Format adaptation plays an increasingly important part in international television. Formats such as Dancing with the Stars and Idol are screened in many territories. The article presents an in-depth case study of how this relatively new and highly internationalised production and business model influences local television markets and leads to changes according to local competitive, financial, cultural and political conditions. It explores the impact of format adaptation on Danish and Australian prime-time schedules between 1995 and 2004/05, and its effect on local content and genres among the main broadcasters. Various media systemic explanations for these trends, differences and similarities are investigated.

This extended abstract discusses local content opportunities in economic development for the Aboriginal community. Local content requirements have become a strategic community development consideration during the past few years. This abstract links the topics of local content commitments and indigenous economic development via leveraging relationships with indigenous contractors in Australia. The creation of indigenous businesses that strive to succeed in the market and compete with non-indigenous companies is key in developing sustainable working opportunities for indigenous Australians. Many oil and gas players have publicly committed to contribute to indigenous business participation offering contractual opportunities and designing capacity-building programs and initiatives. The market for indigenous contractors services is, therefore, rapidly growing and presents considerable opportunities for existing and new players providing services to the resources industry in Australia. The specific demand is driven by corporate social responsibility policies and by the limited capacity of suppliers to deliver what is required by large new and expansion projects in the resource (both mining/oil and gas) sectors in Australia to maintain their social licence to operate. We present the results of a survey about policies and practices of some of the leading oil and gas operators in Australia, highlighting best practices in indigenous business engagement. We also analyse (from interviews with indigenous enterprises) barriers and issues encountered so far in indigenous contracting. International examples about the impact that indigenous enterprises can have on local community social and economic development complement the survey. Note: the term indigenous as used in this extended abstract refers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Like most of the developing countries, India also has a large number of off-the-grid villages. In spite of government's efforts at rural electrification, many villages cannot hope for grid power in the near future because the cost of setting up the distribution infrastructure. But when these villages come on grid, they place an additional demand on the distribution network and most states are already facing several hours of power cuts because conventional electricity is scarce. Thus these villages remain un-electrified for the simple reason that electricity is not available. This case study deals with the innovative business model of the company “Mera Gao Power” which sets up “Solar Micro Grids” in villages. It further analyses the impact of Solar Power on the socio-economic parameters of the villages where the project has been implemented. Further it discusses the various challenges faced by MGP in sustaining and expanding this business model.

PurposeThis paper aims to analyze how a real estate business model innovation developed in a real estate network, with a special focus on the relationship between ego network structure and the innovative development of the business model. Design/methodology/approachThe paper is a single case study of a Swedish real estate network of 38 actors. The data were collected at the individual actor level using multiple sources: 12 semi-structured in-depth interviews, 94 min of meetings and 28 written contracts. The empirical findings resulted in four propositions. FindingsThis study demonstrates that it was primarily the building user who was behind the innovative development of the real estate business model innovation, whereas the real estate company acted as a network hub and network resource coordinator. The ego network structures significantly affected the outcome. Practical implicationsReal estate companies should act as hubs, coordinating all the network actor resources the building user needs in the value-creation process. To be effective hubs, the representatives of real estate companies must create extensive personal and open ego networks to acquire central network positions. Originality/valueFew studies examine business model innovation, particularly in the real estate context. Though large real estate businesses usually operate in the networks of various actors, analyses based on the network perspective are also lacking. This case study builds a valuable understanding of how network processes in real estate networks can be used as tools to foster real estate business model innovation, which in turn can lead to more competitive real estate companies and building users.

This paper aims to empirically identify the key factors that drive effective innovative business models in the creative industries. There have been various approaches of analyzing the impact and importance of the creative industries but few appears to address the importance of major stakeholders driving innovation potential in this arena. A case study of the Moon Lantern Festival event held in Adelaide South Australia, where it is part of the OzAsia Festival has been adopted in this paper to underline the analyses of this study. Using a systems approach and stakeholder theory this research aims to develop a model that evaluates innovative business practices in major public Performing Arts Festivals. From the case study and its stakeholder analysis a new business model framework is proposed with a focus on organisational culture, idea generation, relationships and collaborations, team work and resource sharing.

This chapter will discuss the concept, nature and implications of free web content; with a focus on the problems caused by the rise of this phenomenon in the recent and rapidly flourishing digital age. A pricing strategy will also be proposed as part of our solution to regulate the use of free web content. As part of the proposed recommendation, a case study on Singapore Press Holdings has been conducted to assess to a certain extent, the impact of free web content on a traditional business model. This will determine if the organization is making correct judgment calls, media changes and business decisions, which helps to assimilate the new digital model, and hence, establish a possible guideline to the correct method in which businesses should be heading towards in order to succeed in this digital age.
