How are civic cultures achieved through youth social-change-oriented vlogging? A multimodal case study

Debate over conceptual definitions is prominent within the body of literature dealing with emerging patterns of civic engagement and political participation among youth information and communication technology–enabled politics. This article contends that advancing new knowledge in this field is also dependent upon fine-grained empirical analysis of digital traces of youth participation. Drawing on a close analysis of two youth-produced vlogs, we show that adolescents’ commitment to social change can be creatively achieved through video making. Informed by a socio-semiotic approach to multimodal analysis and by Peter Dahlgren’s concept of online civic cultures, our qualitative analysis highlights two main patterns we found in young people’s vlogs aimed at raising awareness about social issues. First, we found that to impact their intended audiences, vloggers presented themselves as creative choice makers and as savvy insiders of youth civic cultures on YouTube. Second, we found that vloggers successfully managed the risk of being the target of online hostility using rhetorical devices and tactics that smoothed counterpositions. Overall, our multimodal case study shows that contrary to traditional approaches to successful communication based on textual coherence, a mix of consistency, disruption, and contradiction can be used purposefully in public speech in order to manage difficult, risky topics. As we demonstrate that visual-based communication on social network sites such as vlogs posted on YouTube is not neat and tidy, we illuminate the vloggers’ shifting identities, opinions, and concerns. This evidence-based observation calls for more in-depth small case qualitative analyses for investigating the multiple affordances of civic talk online and its democratic potential. This article contributes to the ongoing conceptual redefinition of youth civic engagement and political participation in the face of fast-evolving sociotechnical change.

AbstractThis article addresses the call of the Psychology of Global Crises conference for linkage of academic work with social issues in three parts: First, examples from conference participants with their mix of bold calls for social transformation and realization of limits, a combination that generated few clear paths to achieving them. Second, presentation of Jamesian practical idealism with psychological insights for moving past impediments blocking implementation of ideals. And third, a case study of impacts from the most recent prominent crisis, the global pandemic of 2020, which threatens to exacerbate the many crises that had already been plaguing recent history. The tentacles of COVID’s impact into so many problems, starting with economic impacts from virus spread, present an opportunity to rethink the hope for constant economic growth, often expressed as the American Dream, an outlook that has driven so many of the problems surging toward crises. Jamesian awareness of the construction of ideological differences and encouragement of listening to those in disagreement provide not political solutions, but psychological preludes toward improvements in the face of crises.

This chapter examines youth civic engagement in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region. It first considers the context of young people's civic engagement in Brazil, citing how a series of events in the country's recent history aroused unprecedented levels of political participation. It then considers the demographics of youth activists in Rio, the activities and organizations they are involved in, and their motivations for engagement. It also discusses issues important to youth activists, along with their responsibilities, social awareness, and political ideas; what they perceive as costs to civic engagement, including the fear of violence and the time that activism takes up; and their various other concerns such as the poor state of education in the country and the rights of political participation. The chapter concludes with an assessment of Rio youth's views on responsibility.

While the internet has been examined as a utilitarian space for social movements, it also acts as a cultural space for personal and community expression about important social issues. While examining the particularities of the memetic form – often catchy humor, simple imagery, and remixing – the author examines meme culture as a vehicle for political and social critique in the context of China’s stringent web censorship and propaganda. She looks at social change memes that have arisen around internet censorship and in support of the blind lawyer activist Chen Guangcheng. First, she considers these memes as visual and creative practices that sidestep the mechanics of internet censorship in China. She then argues for the role of internet memes in challenging hegemonic media environments, and maintains that these actions should be considered important political acts in and of themselves.

In this article, Dafney Blanca Dabach investigates how teachers and their students of different citizenship statuses navigate tensions in formal state-sponsored citizenship education. In traditional US high school civics courses, undocumented immigrant youths' liminal status is often invisible and overlooked as undocumented youth are educated alongside their peers who have full citizenship rights. Disjunctures between idealized rights and structural exclusions become barriers to meaningful civic education. Through this qualitative case study, Dabach examines the possibilities of a teacher's brokering role across different forms of knowledge and experience in a classroom that included undocumented immigrants, naturalized immigrants, and US-born students whose parental origins spanned twelve countries across five continents. She asks: How do civics teachers who are aware of their students' varied citizenship statuses discuss political participation in mixed-status classrooms during nationally focused events, such as elections? And, how do students of differing citizenship statuses respond during such times? Dabach demonstrates how the teacher apprenticed youth into practices of political participation while recounting narratives about the impact of immigration deportation policies at the local school site. In doing so, the teacher breached norms of silence, interrupting norms that contribute to maintaining status quo exclusions. This case study documents how the teacher simultaneously socialized youth of different citizenship statuses in ways that they found meaningful—across citizenship types. This work contributes to conceptualizing how civic education may be more inclusive in the face of systematic exclusions.

Hemiplegia is the commonest manifestation of a Stroke with neurological deficit affecting the face, limbs and trunk on one side or either side of the body. Stroke is one of the leading causes of death and disability in India. The aggravated Vata paralyze one side of the body either right or left , leads to immobility is called as Pakshaghata. The present case study deals with a 63years old male patient with chief complaints weakness in left half of the body and was unable to walk. He was a diagnosed case of Haemorrhagic Stroke presenting with Left Sided Hemiplegia with Acute Intraparenchymal Haemorrhage in C.T. brain. The Ayurvedic diagnosis of  Pakshaghata was made and managed with treatment principle which is mentioned by Acharya Charaka. Snehana, Swedana and Mridu Virechana along with  Panchakarma procedures Shirodhara, Shiropichu and Basti for 21 days. Samshamana Aushadhis(Oral medicines) and Physiotherapy were adopted at various stages of the diseases. Maximum improvement was noticed in upper and lower extremity functions at the end of the treatment. Patient showed remarkable recovery in Speech ability and Mobility. Panchakarma is a minimal invasive Bio-Cleansing procedure which can be adopted in life style, metabolic, autoimmune diseases and also periodic healthy individual as preventive measures.

The mainstream discourse focuses on predictive algorithms of probability as a measure of responsibility and culpability for digitally mediated activism. Bodies that threaten to disrupt the seamlessness of events are seen as problematic. The expected response is to contain this overflow into physical spaces and to restrict their excesses to the online platforms. This essay argues that this separation of zones of affective excess signals a shift in how we understand the body, publicness and punishment in the face of ubiquitous digitality. It confronts this ‘cleansing’ acts of algorithmic regulation with a case study of the #KissOfLove campaign from India to show how the expected tropes that deal with concerns of safety of the body, the separation and weaving together of the digital and physical spaces, and the affordances provided by regulation and policy often unquestioningly mark bodies and spaces as overflowing and hence in need of curation, containment and cleansing. Building upon the narratives of technologised nation building in India, it complicates the terrain of the overflow, showing that a ‘technoaffective’ framework might lead to unpacking the ways in which selected bodies are rendered culpable and are forced to bear the marks of punishment in an emerging technosocial landscape.
