A 13-year-old female spayed Domestic Shorthair cat presented with a history of right-sided mucopurulent nasal discharge for 18 months. Computed tomography revealed a mass within the right nasal cavity and the right frontal sinus. The animal was euthanized, and a postmortem examination was performed. On macroscopic examination, the right nasal cavity and the right frontal sinus were partially occluded by a soft whitish mass. Microscopically, the mass was composed of well-differentiated plasma cells that were immunopositive for immunoglobulin G and lambda light chains. These findings were consistent with a mature-type sinonasal plasmacytoma. In addition, there was right-sided mucopurulent rhinitis and sinusitis caused by a Pasteurella infection, which probably developed secondary to the sinonasal plasmacytoma. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report of a sinonasal plasmacytoma in a cat. The present communication shows that feline sinonasal plasmacytomas should be included in the differential diagnosis for tumors located in the upper respiratory tract of cats.

A 35-month-old female German shepherd weighing 33.2 kg was referred to our department with a 10-month history of sneezing and left nasal swelling. On clinical examination, the dog showed deformity of the left nasal plane in the absence of any cutaneous lesions or nasal discharge, and presented with nasal snoring noises during both the inspiratory and expiratory phases. The patency of nasal cavities was evaluated using the cotton swab test, and was found to be preserved only on the right side. Endoscopic, radiographic and computed tomographic examination revealed an osteoproductive lesion that distorted the nasal, maxillar and frontal bones, completely occupying the left nasal cavity and frontal sinuses, resulting in destruction of the nasal septum and invasion of the contralateral nasal cavity. Five bioptic samples of the mass were collected from the cutaneous surface using a 9G Jamshidi bone marrow bioptic instrument. Histologically, the lesion consisted of a non-encapsulated, multilobulated mass composed of dense coalescing trabeculae of well-differentiated bone, which was lined by osteogenic cells. The morphology was suggestive of nasal osteoma. Due to the large size of the mass, evidenced by computed tomography, chronic systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory treatment with carprofen was proposed instead of surgery. The description of this case is useful for veterinarians, who should consider osteoma as a possible differential diagnosis for nasal tumours.

A six-year-old, male, castrated European shorthair cat was presented due to a lifelong history of sneezing, nasal discharge, open-mouth breathing, stertor and vestibular problems. Clinical examination showed absence of airflow through the nostrils. Computed tomography of the head revealed an infiltrative soft tissue attenuating mass in the left nasal cavity, nasopharynx and the left frontal sinus. All of these locations could be successfully accessed through ventral rhinotomy and the mass was completely removed. Histological examination identified it as an inflammatory polyp. All respiratory and neurological symptoms disappeared, and two-and-a-half years after surgery, the cat was still without complaints.

ABSTRACTRhinoscleroma is a chronic granulomatous condition of the nose and other structures of the upper respiratory tract. Infection by the bacterium Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis is said to be the cause. A female patient aged 45 years, presented with a past history of trauma to the nose and swelling on her nose since last 1 year. There was nasal asymmetry and internal nasal examination showed a septal swelling protruding to the right nasal cavity with hypertrophied nasal mucosa and inferior turbinate. Open tip rhinoplasty approach was used to excise the mass, which examined pathologically revealing a rhinoscleroma, fibrotic infiltrative stage.

An 11-year-old, spayed female keeshond was presented for unilateral epistaxis and serous nasal discharge of four weeks duration. Initial nasal radiographs, rhinoscopy, and histopathology suggested severe, destructive lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis. The patient deteriorated while receiving an anti-inflammatory dose of prednisone. A computed tomographic scan of the nose demonstrated a soft-tissue density in both the right nasal cavity and frontal sinus. Samples for histopathology obtained at surgery were diagnostic for nasal aspergillosis. All clinical signs resolved with a single, noninvasive infusion of intranasal clotrimazole and a four-week course of oral itraconazole.

Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth, located between the maxillary central incisors in close relation to the nasopalatine canal. A 20-year-old man presented with right-sided nasal blockage, nasal discharge and collapsed nose without history of trauma. Imaging revealed a calcified mass in the inferior meatus extending into dilated nasopalatine canal. Endoscopic removal of the mass revealed tuberculate appearance of an incompletely developed tooth, consistent with mesiodens. Based on the history of septal cartilage collapse with right-sided mucopurulent discharge, endoscopic findings of the right inferior turbinate being adherent to the septal cartilage and the underlying mesiodens, we believe that the patient developed a septal abscess secondary to infection in nasal mucosa surrounding the mesiodens causing collapse of septal cartilage. While a tooth or tooth-like mass causing nasal passage air-flow obstruction is uncommon, we believe that this is the first reported case of mesiodens presenting with septal cartilage collapse.

Although osteogenic sarcoma occurs in the head and neck, it is almost exclusively limited to the maxilla and the mandible. Single, rare cases of this tumor in other facial bones are mentioned in foreign reports, but a discussion in the English literature has not come to our attention. The case history of a 58-year-old woman with a nonspecific frontal sinus pain and right-sided proptosis is presented. Plain radiographs of the paranasal sinuses revealed a radiopaque, calcific mass in the right frontal sinus approximately 3 × 5 cm in diameter. It was noted that the mass had an “onionskin” lamination. Laminography aided in the exact localization of the mass; further, it was noted on arteriography that the frontal sinus mass did not invade the dura. A frozen section biopsy at the time of craniotomy suggested a benign histologic lesion. However, subsequent review of permanent sections showed findings typical of an osteogenic sarcoma. The patient was treated with irradiation and in the first postoperative year has done well.

<p class="abstract">Rhinolith or nasal stone is formed by mineralization within nasal cavity. They are calcareous concretions that are formed by the deposition of salts on an intranasal foreign body. It is an uncommon disease that may present asymptomatically or cause symptoms like nasal obstruction, consecutive sinusitis with or without purulent rhinitis, post nasal discharge, epistaxis, anosmia, nasal malodour and headache. They are usually diagnosed incidentally on radiographic examinations or depending on the symptoms. In this paper we report a 28-year-old woman admitted in the ENT department of GGS Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot with a calcified mass in the right nasal cavity causing long standing unilateral nasal obstruction for 3 years, rhinorrhoea (usually malodourous foetid), post nasal discharge and headache for 1 year. The calcified mass was thought to contain the air cell and removed by endonasal approach. The aim of this study is to report a case of rhinolith with chronic maxillary sinusitis along with a review of literature.</p>

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a salivary gland tumor that may rarely occur in the nasal cavity. It can be a clinical diagnostic dilemma in many instances due to many possible differential diagnoses. We report the case of a 26-year-old female who presented with a 3-year history of a right nasal growth associated with ipsilateral nasal blockage, nasal pain, and rhinorrhea. Radiological image showed a mild enhancing lesion in the right nasal cavity. The patient underwent a lateral rhinotomy with wide excision of the mass. Histopathological exam was consistent with PA. Nasal PA is a rare entity and should be suspected as a diagnosis for intranasal tumors.

ABSTRACT Objective To highlight an interesting and a rare case of two rhinoliths in a single nasal cavity of an elderly male patient, mimicking fungal sinusitis or malignancy. To emphasize that rhinolith has to be considered in the differential diagnosis of unilateral nasal mass even in the elderly. Case report A 55-year-old man presented with a right-sided nasal obstruction, foul-smelling nasal discharge and a mass in the right nasal cavity of 6 months duration. Endoscopic examination revealed a gritty, blackish brown mass filling the entire right nasal cavity. A clinical differential diagnosis of malignancy or fungal sinusitis was made. CT scan of paranasal sinus was suggestive of fungal sinusitis following which patient was posted for biopsy. Intraoperatively, patient was found to have two separate masses in the right nasal cavity which were removed. We found a septal perforation adjoining the area where the rhinolith was impacted, with septum pushed laterally and adherent to middle turbinate. However, there were no features suggestive of malignancy. Histopathological examination also ruled out malignancy and confirmed a vegetable foreign body with calcification around an acellular material. Conclusion Rhinolith, though rare should be considered in the differential diagnosis of unilateral nasal mass in the elderly. AbstractSinonasal malignant melanoma is rare and usually occurs in the nasal cavity. Presentation is often varied and occurs late in the natural history of the disease, resulting in a poor prognosis. A case is reported of a patient with malignant melanoma arising from the frontal sinus who presented with a forehead swelling and progressive confusion. A review of the literature on malignant melanoma in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses regarding its presentation, site of origin and principles of management is discussed.
