This article explores the relationship between race and finance. By looking closer at risk, this article seeks to contribute to the literature in three ways: First, the concepts of risk and uncertainty need to be understood from a post-colonial perspective. Second, through a post-colonial reading of risk, we seek to develop a different concept of risk itself which emphasises its three qualities of de-humanisation, de-socialisation, and de-territorialisation. Last but not least, we propose to understand the post-colonial critique not only as a reconstruction of Europe’s past, as Dipesh Chakrabarty has named it, but locate it at the intersection of the present and the future: The post-colonial critique is enacted as soon as Europe’s future is imagined through risk.

The article deals mainly with the risk analysis and uncertainty of a risk of renewable resources. It also mentions the importance of managing the risks associated with the uncertainty of a risk of renewable resources. Specifically, in the paper addressed the relationship between risk and uncertainty, their interdependence, and the possibilities of how to work with uncertainty at risk. The distinguishing factor between the risk and the uncertainty is that risk is seen as a measurable property and has a place in the calculation of probability, while uncertainty does not have such property. The paper deals with an approach to this situation.

Learning from the past prepares one for being able to cope with the future. History is made up of strings of relationships. This article follows a historical line from colonialism, through apartheid to post-colonialism in order to illustrate inter-religious relations in South-Africa and how each context determines these relations. Social cohesion is enhanced by a post-colonial theology of religions based on the current context. By describing the relationship between Christians and Muslims during the 17th–18th centuries in the Cape Colony, lessons can be deduced to guide inter-religious relations in a post-colonial era in South Africa. One of the most prominent Muslim leaders during the 17th century in the Cape Colony was Sheik Yusuf al-Makassari. His influence determined the future face of Islam in the Cape Colony and here, during the 18th century, ethics started playing a crucial role in determining the relationship between Christians and Muslims. The ethical guidance of the Imams formed the Muslim communities whilst ethical decline was apparent amongst the Christian colonists during the same period. The place of ethics as determinative of future inter-religious dialogue is emphasised. Denial and exclusion characterised relationships between Christians and Muslims. According to a post-colonial understanding of inter-religious contact the equality and dignity of non-Christian religions are to be acknowledged. In the postcolonial and postapartheid struggle for equality, also of religions, prof Graham Duncan, to whom this article is dedicated, contributed to the process of acknowledging the plurality of the religious reality in South Africa.

AbstractThis paper investigates whether being “physically insecure” (being at risk of not continuing to meet one's physical needs in the future) should be thought of as a constituent of current wellbeing. In §1, it is argued that we cannot understand the value of security in terms of “freedom from fear”. In §2, it is argued that the reliablist approach to epistemology can help us to construct an account of why physical security is valuable, by relating security to the conditions of agency for practically and epistemically limited animals. In §3, this argument is compared with other attempts to understand the value of physical security. In §4, the relationship between security and threats of rights violation is clarified. In §5, the epistemic analogy of §2 is used to suggest a difference between the concepts of “security” and “capability”.

This review article explores several latest endeavours that theorise the state and globalisation. The aim is to reflect further on some of the wider follies that lie within the ambition of debates on the state and globalisation. By uniting common themes throughout the review – revolving around issues of state capacity in the post-colonial world, the relationship between globalisation and international relations, and the very meaning of globality – the review raises a series of questions for further research on the state and globalisation. Most significantly, it seeks to question the future of critical theorising on the state and globalisation within international studies. It does so by arguing that there remain serious question-begging assumptions about capitalism that lie at the core of present general theories of the state and globalisation that, if overlooked, might also blunt the precepts of critical international theorising.

Futuro/escola. Etnografia. Jovens.  Dilemmas about future and school: ethnographic narratives of young students ABSTRACT The relationship of young high school students with the future and the school is the object of study of this article. It is based on the ethnographic approach, situated on the border between anthropology and education. Thus, the field notebook, ethnographic notes, interviews, photographs, participant observation and textual productions were used as ways of apprehending a cut of social reality. Categories such as school knowledge and youths are articulated, favoring a post-critical and post-colonial approach to thinking about the future and its subjects. It operates on the logic that there is a polyphony in student voices that can be heard as a form of curriculum production thinking dissent as possible paths from the idea of youths in transit addressing the relationship of young people with their educational processes with the horizon future. This article presents the idea of the future as an ethnographic category and this is a creative dimension of the modes of subjectivation and difference. Future/school. Ethnography. <?page nr="97"?>Abstract What should students be, and be becoming, in the university of the future? In this paper, I take my cue from the 1946 Charter of Grenoble in exploring the possibility of conceptualizing students as both workers and workers-in-training called to engage in a very particular kind of work: that of defending freedom from oppression. First, I address the relationship between oppression, freedom, and violence, and consider what it might mean to understand involvement in anti-oppression work as a central component of student identity rather than merely an extra-curricular activity, or something that some students choose to do in addition to studying. Second, I discuss a particular configuration of desire that works to further oppression, namely fascism, which I argue that students have a duty to oppose. Finally, I examine the political philosophy of antifascism as the historically most effective antidote to fascism, and consider the specific role that students might be called to play in antifascist work. I conclude with a brief exploration of the place of place in determining how students should be—and be becoming—antifascist, especially in terms of commitments to Indigenous knowledges and worldviews for those of us in colonial and post-colonial contexts.

The topic of what interviews measure has received a great deal of attention over the years. One line of research has investigated the relationship between interviews and the construct of cognitive ability. A previous meta-analysis reported an overall corrected correlation of .40 ( Huffcutt, Roth, & McDaniel, 1996 ). A more recent meta-analysis reported a noticeably lower corrected correlation of .27 ( Berry, Sackett, & Landers, 2007 ). After reviewing both meta-analyses, it appears that the two studies posed different research questions. Further, there were a number of coding judgments in Berry et al. that merit review, and there was no moderator analysis for educational versus employment interviews. As a result, we reanalyzed the work by Berry et al. and found a corrected correlation of .42 for employment interviews (.15 higher than Berry et al., a 56% increase). Further, educational interviews were associated with a corrected correlation of .21, supporting their influence as a moderator. We suggest a better estimate of the correlation between employment interviews and cognitive ability is .42, and this takes us “back to the future” in that the better overall estimate of the employment interviews – cognitive ability relationship is roughly .40. This difference has implications for what is being measured by interviews and their incremental validity.

Radiomics is a science that investigates a large number of features from medical images using data-characterisation algorithms, with the aim to analyse disease characteristics that are indistinguishable to the naked eye. Radiogenomics attempts to establish and examine the relationship between tumour genomic characteristics and their radiologic appearance. Although there is certainly a lot to learn from these relationships, one could ask the question: what is the practical significance of radiogenomic discoveries? This increasing interest in such applications inevitably raises numerous legal and ethical questions. In an environment such as the technology field, which changes quickly and unpredictably, regulations need to be timely in order to be relevant.  In this paper, issues that must be solved to make the future applications of this innovative technology safe and useful are analysed.
