Recognizing careworkers’ contributions to improving the social determinants of health: A call for supporting healthy carework

Workers engaged in reproductive labor—the caring work that maintains society and supports its growth—contribute to societal health while also enduring the harms of precarious labor and substantial work stress. How can we conceptualize the effects of reproductive labor on workers and society simultaneously? In this commentary, we analyze four types of more relational and less relational careworkers—homeless shelter workers, school food workers, home care aides, and household cleaners—during the COVID-19 pandemic. We then make a case for a new model of societal health that recognizes the contributions of careworkers and healthy carework. Our model includes multi-sectoral social policies supporting both worker health and societal health and acknowledges several dimensions of work stress for careworkers that have received insufficient attention. Ultimately, we argue that the effects of reproductive labor on workers and society must be considered jointly, a recognition that offers an urgent vision for repairing and advancing societal health.

Home care aides are a rapidly growing, non-standard workforce who face numerous health risks and stressors on the job. While research shows that aides receive limited support from their agency employers, few studies have explored the wider range of support that aides use when navigating work stress and considered the implications of these arrangements. To investigate this question, we conducted 47 in-depth interviews with 29 home care aides in New York City, focused specifically on aides’ use of support after client death. Theories of work stress, the social ecological framework, and feminist theories of care informed our research. Our analysis demonstrates aides’ extensive reliance on personal sources of support and explores the challenges this can create in their lives and work, and, potentially, for their communities. We also document aides’ efforts to cultivate support stemming from their home-based work environments. Home care aides’ work stress thus emerges as both an occupational health and a community health issue. While employers should carry responsibility for preventing and mitigating work stress, moving toward health equity for marginalized careworkers requires investing in policy-level and community-level supports to bolster employer efforts, particularly as the home care industry becomes increasingly fragmented and non-standard.

<span><em>This study aims to explain the influence of the Social Security </em><span><em>program on performance and job satisfaction and job stress as a mediating </em><span><em>variable. In addition, this study also describes the effect of job satisfaction on </em><span><em>the performance and the effect of work stress on performance. The relationship of </em><span><em>each variable in this research is to be measured by conducting a survey on 145 </em><span><em>employees of private companies that included in Social Security program on </em><span><em>DIY and Solo. Then the path analisys used to test the effect of social security </em><span><em>program performance in mediation by job satisfaction, performance and job stress</em><span><em>, job satisfaction, and examines the effect on the performance and the effect of </em><span><em>work stress on performance. The results showed that the social security program </em><span><em>significant positively affects job satisfaction and performance. Job satisfaction was </em><span><em>also positively and significantly affect performance. Even though mediating role </em><span><em>of job satisfaction in the relationship between social security program performance </em><span><em>partial. Because merely direct relationship between social security program with </em><span><em>greater performance than the mediating role of job satisfaction. Social Security </em><span><em>program did not significantly affect the stress of work, as well as job stress did </em><span><em>not significantly affect performance. Therefore, the mediating role of work stress </em><span><em>on the relationship between social security program with the performance did not </em><span><em>occur. Ergonomics applies a set of ambitious frameworks and robust body of evidence for integrating different practices to optimize worker health and well-being. One recognized framework is the participatory approach, which delves into sociotechnical workplace actions – developed from the ground up – to achieve improved human performance outcomes and acceptability across the organization. Much of what is known about the value of participatory ergonomics centers on return-on-investment analyses related to injury prevention. Outside this spectrum, little has been discussed. This paper imparts how a participatory approach can lead to various positive impacts beyond financial gains, mainly by focusing on continuous improvements at the management systems level and on proactively motivating people and organizations to embrace healthy working conditions and behaviors. Issues such as the social-ethical value of involving workers in work design and return-to-work solutions are discussed to illustrate the holistic value of participatory ergonomics in the context of Total Worker Health.

Empathy, one of the most studied and most multidisciplinary theoretical constructs, has garnered the attention of scholars from psychology as well as the social and biological sciences. The scholarship of empathy has developed significantly in the past century, with the most notable knowledge emerging in the areas of the neuroscience of empathy and the interplay between race/culture and empathy in recent decades. The positive psychology of empathy also continues to occupy researchers, as the links between empathy and individual and societal health abound. Future empathy research by socially and scholastically responsible scientists must overcome a long history of Euro-ethnocentric biases and integrate social justice into the understanding of this important construct. The scholarship and application of empathy will continue to be an important source of positivity for humans and for society as a whole.

The role of Peru in the international division of labor is the structural condition for the persistence of labor precariousness in the country. At a more concrete level, labor precariousness is an expression of the economic and business structure of the country. An economic structure heavily dependent on the non-tradable sectors and a business structure dominated by micro business undertakings do not permit the eradication of precarious labor conditions as economic growth hinges on economic progress abroad and precariousness is the source of profit of micro companies. Labor precariousness is not an automatic consequence of Peru’s role in the globalized capitalist world, but rather the social and economic consequence of the neoliberal policies implemented in the 1990s and, in particular, the current neoliberal development model in place.

Este estudo busca desvelar as questões que representam os principais entraves referentes aos transtornos mentais relacionados ao trabalho (TMRT). Foram analisados os resultados de uma revisão sobre a vigilância em saúde mental e trabalho, de 2017, e se comparou com os resultados da segunda oficina de saúde mental e trabalho (SM&T), no X Congresso de Epidemiologia, do mesmo ano. No artigo, são pontuadas quatro vertentes para o entendimento sobre a SM&T: os dados epidemiológicos; as políticas vigentes de enfrentamento do problema; o entendimento da a centralidade da organização do trabalho; e as estratégias de ação e intervenção nos ambientes de trabalho, ou a ausência destas, principal nó crítico do fenômeno estudado. Na oficina, constatou-se que as ações em SM&T, realizadas pelos profissionais da rede, são incipientes e de pouca visibilidade; as ações dos centros de referência na área são, em sua maioria, ações de educação em saúde. Este estudo contribui com uma crítica embasada nas ciências sociais, revelando possibilidades e estratégias para o enfrentamento de tais dificuldades, uma vez que o contexto de enfrentamento dos agravos à saúde mental relacionados ao trabalho se mostra um desafio singular para o campo da saúde do trabalhador.Abstractthis study aims to uncover the issues that represent the main obstacles regarding work-related mental disorders (tMrt). We analyzed the results of a review on mental health and work surveillance in 2017 and compared it with the results of the second workshop on mental health and work (SM&t) at the X Congress of Epidemiology in that same year. in this article four topics are scored for the understanding of SM&T: the epidemiological data; the current policies for coping with the problem; the understanding of the centrality of work organization; and the strategies of action and intervention in the work environments, or the absence of these, main critical node of the studied phenomenon. In the workshop, it was verified that the SM&T actions carried out by network professionals are incipient and of little visibility; the actions of the centers of reference in the area are, for the most part, health education actions. This study contributes with a critique based on the social sciences, revealing possibilities and strategies for coping with such difficulties, since the context of dealing with work-related mental health problems is a unique challenge for the field of the worker health.

This research aims to examine and analyze the impact of work stress on job satisfaction with social support as a moderating variable. This research method is quantitative, using Simple Random Sampling for its sampling technique. There were 60 employees as samples”the data collected by observation, interviews, and questionnaires. The statistical analysis used in this study was descriptive analysis and data analysis by utilizing Partial Least Square (PLS) with SmartPLS 3.0 as the tool and Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) software. The result shows that work stress has a negative and significant influence on job satisfaction. Work stress will result in a decrease in job satisfaction felt by employees. As well as social support did not moderate the relationship between work stress and job satisfaction. Social support does not decrease the impact of work stress on job satisfaction that occur within the company. The company should manage the work stress level to fulfil workers' job satisfaction and avert adverse effects to the company's activities.

The objective of this research was to explore the life-world of migrant women health care-aides, focusing on their on their own subjective understandings of caregiving and the market for care in Canada. Qualitative interviews ranging in length from one to three hours produced snapshots of the social and cultural fractures endemic to the migration and settlement process. I argue that women's caregiving practice is an aspect of an ethics of care that allows for moments of empowerment and resistance to an oppressive social context shaped by a matrix of race, class and gender hierarchies.
