. We probe the possibility that this form is a remnant from Old English, when there were no articles as they are currently found in Modern English, rather than a more contemporary development. We trace the diachronic trajectory of the zero article in historical-descriptive grammars and test social and linguistic constraints on its use in York English in a logistic regression analysis. The results show that information structure is a significant predictor of the zero article across all generations of the community and that the zero article is used in the same way as it was used as far back as Old English. However, it exhibits heightened usage among the older and younger generations, exhibiting a U-shaped curve. We suggest that this pattern demonstrates longitudinal maintenance of a conservative feature, which is suppressed in middle-age as the result of social pressures. In this way, this case study adds insight into the fate of dialect features in contemporary speech communities. It also highlights the importance of combining insights from different strands in linguistics for understanding the evolution of syntactic variants like the zero article.

Abstract A recent resurgence of interest in Old Norse linguistic borrowings in Old English has greatly expanded our knowledge of the contact situation between these two speech communities in the early medieval period and beyond. However, there are a significant number of words that have been considered borrowings in the “other” direction, i. e. from Old English to Old Norse, which have not attracted the same amount of attention in current scholarship. Much of this material requires reassessment and this paper provides a case study of two parallel compound formations in both languages – OE bærsynnig [mann]/ON bersynðugr [maðr] (‘one who is openly sinful; publican’), and OE healsbōc/ON hálsbók (‘phylactery, amulet’, lit. ‘neck-book’) – that have traditionally been considered loan translations from Old English to Old Norse with little evidence other than their formation from cognate elements. In the absence of clear-cut linguistic criteria for identifying loan translations between these two closely related languages, this paper draws on a range of literary evidence to argue for a strong likelihood of a relationship between the two compounds. Both words offer important evidence for biblical translation practices, and contribute to our knowledge about the Christianisation of Norse speaking peoples and Anglo-Norse language contact in Viking Age England.

AbstractIn Old English, the ditransitive construction with an accusative (direct) object and a dative (indirect) object occurred with two alternating object orders: ACC-DAT vs. DAT-ACC. This study examines the motivations behind the OE speakers’ choice for one of both orders. The effect of 16 factors was evaluated based on a corpus sample of N = 2409 sentences drawn from the York-Toronto-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Old English Prose (Taylor et al. 2003). The data was analysed by means of a mixed-effects logistic regression analysis. The results indicate that the ACC+DAT alternation was largely driven by the same factors that motivate the dative alternation in later stages of British English. However, no evidence was found for specific verb preferences in Old English, which suggests that the OE object alternation was less driven by semantics than the dative alternation in PDE. It is argued that the results further substantiate Wolk et al.’s (2012) claim that the cognitive mechanisms underlying present-day probabilistic patterns also underlie past variation.

The study aimed to assess the prevalence and correlates of hazardous, harmful or dependent alcohol use (HHDA) and drug use among persons 15 years and older in South Africa. In a national cross-sectional 2017 survey, 39,210 persons 15 years and older (Median=34 years) responded to a questionnaire on substance and health variables. Logistic regression was used to assess the determinants of HHDA and any drug use. Results indicate that (10.3%) engaged HHDA, 16.5% among males and 4.6% among females, and past 3-month drug use was 8.6%, 13.3% among males and 4.1% among females. In adjusted logistic regression analysis, among men, middle age (25-34 year olds), higher education, urban residence, drug use, and psychological distress were positively and Indian or Asian and White population groups were negatively associated with HHDA. Among women, middle age (25-34 year olds), Coloureds, residing on rural farms and urban areas, drug use and psychological distress were positively and older age (55 years and older), and Indians or Asians were negatively associated with HHDA. In adjusted logistic regression analysis, among men, having Grade 8-11 education, Coloureds, being unemployed, and HHDA were positively and middle and older age (25 years and older) and being a student or learner were negatively associated with past 3-month any drug use. Among women, Coloureds, Indians or Asians, and HHDA were positively and older age (45 years and older) was negatively associated with past 3-month and drug use. About one in ten participants engaged HHDA and any drug use, and several sociodemographic and health indicators were identified associated with HHDA and any drug use.

The casualties in the teenage group in Purbalingga Regency averaged 21.25% of the total accident victims in this area. This relatively large proportion requires efforts through various approaches to reduce the high number of accidents, considering that this group of age is a very important period in people's growth process. This study aims to identify the effect of traffic knowledge on teenage traffic behaviour taking SMK YPT 1 Purbalingga as the case study location. In its analytical process, this research uses descriptive quantitative analysis methods and logistic regression analysis. The output of logistic regression using realstatistic software, identified that the ownership of the driving license provides an opportunity for the occurrence of a bad traffic behaviour. In addition, the better knowledge about signs will provide a role for the possibility of good traffic behaviour. Moreover, the low understanding of road marking gives a probability of bad traffic behaviour.

Abstract Villages with significant artistic and cultural value have been developed throughout centuries of turbulent past of Montenegrin coastal and hinterland area. Today, these settlements represent a valuable source of information and are a common subject of research and inspiration to many architects. Through the example of recently designed development, this research aims to show the methods and advantages of contemporary design in traditional context. The review of the traditional architecture and urban design gives insight into qualitative and functional characteristics of building styles that witness centuries of experience and are therefore considered as sustainable. Methodological reference to the traditional building construction considers all the influencing factors that determine the qualitative and functional advantages of local ways of construction. The aim of the research is to implement the research process and to initiate the revival of traditional settlements in order to regain the significance they used to have, in contrast to the presently failed urban attempts. There is a tendency to give preference of designing in context of traditional architecture, considering the advantage of such constructions.

In 1997, Eliyahu Goldratt proposed a method called critical chain project management (CCPM) to minimize the inefficiencies identified in traditional project management. The project management community accepted the proposed method as a viable alternative. However, to allow its implementation with a multiproject system, more research was necessary. Seeking to identify the key factors that influence the performance of the multiproject system applying the CCPM method, we performed a case study. Logistic regression analysis showed that applying the CCPM method in a multiproject system allows for better time estimation of activities and facilitates the allocation of critical resources.

This research was conducted in Cicendo District, Bandung City, West Java. To analyze factors that influence changes in fish consumers behaviour and preference before the COVID-19 pandemic. Case study with quantitative and qualitative data analysis was employed and an accidental sampling technique method using 100 respondents. The results showed changes in factors during the COVID-19 pandemic are the system and place of purchase, the frequency of fish consumption, the amount of consumption of fish and products consumed, and the price of fish. Based on binary logistic regression analysis, before and after the Covid-19 pandemic, the Wald test showed that income, education and age variables had an influence on preferences between fresh fish and processed fish. Preferences between fresh freshwater fish and marine fish before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wald test shows that employment and income variables have an influence.
