The purpose of this paper is to review current literature on knowledge management and highlight the importance of knowledge audit in bringing about a holistic knowledge solution to knowledge management. Based on the review of literature on knowledge management, this study points out the role of knowledge audit in solving the challenges in organizations’ tacit and explicit knowledge. Specifically, the paper concentrates on knowledge audit, knowledge risk and international and national standards on knowledge audit processes. The contribution of this study to literature are the suggestions that knowledge risk and international standards procedures could be applied to knowledge audit. The important conclusion of this paper is that knowledge risk management has not been fully explored in the study of knowledge audit. The paper addresses the research question of what organizations must embark on in the process of knowledge audit. The paper attempts to provide answer to the question by highlighting the importance of knowledge audit and the reasons why organizations carry out knowledge audit, and also the existing knowledge audit frameworks and methodologies.

The purpose of this conceptual article is to develop argumentation of the knowledge assets of a firm as consisting of three constructs, to extend the conventional explicit, tacit dichotomy by including potential knowledge. The article highlights the role of knowledge, which has so far not been utilized in value creation. The underlying assumption in the article is that knowledge assets can be thought of as embedded in the relationships between individuals in the firm, rather than possessed by single actors. The concept of potential knowledge is explained with selected social network and knowledge management literature. The findings suggest that the ideal social network structure for explicit knowledge is centralized, for tacit knowledge it is distributed, and for potential knowledge decentralized. Practically, the article provides a framework for understanding the connection between knowledge assets and social network structures, thus helping managers of firms in designing suitable social network structures for different types of knowledge.

Research on innovation practices reinforces the notion that majority of innovation projects fail systematically due to being managed as raw technology projects. Open forms of innovation where internal and external ideas are leveraged across the organisation are gaining importance over the internal and centralised approach to R&D. India, during the last 15 years, has been spiralling ahead towards ultimate economic success based on its 'knowledge-based talent pool'. Innovation has become a top strategic focus for most Indian companies. Seeing the growing importance of innovation and knowledge management, a need was felt to understand how organisations manage their knowledge capital so as to promote innovation. This paper aims to provide insights into how an organisation manages knowledge through culture, structure, technology and leadership, so as to promote acquisition and application of knowledge which leads to innovation. The study brings out the importance of tacit knowledge embedded in the firm's culture, structure and leadership as a complement to the explicit knowledge embedded in the firm's technology and documents.

The paper deals with aspects of standardization in relation to international developments. In the E. U. the role of the organization for standardization, CEN, is changing. This is the result of the tie of standards with the directives issued by the E.C. and affects the National Standards. For shipping and shipbuilding, IMO will be the reference. ISO is the international organization to develop the standards. In Europe, standardization for the maritime industry, the international (ISO) developments and the role of CEN in relation to Council Directives of the E.C. are the concern of the administrators in Brussels. CEN TC 300, the CEN Technical Committee for Shipbuilding, is responsible for the liaison between ISO, IMO, and the national standard organizations. A review is given of the constraints, advantages and disadvantages of international standards for the shipbuilding industry.

PurposeThe aim of this paper is to explore the dichotomous role of knowledge through an examination of tacit and explicit knowledge in organizational change contexts.Design/methodology/approachThe study's aim is achieved by an analytical review of the seminal and contemporary knowledge management literature.FindingsThe paper contributes to the current body of knowledge management literature by analyzing a wide range of key literature and presenting a contemporary overview that compares the role of tacit and explicit knowledge within organizational change contexts.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings contribute toward theoretical development in the knowledge management field by providing researchers with future research directions to build upon previous theoretical understandings and advance our collective knowledge of the research domain.Practical implicationsThe paper offers practical and pragmatic insights that will help firm managers to use tacit and/or explicit knowledge to manage organizational change.Originality/valueThis article presents an original comparative table that summarizes and compares the key understandings and insights from across the literature sources on a range of important aspects, and then presents implications for the two knowledge typologies. The paper also presents an original research framework containing a structured database of related calls for research by the latest academic publications. Furthermore, it provides specific and informed managerial recommendations for best practice in the integration of these knowledge typologies into organizational change management.

The pollination ecology in agroecosystems tackles a landscape in which plants and pollinators need to adjust, or be adjusted, to human intervention. A valid, widely applied approach is to regard pollination as a link between specific plants and their pollinators. However, recent evidence has added landscape features for a wider ecological perspective. Are we going in the right direction? Are existing methods providing pollinator monitoring tools suitable for understanding agroecosystems? In Italy, we needed to address these questions to respond to government pressure to implement pollinator monitoring in agroecosystems. We therefore surveyed the literature, grouped methods and findings, and evaluated approaches. We selected studies that may contain directions and tools directly linked to pollinators and agroecosystems. Our analysis revealed four main paths that must come together at some point: (i) the research question perspective, (ii) the advances of landscape analysis, (iii) the role of vegetation, and (iv) the gaps in our knowledge of pollinators taxonomy and behavior. An important conclusion is that the pollinator scale is alarmingly disregarded. Debate continues about what features to include in pollinator monitoring and the appropriate level of detail: we suggest that the pollinator scale should be the main driver.

Purpose: The purpose of the article was to present the methodology followed and findings of a knowledge audit at a South African retail bank.Design/methodology/approach: The article addresses the following research question: ‘What methodology should be followed when conducting a knowledge audit for a retail bank?’ The audit followed a mixed method research methodology. A questionnaire was emailed to a sample of employees to determine their knowledge requirements and 30 senior managers were interviewed in order to obtain a strategic perspective on the knowledge management requirements of the bank.Findings: The commitment to knowledge management was generally positive, but it varies across business units. The bank has not defined which knowledge areas are critical in order to improve its current or future performance. Specific knowledge gaps were identified and a knowledge map was compiled to indicate knowledge flow in the bank.Implications: The article gives a detailed description of the methodology when conducting the knowledge audit. The knowledge audit attempted to address the most critical knowledge requirements of a South African retail bank. The audit helped to make the knowledge in the bank visible and helped the bank to understand the value and contribution of knowledge to the organisational performance.
