Ritual act, technology, and the efficacy of traditional tattooing among the Igorots of north Luzon, Philippines

What are the social dimensions involved in the technology of traditional tattooing among the Igorots of north Luzon, the Philippines? Based on a long-term anthropological fieldwork among the Igorots, an examination of the varying traditional tattooing practices of these ethnic groups demonstrates that the significance of batok (traditional tattoos) does not only lie in their symbolic and aesthetic qualities, but also in the rituals performed, the taboos observed, and the technology employed in the production of tattoos. The tattoo's appearance on skin is also dependent on the method or technique employed in the production of designs; the varying pigments used to produce a blackish, greenish, or bluish color in tattoos that mark the identity of a group; and the symmetry and arrangement of tattoos. More importantly, this paper explores the social and cultural practices involved in the production of batok for these to achieve the efficacy of purpose and function . This paper examines how the technology of tattoos, along with rituals and their associated taboos, contributes to the production of what is classified among the Butbut of Kalinga as: whayyu or maphod (“beautiful”), rather than lagwing (“unpleasant”); unfinished versus finished; and “thin or thick” tattoos. Traditional tattooing was formerly practiced in the confines of collective and place-based rituals among the people of the Philippine Cordillera. However, the rarity, rawness, and the particularity of the technology used in the production of these tattoos render them more “authentic,” as such, traditional tattooing has entered contemporary tattoo practices in the Philippines as a form of revival.

This article is part of the special cluster titled Bukovina and Bukovinians after the Second World War: (Re)shaping and (re)thinking a region after genocide and ‘ethnic unmixing’, guest edited by Gaëlle Fisher and Maren Röger. This article explores ways in which Habsburg nostalgia has become an important factor in contemporary place-making strategies in the city of Chernivtsi, Western Ukraine. Through the analysis of diasporic homecomings, city center revitalization, and nationalist rhetoric surrounding the politics of monuments, I explore hybrid and diverse ways in which Habsburg nostalgia operates in a given setting. Rather than a static and homogenous form of place attachment, in Chernivtsi different cultural practices associated with Habsburg nostalgia coexist with each other and depending on the political context as well as the social position of the “nostalgic agents” manifest themselves differently. Drawing from my long-term ethnographic fieldwork, I argue that in order to fully understand individuals’ attachment to space, it is necessary to grasp both the subtle emotional ways in which the city is experienced by individuals as well as problematize the role of the built environment in the visualization of collective memory and emotions of particular groups. The focus on changing manifestations of the Habsburg nostalgia can bring then a better understanding of the range and scope of the city’s symbolic resources that might be mobilized for various purposes.

Resumo: Com a preocupação de as empresas se manterem no mercado em longo prazo, passou a ser adotada por algumas organizações uma estratégia voltada à adesão a práticas sustentáveis. Com isso, o profissional contábil pode gerar ou gerenciar informações que auxiliarão no processo de resultados voltados à sustentabilidade. Assim, nesta pesquisa buscou-se responder à seguinte questão: de que forma o profissional contábil participa dos indicadores de sustentabilidade? Diante dessa problemática, o objetivo com o trabalho foi verificar a participação do profissional contábil em aspectos associados aos indicadores de sustentabilidade em uma empresa pertencente ao setor gráfico. A sustentabilidade empresarial foi mensurada a partir do Grid de Sustentabilidade Empresarial (GSE) que integra as dimensões ambiental, econômica e social. A participação do profissional contábil foi analisada a partir de ações voltadas ao planejamento, execução, controle e tomada de decisão dos indicadores de sustentabilidade. Esta pesquisa pode ser caracterizada como descritiva, exploratória e qualitativa, adotando a estratégia de estudo de caso, e foi desenvolvida a partir da aplicação de um questionário estruturado com realização de entrevista e visita técnica com a finalidade de observar in loco as ações mencionadas. A empresa investigada apresentou um resultado classificado como Sustentabilidade Empresarial Relativa, uma vez que possui resultados positivos nas dimensões econômica e social da sustentabilidade. Observou-se, ainda, que o profissional da Contabilidade participa de 14 indicadores dos 43 definidos pelo modelo, sendo quatro da dimensão ambiental, oito da dimensão econômica e dois da dimensão social. Diante do resultado, destaca-se a participação do contador em resultados associados ao desempenho da sustentabilidade empresarial (por meio dos indicadores) na organização analisada.Palavras-chave: Contabilidade gerencial. Sustentabilidade empresarial.Characterizing the participation of the accounting professional in the context of corporate sustainabilityAbstract: With the concern of companies to remain in the market in the long term, a strategy has been adopted by some organizations aimed at adhering to sustainable practices. With this, the accounting professional can generate or manage information that will help in the process of results oriented towards sustainability. Thus, this research sought to answer the following question: How does the accounting professional participate in sustainability indicators? In view of this problem, the objective of the study was to verify the participation of the accounting professional in aspects associated to the sustainability indicators in a company belonging to the graphic sector. . Business sustainability was measured based on the Corporate Sustainability Grid (CSG) that integrates the environmental, economic and social dimensions. The participation of the accounting professional was analyzed based on actions aimed at the planning, execution, control and decision making of the sustainability indicators. This research can be characterized as descriptive, exploratory and qualitative, adopting the case study strategy, and it was developed from the application of a structured questionnaire with interviews and technical visits with the purpose of observing the mentioned actions in loco. The company investigated presented a result classified as Relative Business Sustainability, since it has positive results in the economic and social dimensions of sustainability. It was observed that the accounting professional participates in 14 indicators of the 43 defined by the model, four of the environmental dimension, eight of the economic dimension and two of the social dimension. In view of the result, the accountant's participation in results associated to the performance of corporate sustainability (through the indicators) in the analyzed organization stands out.Keywords: Management accounting. Banyuwangi is an area rich in various cultures and customs, this is because Banyuwangi district is inhabited by various ethnic groups. The majority of the sub-districts of Banyuwangi are osing tribe who live in the village of fern and urban village of rejo. Joglo building as one of the traditional Javanese buildings in it contained philosophy that suits the life of the people. The arrangement of the room in Joglo is generally divided into three parts, namely the meeting room called pendopo, the living room or the space used to hold the show called pringgitan, and the back room called dalem or omah jero as the family room. For the people of Banyuwangi especially those who still preserve the joglo house just like the osing tribe have begun to experience the shifting of its role and function where in this case joglo house serve as additional need for home decoration, private residence of the citizen, until used as permanent building of cafe and restaurant. From the description above, the researcher felt that the community did not understand the function of the role and shape of the architecture of the Javanese house which has become the culture of the inheritance slowly changed by causing a shift to the cultural values contained within it. The shift in value will sooner or later bring changes to traditional architectural forms, structures and functions.

In analyzing Russian organized crime, the authors describe and classify the four major forms of organized crime: 1) political-social, 2) mercenary, 3) in-group, and 4) syndicated. Though the first three classifications of the aforementioned types of organized crime existed throughout Soviet history, it was the syndicated form that began to emerge in the late 1950's, expanding during the corrupt Breznev years (1964–82), exploding during perestroika, and reaching pandemic levels after the demise of the Soviet Union in 1991. The abrupt transformation of the Russian society from a centralized command economy to one driven by the forces of market capitalism created the socio-pathological conditions for the malignant spread of mercenary and especially syndicated organized crime. New criminals syndicates were created by an alliance of criminal gangs/groups and former members of the Soviet Union's communist nomenklatura (bureaucracy) and the consequence was the criminalization of much of the Russian economy. The social structure of these syndicates is based on a loose association of patron-client relationships rather than a centralized hierarchical system; their function is to provide illicit goods/services desired by the people. The authors conclude their study by emphasizing that what has taken place in Russia is not peculiar to the Russian people, but exemplifies what can happen to societies that experience rapid and intense social change.

The development of health is basically an effort to increase awareness, willingness, and the ability of every person to commit a healthy life to achieve the highest level of public health. Health behavior is influenced by several factors including physical, mental, spiritual, and social. This study aims to gain clarity about the social dimensions of the health behavior of the people of Abuan Village, Kecut, Bangli. Data collection in this research using observation, interview, and document study technique. Furthermore, the technique of data analysis is through data reduction or chosen according to research purpose. In the process of data analysis carried out throughout the study or carried out continuously from the beginning to the end of the study. Through the process of systematically tracking and arranging interview transcripts, field notes, and other materials, showed that the social dimension of health behavior in the form of a) human relationship with God; b) human relationships with humans; and c) human relationships with the environment.

This study  aimed to determine the structure and social function of folklore legend naming Batunabontar Batang Natal district Mandailing Natal district. The method used in this research was descriptive method. The data source of this research was the people who inhabit Batunabontar village, Batang Natal District, Mandailing Natal District. The instrument used in this study was the researcher himself and the informant based on the understanding of the structure and social function of the naming legend of a place. Data collection techniques used in this study were observation by observation and to strengthen the data obtained, direct interviews were carried out to the authorities in research on the Social Structure and Function of the Legend of the Naming of Batunabontar Village, Batang Natal District, Mandailing Natal District. The results of this study indicate that the Social Structure and Function of Naming Legend of Batunabontar Village, Batang Natal District, Mandailing Natal District has a unique history and structure and function in the village. The uniqueness of this Batunabontar makes the writer want to know the importance of the structure and function of the Batunabontar in Batang Natal District, Mandailing Natal Regency.

AbstrakTari Gatholoco adalah tari kelompok berjenis tradisi rakyat dalam sebuah kelompok seni di Desa Kembangsari. Tari Gatholoco belum diketahui siapa penciptanya dan digarap oleh Badrun tahun 1965 kemudian digarap oleh Tono tahun 1980. Tari Gatholoco menarik karena pola lantai membentuk formasi huruf (terbalik dari arah depan) yang menyusun sebuah kata Temanggung. Juga terdapat gerak penghubung antar gerak satu ke gerak berikutnya dan gerak penghubung untuk perpindahan pola lantai dengan senggakan “sukseskan pembangunan”. Tari Gatholoco memiliki fungsi sosial dalam masyarakat Desa Kembangsari. Penelitian ini menggunakan landasan teori bentuk oleh Suzanne K. Langer dan Sri Rochana Widyastutieningrum dan teori fungsi oleh Raymond Firth. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif, merupakan metode penelitian yang menekankan pada telaah mendalam suatu fenomena yang terjadi dengan melakukan wawancara, dokumentasi, pengamatan langsung, pengamatan tidak langsung, dan studi pustaka. Presentasi yang disajikan berupa data dan visual. Hasil dari penelitian ini dapat diperoleh gambaran yang berkaitan dengan bentuk sajian dan fungsi sosial tari Gatholoco yang hingga kini masih hidup dan berkembang di kalangan masyarakat Desa Kembangsari. Bentuk sajian tari Gatholoco terdapat gerak yang menggambarkan aktivitas masyarakat sehari hari. Fungsi sosial tari Gatholoco yaitu sebagai sarana kepuasan batin, sarana bersantai dan hiburan, sarana ungkapan jati diri, sarana integratif dan pemersatu, dan sarana pendidikan amat positif di kehidupan masyarakat Desa Kembangsari.Kata kunci: Gatholoco, Bentuk, FungsiAbstractGatholoco Dance is a group dance of the folk-type tradition in an art group in Kembangsari Village. Not yet known who the creator of Gatholoco dance it was cultivated by Badrun in 1965 then tilled by Tono in 1980. Gatholoco dance is very interesting, because pattern floor as like alfabet (upside down from the front) which composes the word means like Temanggung. That dance also relational between one of the movement to the next movement, and then the relational connecting the other movement of the pattern floor it is mean that “successful development”. Gatholoco dance has a sociocultural function in the Kembangsari Village. This research uses the foundation of form theory by Suzanne K. Langer and Sri Rochana Widyastutieningrum and function theory by Raymond Firth. This research uses qualitative method, is a research method that emphasizes in depth study of a phenomenon that occurs by conducting interviews, documentation, direct observation, indirect observation, and literature study. Presentation is presented in the form of data and visual. The results of this study can be obtained a picture relating to the form of course and social function of Gatholoco dance which until now is still alive and growing among the people of Kembangsari Village. There is a movement that describes the daily activities of society in the form of Gatholoco dance course. The social function of Gatholoco dance is as a mean of inner satisfaction, means of relaxation and entertainment, means of expression of identity, integrative means and unifier, means of educational, means of healing, symbolic means of meaning and power, and means of integration in chaotic times are very positive in the life of the community of Kembangsari Village.Keywords: Gatholoco, Form, Function.

Reality of paradoxical in Indonesian existence shows that the corruption achievements is improve as wll as the diversity of the people. It shows that the pattern of religious people still in the theoretical-formalistic stage. It seems the religius leader attempts to tease the religion doctrin to destroy the social structure of community life. Corruption has become a cultural and traditions that haunting destruction the character of Indonesian nation because people who have distort the authority given by the people of Indonesia. That they do corruption can the resulted crisis economical, crisis politic and also poornes, jobles and criminalty, starvation, hardness with others. Majority the people Indonesia regarded as people who are religious. This phenomenon can build character and religious morality to apply teachings of religion to eradicate corruption. This paper seeks to analyze the role and function of religion as a source of kindness and instructions in social life in order to building the character and morality of religion to eradicate corruption.

Abstract This contribution has two key objectives. First, inspired by earlier studies in comparative welfare state and in (social) gerontology, we develop a conceptualization of autonomy that is rooted in its social dimensions. This concept is then deployed to assess its policy considerations within the field of home care, both with regards to access and generosity in 21 industrialized countries. Second, this contribution performs a comparative assessment of the key factors resulting in a prioritization of the social dimensions of home care and social services in long term care. This study involves an-depth analysis of policy instruments deployed by public authorities to enhance the (social) autonomy of older adults, complemented with interviews with policy makers in diverse home care policy settings (Canada, France, South Korea, Sweden, and the United States). As such, this study features an evaluation of the presence of social elements in the definition and supply of care needs across 21 countries. It leads to the construct of a social dimensions of autonomy index based upon these instruments and the budgetary prioritization of home care within long term care policies. Among core findings, one discovers broader access and more generous funding when home care responsibilities are firmly embedded at the local level.

Social sustainability and sustainable urban developments are major challenges across the world both developed and developing countries. In general there is a conflict between the approach of sustainable development and social sustainability in the urban context. The concept of sustainability brings a key framework for extensive literature on urban design, architecture and planning. Nevertheless there is a considerable overlap between the social dimensions of sustainability and the theories or notions, for instance the ‘sustainable societies’ that are highlighted in the midst of other aspects: social equity and justice. Such society is widely expected to offer a situation for long-term social relations and activities which are sustainable, inclusive and equitable in a wider perception of the term (environmentally, socially and economically). The method adopted to address this aim involves a content analysis of available academic literature, with focus on the planning sustainable development, built environment, social sustainability, and urban planning fields. The findings demonstrate that in spite of some opposing evidence, many studies have confirmed that there has been displacement of the debate on the term of ‘sustainability’ from ‘ecological and environmental aspects into social and economic aspects’. It is related to how the community feel safe and comfortable living in their own communities, how have they felt of proud of the place where they live. The aim of the paper is to improve our understanding of current theories and practices of planning sustainable development and discuss whether the approach of sustainable development aligns with social sustainability objectives.
