Abstract This paper explores Namahage of Akita Prefecture as it assumes three different instantiations: 1) enactment as a private ritual within individual households on New Year’s Eve; 2) performance as a public festival at a shrine in mid-February; and 3) celebration as an “element” inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. I argue that in the first instance, Namahage is part of a vernacular religious “structure of feeling” in which religious elements are inseparable from community life; in the second instantiation, religion is more explicit and codified; and in the third iteration, religion is only vaguely articulated. Tracing the “same” tradition through different forms provides insight into the changing needs of communities and into the dynamics of change itself. With this in mind, I propose a model called hrönirism through which to broadly conceptualize notions of change and difference within traditions such as matsuri.

Indonesia is a country that has diversity in ethnicity, ethnicity, race, language, religion, and culture. However, this diversity is capable of causing conflicts both internally and externally. As with many cases that occur in Indonesia. Religion itself is a foothold, belief, and life guide, even as a scapegoat for conflicts in society. But other than the tengger tribe located in Lumajang Regency, Malang Regency, Pasuruan Regency and Probolinggo Regency, there are three religions that coexist in one village namely Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. In the midst of pluralism, different societies of understanding and belief turned out to be able to have an attitude of tolerance and mutual respect between each other. Religious diversity is not a problem for the agrosari community to interact in carrying out daily activities. Regarding tolerance among religious people has recently become a very sticky issue among academics and the public. Local wisdom and culture are solutions to overcome this problem. Local wisdom in the Tengger tribe community is inseparable from the values of Javanese culture, as well as the cultural heritage of Majapahit which is still developing with mutual respect, tolerance, and respect for ancestral spirits and there are no striking differences in ethnicity other than differences in religious beliefs. Togetherness is manifested in the form of traditional rituals such as the Unan-Unan ceremony, Bari'an (Selamatan). Each religion has its own demands for tolerance in the Tengger tribe is ingrained, the Tengger tribe community also upholds equality and democracy in community life and respects religious leaders and dukun (sepiritual teachers) rather than administrative leaders. Because all are brothers, all families, still peaceful and harmonious, which is the mandate and ancestral heritage.

Intricate paper cutting of Southern Thailand is a traditional folk art, which is passed down from one generation to another. However, there are no detailed studies or records of the historical backgrounds, beliefs, and cultural animation of Thai-Buddhist culture in Southern Thailand concerning this folk art. This study, therefore, aims to examine this art form in Songkhla and Nakhon Sri Thammarat provinces, which have their own cultural identities. The goal is to register this art form as a part of cultural heritage. The compilation of vital data includes (1) paper characteristics, (2) paper engraving methods, (3) colours, (4) instruments, (5) pattern designing, (6) purposes of the arts, (7) origins and history, and (8) knowledge of transferring methods. The findings reveal the origins of the beliefs and Buddhist faith of the community. The intricate paper cutting techniques are still maintained in the form of decorations found at auspicious events, festivals, and cultural ceremonies in every region of Thailand. The techniques of this art form are in decline but its use still prevails in community life, remaining favourites at auspicious festivities and cultural events for the sake of conserving distinct identities.
