Approaching genres as knowledge structures provides a useful theoretical basis for teaching students to communicate across cultures. The approach is based on the concept of schemata (Rumelhart, 1980; Cook, 1994) and on Swales's (1990) techniques for genre analysis. It is divided into four interrelated teaching stages: background information, communicative purposes, text structure, and the implica tions of genre comparisons. Among the four stages, teaching the communicative purposes is the most important. This approach has been used effectively to teach students how to write sales letters in English and Chinese.

In the context of recent studies on writing to learn, concept maps are constructed in an attempt to make knowledge structures and conceptual change explicit. These graphic representations are based on the concepts and semantic relations in a student's text. However, a concept map does not give insight into the rhetorical text structure and other rhetorical features, nor does it show the way concepts are located and connected in this structure. Since the dialectic between content knowledge and rhetorical knowledge is essential in the process of 'knowledge transforming', and consequently conceptual change, an analysis tool that integrates both analysis of rhetorical text structure and of semantic structures in text is needed. In a pilot study of a forthcoming research project about writing to learn in the content areas in primary education, an instrument was designed for integrated text analysis and graphic representation. The analysis and representations were demonstrated with data collected from ll-to-12 year old students, who wrote an explanatory text for younger students about a climate issue. Revision was triggered by asking the student whether he expected a younger pupil to understand the written explanation. An analysis and graphic representations of two texts written by two different students focused on location and use of concepts, expansions of meaning of these concepts, and connections between concepts through coherence relations, all embedded in the rhetorical text structure. It was concluded that the analysis tool proposed here makes it possible to compare students' knowledge structures and accordingly can provide insight into conceptual changes, relative to writing.

The paper introduces the experience of organizing the lesson of «Russian traditional festivals» by applying the model of «flipped classroom». The lesson is conducted within the framework of the course «Russian studies», which is offered for Chinese students of nonlinguistic majors at Xiamen University. We analyze the origin, theoretical basis and research status of «flipped classroom» model, as well as the feasibility of implementing the «flipped classroom» model. The author describes the design, objectives and tasks and the importance of the course «Russian studies» under the background of good Sino-Russian relations. Basically our lesson includes three stages. At the end of the semester, we talked respectively with students to find out their impressions. We note that students, who are self-disciplined and self-motivated in learning, prefer this model. From the teaching practice, we draw the following conclusions as follows. First, the «flipped classroom» model is more suitable for self-disciplined and self-motivated students. Second, when implementing this model, teachers should take more care of backward students. Third, this model does give students more motivation, enhance their analytical ability and cross-cultural ability, and promote autonomous learning and deep learning. At last, we should continue to use this model in teaching «Russian studies» and similar courses in universities.

To investigate the generic features of firm-generated advertisements (FGAs) in cross-cultural contexts, this study analyzed 327 FGAs by Dell Technologies and the Lenovo Group on Twitter and Sina Weibo. Integrating affordances and multimodality into genre analysis, the study showed that the FGAs were characterized by (a) flexible move structure, (b) persuasive language, (c) visual illustration, and (d) hyperlinks, hashtagging (#), and mentioning (@) functions. The FGAs on Sina Weibo, compared with those on Twitter, tended to use more language play, emojis, and contextual product pictures and show more emphasis on the niche of products, incentives, and celebrity endorsement.

AbstractAlthough conversation analysis (CA) has been widely employed in different languages, its application to Greek talk-in-interaction is still quite limited. For this reason, in our introduction we summarise briefly the foundations of CA and present international and Greek CA bibliography on different areas of analysis in a manner that will be accessible to conversation analysts of various interests but also to researchers who are new to the field. We begin by outlining the foundations of CA and then offer a brief background to its development and its relationship to other disciplines. The empirical basis of CA is stressed by focussing on the process of collecting and transcribing data for CA and the method and units of analysis. We also give background information on the main CA areas of analysis (grammar-and-interaction, prosody, narrative analysis, institutional interaction, feminist CA, membership categorisation analysis, multimodal interaction). Finally, we present a brief overview of past studies of Greek talk-in-interaction and conclude with a summary of the articles of the Special Issue. By placing the emphasis on the fine-grained, turn-by-turn analysis, its ethnomethodological underpinnings and the understanding of social action, our aim is to set the tone for this Special Issue and to encourage future study of Greek conversational data and cross-cultural comparisons.

This study examines the generic components of Arabic wedding invitation cards issued during the Covid-19 period in Jordanian society. It aims to find out the role played by the Covid-19 pandemic in shaping the rhetorical structure (moves and steps) of these cards. The sample consists of 100 electronic wedding cards which were analyzed using top-down (genre analysis approach) and bottom-up processing. The analysis shows that there are nine component moves realized by certain steps, shaping the invitation genre. It is found that this genre is subject to change which essentially affects its common main communicative purpose, viz. to invite people to celebrate the wedding in a place. It is hoped that the results of this study may confirm previous literature about the effects of the surrounding context on shaping a genre, help familiarize those interested in knowing about this Arabic genre and offer insights for those interested in conducting cross-cultural contrast.

This research focuses on two review texts published in a teenage magazine called <em>Teen Ink</em>. It is aimed to discover the language style and text structure used by the same text producer. Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach, this research describes the register and genre employed in the two analyzed texts. The analysis was done by examining and comparing the generic structure and the metafunctions of each text. The description of data led to the interpretation of field, tenor, and mode. From the genre analysis, it can be seen that the text producer follows the same text structure for both texts, though differences were found in the technique used to compose each stage of the text. In terms of register, different dominant transitivity and circumstance types were found in both texts. Meanwhile, the text producer puts all participants surrounding the texts in equal position, and positive assessment is implied in both texts. In addition, as the texts are written in a language style that tends to be spoken, the texts are considered appropriate for the medium, namely the review column of <em>Teen Ink</em> magazine.

AbstractConference abstracts are under-represented promotional texts in spite of their key role in the academic life of and communication among scholars. This generic study attempts to capture the structures and strategies of 160 applied linguistics conference abstracts from four world areas in terms of semantic units of Introduction, Method, and Findings and their Moves and Steps. Results revealed similarities and differences arising mainly from the idiosyncratic nature of genre, place of presentation, and western versus non-western, center versus periphery, and theory- versus application-oriented cultures. Implications for novice and non-native researchers to communicate and submit conference abstracts effectively follow a detailed report.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore different tagging behaviours between Chinese and Americans by analysing the movie tags, and explore the feasibility of applying cultural differences to tag recommendations. Design/methodology/approach This paper introduced hypotheses based on several well-established psychological theories and tested them with social tags for the same movies generated by Chinese and Americans. And to prove the utility of the cultural factor consideration, this paper conducted a cross-cultural tag recommendation experiment. Findings The results show that compared with Americans, Chinese users tend to add more tags about movies’ background information (e.g. release year) and global contextual characteristics (e.g. genre); they also prefer to add tags about production countries and factual tags, and cultural factors can be applied for recommending more accurate tags. Research limitations/implications Other reasons for tagging differences beyond cultural factors have not be explored. Tags for some sample movies in MovieLens might be unstable, as they had been tagged by a small scale of users; as a result, the tags’ type distribution might be influenced. Practical implications The results and conclusion of this study will be beneficial for the cross-cultural applications of social tags and mining users’ interests based on tags. Originality/value This paper provided a deeper investigation of the cross-cultural effect in people’s social tagging behaviours from cognitive perspective, and an empirical analysis has been performed to explore proper approaches of incorporating cultural differences for tag recommendation.
