This article describes the results of research that investigated whether student nurses identified the moral aspects of everyday nursing care situations and, if so, how they dealt with them. We intended to elucidate the role of mentoring situations in moral development. Student written documents reflecting discussions during mentoring situations were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The students studied in one of the three nursing schools involved in the research. In only a small proportion of cases (<13%) did the students identify the ethical questions in those situations. The results indicate that the nursing students rarely identified moral issues, implying that there was little conscious moral reflection and deliberation in their mentoring situations dealing with their problematic experiences during their internship. Additional competences will be required for session leaders in order to allow mentoring situations to play a more prominent role in moral development.

Introduction Knowledge on ageing has an impact on the quality of care provided to older people. Although older Ghanaians provide various forms of support to family and communities, many of them experience poor nursing care in the Ghanaian health system. There is, however, dearth of evidence regarding knowledge of ageing among Ghanaian nurses. Objective This study therefore used a descriptive survey approach to investigate knowledge of graduating undergraduate nurses on physiological, and psychosocial changes in ageing. Methods Seventy graduating undergraduate nurses were surveyed to identify their knowledge on physiological and psychosocial changes leading to care needs of older people in Ghana. Three undergraduate nursing programs with gerontological nursing courses were purposively selected for the study. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data in order to present quantitative descriptions of variables in this study. Results The response rate in the study was 42%. Findings of the study show graduating undergraduate nursing students have inadequate knowledge on ageing. Several gaps in knowledge regarding ageing were identified. Although undergraduate nursing schools had gerontological nursing courses in their programs, over 90% of participating graduating nursing students indicated pain, anxiety and depression are normal aspects in the ageing process. Conclusion It is imperative to improve the current curricula content on gerontological nursing in Ghanaian nursing schools to equip nurses with knowledge and skills needed to provide quality healthcare to older people in Ghana. Improving knowledge on ageing through evidence-informed gerontological nursing curricula content will lead to better nursing care of older Ghanaians. Providing educational opportunities for improved quality nursing care of older Ghanaians is in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 3, which aims at providing equal and quality healthcare to all age groups by 2030.

The passing of Anti-Bullying Act 10627 in Philippines triggers implementation in different schools and workplaces in the country. This is a call to intensify for the bully-free environment among affected sectors especially in academe. This study described types, sources, and frequency of bullying behaviors encountered by nursing students in their second, third and fourth year of nursing education. The descriptive cross-sectional design is utilized to assess bullying behaviors from nursing students’ perspective. Four- hundred eighty-one (481) respondents experienced at least one or more bullying behaviors from different sources. It also indicated that classmates as the most frequent source of eight out of 12 bullying behaviors, followed by faculty/clinical instructor. However, majority claimed that nothing had been done to bullying behaviors they experienced (f- 156, 15.23%), they pretended not see behavior (f- 155, 15.14%), perceived behavior as a joke (f- 153, 14.94%) and put up barriers (f-143, 13.96%), respectively. The evidence is clear; bullying poisons academic setting, and it can be carried over to practice. Thus, serious attention and management for nursing schools have to strengthen policies/guidelines to bullying prevention. Caring, safe, bullying free environment and collaborative efforts of zero tolerance to bullying has to be established for student nurses in academe.   Keywords - Social Science, bullying behaviors, nursing students, cross- sectional, descriptive design, Philippines, Asia

This study describes the level of moral sensitivity among nursing students enrolled in a traditional baccalaureate nursing program and a master’s nursing program. Survey responses to the Modified Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire for Student Nurses from 250 junior, senior, and graduate students from one nursing school were analyzed. It was not possible to draw conclusions based on the tool. Moral category analysis showed students ranked the category structuring moral meaning highest and interpersonal orientation second. The moral issue ranking highest was honesty, respect for the patient second, and third was responsibility to know the patient’s situation. Seniors agreed more often about the need to focus on patient safety. As students progress through the baccalaureate program and into the graduate program, their perspectives increasingly recognize the contextuality of moral issues. The results show a need to further develop a tool to measure moral sensitivity, using student understanding and perceptions of moral issues.

AbstractAim. The theory of emotional intelligence provides a framework to think about all of the non-technical skills you need in order to be a good nurse. It’s often described as the potential to feel, use, communicate, recognize, remember, describe, identify, learn from, manage, understand, and explain emotions. The aim of the study was to determine the level of total global Emotional Intelligence among undergraduate students of nursing and also to check the influence of factors (the year of study, type of completed high school education) on Emotional Intelligence.Methods. The study involved together 86 university students of nursing (average age 21.7±1.4; 96.5% females). We used the standardized questionnaire Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire – Short Form (TEIQue-SF).Results. The results show a higher level scores achieved by nursing students in all areas EI except Self-control compared to a population norm. Students who have completed non-health’s education achieved higher level scores of Emotionality (p ≤ 0.05).Conclusions. EI abilities are essential for the profession of nursing in both educational and clinical practice. Examination of the role of education and the development of EI abilities in student nurses are needed to support this foundation of EI research.
