African Students’ Satisfaction in China: From the Perspectives of China-Africa Educational Cooperation

The number of African students in China has significantly increased in the last two decades. This trend is closely related to China's engagement with Africa in all aspects and insufficient provision of higher education in many African countries. This study examines the degree to which African students are satisfied with their study and life experiences at a Chinese university through a mixed-methods approach. The findings indicate that African students are generally satisfied with their experiences and the extent to their satisfaction in teaching dimensions is higher than that in administrative dimensions. However, teacher's English proficiency, interaction between faculty and students, internship opportunities, and administration service quality have lower levels of satisfaction that could be improved. In regard to factors affecting satisfaction, African students’ Chinese language proficiency level and the length of stay in China both influence their experiences. Additionally, the study discovers that self-funded students frequently have greater financial pressure and higher expectations for their study. The conclusion presents the research implications for enhancing the quality of Chinese higher education internationalization.

Abstract In 2001, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China issued guidelines to promote the quality of higher education and to advocate the expansion of the use of English (Ministry of Education (MoE). 2001. Guanyu jiaqiang gaodeng xuexiao benke jiaoxue gongzuo tigao jiaoxue zhiliang de ruogan yijian [Guidelines for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Teaching at Higher Education Institutions]. This paper reviews empirical studies in English and Chinese on EMI in Chinese higher education published from 2001 to 2019, during the last two decades since these guidelines were released. The review contributes to the field of EMI by documenting, analysing and synthesising empirical evidence and by situating EMI studies in China in the global trends of EMI research. The review aims to give an overview of studies targeted at both global and local audiences, therefore, publications in both English and Chinese were included. To select the Chinese articles the core journals indexed by CNKI were searched, and for the English articles, we used ERIC, IBSS, SCOPUS and WOS databases. After excluding theoretically oriented studies, literature reviews and commentaries, 42 articles remained. The in-depth analysis revealed that the main topics of these studies included the student perception, implementation and educational practices, and the role of language. We conclude that in general there are insufficient empirical studies, especially about EMI teachers’ perspectives to inform policies and practices at the micro, meso and macro level. Based on the findings, directions for further research are identified and recommendations for methodological approaches for future studies are also made.

Purpose There are several types of accommodation available to students of higher education institutions, and it is the responsibility of the institutions to focus on factors that can attract and retain students to their residences. This study aims to investigate satisfaction of higher institutions students with on-campus accommodation with an emphasis on the ethnicity of the students. Design/methodology/approach Using convenience sampling method, questionnaires were administered to students of selected residences in the study area. Mean item score was used to rank identified factors, whereas mean gap and Kruskal–Wallis K-test were adopted to examine the difference in opinion of students from various ethnic groups. Findings Overall, major features that make students dissatisfied with university-owned accommodations are enforcement of rule that compels all students to move out with their belongings during each recess, the effectiveness of the lift system, the size of wardrobe and closet, laundry service in the residence, numbers of electrical sockets and window quality. Considering dwelling unit features, neighbourhood, environmental, building quality and services provided by residence management, this study reveals that there is a significant difference in the satisfaction of students of diverse ethnic groups with their accommodation. Research limitations/implications The study was limited to on-campus residences owned by higher education institutions in South Africa. However, the findings of the study can be adopted for off-campus residences, and such owned by private individuals, agencies and other bodies provided are approved by the institutions. Originality/value The findings of this study will help management of higher education institutions to improve quality of services in their residences for the satisfaction of their students. Developers, contractors and other stakeholders involved in construction of these residences will also find the findings useful in designing and construction of the facilities.

ABSTRACT In today’s competitive higher education environment in Vietnam, higher education institutions have focussed more on quality education services to improve students’ satisfaction, which is considered an important factor for attracting and retaining students and evaluating the success of these higher education institutions, as a result. This research aimed to examine Vietnamese students’ perceptions about the quality of education services offered at Hue University in Vietnam. The data were obtained from the questionnaires completed by 2933 students from four-university members of Hue University in Central Vietnam. The research results showed that the students were generally satisfied with the quality of education services provided by Hue University. In addition, students’ satisfaction at Hue University is most affected by their perceptions about access to education services and the educational environment. The study also provided several implications, for Hue University in particular and other Vietnamese higher education institutions in general, to enhance their education services to improve the level of education service quality for attracting and retaining students.

The existing competitive environment in the education sector in India has forced higher education institutes to adopt ‘students as a customer' approach in educational delivery. The extant literature supports seven dimensions of service quality namely input quality, curriculum, academic facilities, industry interaction, interaction quality, support facilities, and nonacademic processes. The objective of the study was to measure the relative effectiveness of service quality factors as perceived by the Indian students. Focus group interviews were conducted with a group of technical and management students. Stratified judgmental sampling was used for the data collection. In the current study, it was observed that the factor of program quality plays a more dominant role than the factor of quality of life in determining the service quality in institutes of higher education. It is further observed that in the sub-dimension of program quality, the factor of curriculum and academic facilities are relatively more dominant than the factor of input quality.

AbstractSince the beginning of this century the Netherlands has invested much money and energy in the early education of two-and-a-half to six-year-old children in an effort to improve the quality of this type of education. In this paper we will focus on the measures that have been taken in the city with the largest number of preschools and early childhood educators in the Netherlands: Amsterdam. Great care is taken to fulfil the conditions for a successful early childhood education. What we have analyzed is the educators’ language proficiency level, their knowledge about language targets for the four to six-year-olds, and their didactic skills. A report of the schools inspectorate indicated that in many cases these competencies left much to be desired. Measures have therefore been taken in order to improve them. In this paper the contents of these measures and their results will be reported. It will become clear that constant interaction is going on between initiatives that have started on a local scale and measures that have been approved and are implemented at a national level.

The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in higher education, in many cases, does not necessarily correspond to an organizational, sustainable and consistent initiative in all courses or undergraduate programs imparted. An associated risk is wasting the potential of ICTs to contribute to the quality of education. This is an exploratory-descriptive, mixed methods investigation at Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC) to determine the components and factors affecting a Maturity Model (MM). Participants were students, teachers, and institution officials. Results show the components of a maturity model that provides teachers with a roadmap for implementing e-learning in face-to-face, bimodal and virtual courses, advocating for a substantial contribution to the quality of education at a Costa Rican University.

In this study we are mainly interested at the level of students' satisfaction about their courses quality, well as the different strategies judged useful by students to improve higher education.302 chemistry students of different levels from the first year to the Master participated in this survey; they are between 18 and 28 years. The analysis of the results shows that student’s dissatisfaction is patent and the teachers are not interested enough to motivate their students. For this, students can engage in personal actions to improve their general culture, to expand their field of knowledge and improve their chances of employment.

Sự cạnh tranh giữa các trường đại học với nhau trong việc thu hút sinh viên đòi hỏi ban lãnh đạo các trường đại học cần lắng nghe tiếng nói của sinh viên, khảo sát sự cảm nhận của sinh viên về dịch vụ đào tạo nhà trường đang cung cấp để biết sinh viên muốn gì và cần gì. Nghiên cứu được thực hiện nhằm đánh giá thực trạng chất lượng dịch vụ đào tạo tại Khoa Quốc tế - Đại học Thái Nguyên và ảnh hưởng của nó tới sự hài lòng của sinh viên. Nghiên cứu được thực hiện thông qua khảo sát bằng bảng hỏi 220 sinh viên từ năm thứ nhất đến năm thứ tư được lựa chọn theo phương pháp ngẫu nhiên phân tích. Kết quả nghiên cứu cho thấy mức độ cảm thông, cơ sở vật chất, độ tin cậy, nhân viên và mức độ đáp ứng có ảnh hưởng tích cực đến sự hài lòng của sinh viên đến chất lượng dịch vụ đào tạo tại Khoa Quốc tế - Đại học Thái Nguyên. Dựa vào kết quả nghiên cứu, một số kiến nghị đã được đề xuất nhằm nâng cao chất lượng dịch vụ đào tạo góp phần nâng cao chất lượng đào tạo và thu hút người học trong và ngoài nước tới học tập tại Khoa Quốc tế - Đại học Thái Nguyên.
