Demystifying “Constructivism” Teasing Unnecessary Baggage from Useful Pedagogy

The term constructivism is commonly used in the field of education. As a solely pedagogical term, it is helpful in understanding the human learning process. Yet, the term is of en bundled together with a variety of overlooked or unconsidered philosophical assumptions that are unnecessary and of en detrimental to its pedagogical underpinnings. Many educators unwittingly adopt the concept without understanding or fully delineating what form of constructivism they embrace. This article provides a simple background to help the educator recognize the many permutations of constructivism and helps them to tease out the philosophical baggage that of en seems indelibly etched into the concept. Educators must learn to embrace the helpful pedagogy while critically determining for themselves whether to accept the attached baggage.

In recent years, self-paced learning (SPL) has attracted much attention due to its improvement to nonconvex optimization based machine learning algorithms. As a methodology introduced from human learning, SPL dynamically evaluates the learning difficulty of each sample and provides the weighted learning model against the negative effects from hard-learning samples. In this study, we proposed a cognitive driven SPL method, i.e., retrospective robust self-paced learning (R2SPL), which is inspired by the following two issues in human learning process: the misclassified samples are more impressive in upcoming learning, and the model of the follow-up learning process based on large number of samples can be used to reduce the risk of poor generalization in initial learning phase. We simultaneously estimated the degrees of learning-difficulty and misclassified in each step of SPL and proposed a framework to construct multilevel SPL for improving the robustness of the initial learning phase of SPL. The proposed method can be viewed as a multilayer model and the output of the previous layer can guide constructing robust initialization model of the next layer. The experimental results show that the R2SPL outperforms the conventional self-paced learning models in classification task.

Time limitation is a difficulty that affects everybody. So far no one has managed to extend the day or stop time, but we can reduce the unpleasantness related to this issue. One of the many objectives of the education system is to educate future generations of Poles. The aim of this study was to assess the awareness of the need for time management by students and their use of methods to improve this process. However, the results of the survey indicate that many participants of the Polish education system are dissatisfied with the level of teaching process in time management. Education significantly determines the progress of the civilization. The study presents the most popular ways of handling with time organization among the respondents, including the calendar, scheduling method, current control of the work performed and the SMART technique. The study refers to an element of the management and quality studies discipline which largely uses and develops the above mentioned methods. It presents the results of a survey carried out on 100 students. On this basis, among others, the knowledge and skills of the respondents in the field of time organization were examined, as well as their opinions on management learning process at the secondary and tertiary level. The results collected indicate the need to pay more attention to time management area of learning process as according to the respondents, the level of teaching these skills in secondary and tertiary education is low and unsatisfactory.

Power is an important dynamic in the Yoga community that influences who has access to the knowledge of Yoga and how that knowledge is shared. To create an ethic of inclusion in Yoga communities, we must consider the many ways in which people experience Hatha Yoga—especially the experiences of individuals who come from cultural backgrounds other than our own. Because it is difficult to see the ways in which cultures—our own and those of others—are seen, experienced, and responded to, it is easy to imagine that the reason that Yoga classes in the United States tend to be homogeneous is based on some inherent natural truth at work. To create space for diverse cultures in Yoga communities, we must recognize that (1) Both teachers and students bring knowledge and culture with them to the relationship, and that (2) Teachers (and institutions) should be held accountable to their perspectives, biases, and opinions about their own and others' cultural backgrounds. To create a diverse community, there must be an understanding of the human-ness of both the teacher and student, and of the inherent relationship that influences the learning process.

In this paper, we notice the fact that a human learning process is characterized by a process under a natural language environment, and discuss an approach of learning based on indirect linguistic instructions. An instruction is interpreted through some meaning elements and each trend. Fuzzy evaluation rules are constructed for the searched meaning elements of the given instruction, and the performance of a system to be learned is improved by the evaluation rules. In this paper, we propose a framework of learning based on indirect linguistic instruction based learning using fuzzy theory: FULLINS(FUzzy-Learning based on Linguistic INStruction). The validity of FULLINS is shown by applying it to two control examples: truck backer-upper control and helicopter flight control problem.

The spread of the Covid-19 virus globally continues to grow. The impact felt by Indonesia in addition to the many positive cases, economic, social and educational system problems. The learning process that has been carried out face-to-face has become undisturbed, so that the learning process changes its function to online learning. The purpose of this research is to obtain information on how to describe the implementation process of learning for students of the Pamulang University Mathematics Study Program during the Covid-19 pandemic as an effort for Higher Education to stop and break the chain of spreading covid-19. The research subjects were students of the Mathematics Study Program. Data processing was carried out by interviewing through cloud meetings and questionnaire response sheets using the google format. Interviews and questionnaire sheets were conducted with questions that were compiled and developed with related literature. Miles & Huberman's interactive analysis techniques were used in this study. This study obtained the results, namely, (1) students already have basic learning facilities such as leptops, computers, android-based mobile phones and internet networks; (2) The learning process has not been maximally carried out yet; (3) Lack of supervision from both lecturers and parents during the lecture or learning process; (4) The online learning process has the advantage of flexibility in time, encourages and trains students to study independently.

All industries need ‘competent’ staff, and pipeline standards and regulations expect all staff in the pipeline industry to be competent. This is emphasized by a North American pipeline regulator stating in its report on a failure: ...the management of training and competency is particularly critical for an organization [operating pipelines]’. Competence is a mix of skills, knowledge, and experience, and is obtained from training, mentoring, and experience. Consequently, industry knows how to develop competencies, but how can companies prove their staff are competent? Staff can attend the many training courses on offer, but how can the industry know these courses are the required quality, and that staff have acquired and absorbed the necessary skills/training? This evidence and demonstration are major problems in the pipeline industry, and need urgent solutions. Fortunately, the industry can learn from academia, who have been providing demonstrable skills for centuries. Most current industry training courses are presented by good trainers, using good materials, through good training providers. Unfortunately, most of these courses/trainers/organisers are not accredited by any reputable organisation, the materials are not quality assured, the necessary competence levels are neither specified nor defined, and there is no assessment to demonstrate understanding. This learning process may be good and delivered in good faith, but it is disorganised, unregulated, with no control or benchmarking, and no assessment. This leads to a lack of credibility. Academia has a well-established, but relatively simple system to ensure its learning process is credible. It has: courses that are assessed to a specified learning level, with clear objectives, outcomes, and qualification requirements; materials that are independently quality assured; lecturers that are qualified to teach; and, an assessment, qualification, and certification process that demonstrates the student has acquired all the stated skills. This leads to credibility. This paper assesses current training in the pipeline industry, and highlights the good points and bad points, and the deficiencies in the learning process, that prevent demonstrable competencies. It then describes how academia has a rigorous learning process that allows this demonstration. The paper ends with a ‘way forward’ for the pipeline industry, in its goal of demonstrating competency in its workforce.

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced humans to change behavior in various aspects and various fields, including education. The basic policy carried out by the government for the world of education during the Covid-19 Pandemic is the existence of a study from home policy for all levels of education. This policy changed the way educational institutions conduct the learning process, from face-to-face learning in the classroom to distance learning. Ready or not ready, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced universities that previously were not optimal in preparing and implementing online learning to carry out full implementation. Students and lecturers who previously lacked interest in carrying out online learning were required to conduct online lectures. Because the essence of lectures is a dialogue between students and lecturers or between students and students, then in the implementation of online lectures an application is needed that can guarantee the implementation of the dialogue. Of the many internet facilities for online lectures, the WhatsApp application is one of the recommended options for use in online lectures. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, this research conducted observations on the whatsapp group. While the data analysis technique of this research is descriptive qualitative. The results of this study are the whatsapp group feature is a good alternative used in the online learning process. There are so many benefits and also students become active in class even though they don't do face-to-face.

The learning process is a process control that contains a series of teacher and student implementations on the basis of reciprocal relationships that take place in educational situations to achieve certain goals. This reciprocal interaction between teachers and students is the main condition for the learning process to take place. In reality we see in schools, teachers are often too active in the learning process, while students are made passive, so that the interaction between teachers and students in the learning process is ineffective. If the learning process is dominated by teachers, the effectiveness of learning will not be achieved. To create effective learning conditions, teachers are required to be able to manage the learning process that provides stimulation to students so that they are willing and able to learn.However, learning online is not as easy as we imagine. Many students and teachers encounter obstacles due to stuttering with this online learning. Teachers who could not teach directly encountered obstacles even though the activities were carried out by means of video calls. Many school materials given to students are difficult to understand because of the many distractions when carrying out activities. The problem is generally because the subject matter is the lesson that must be exemplified face-to-face, if this is constrained because it is not direct, it is like a child is wrong and is disturbed by signals, the material also cannot be conveyed properly.
