In this study, we proposed a method for calculating the sonic conductance of a short-tube orifice. First, we derived a formula for calculating the sonic conductance based on a continuity equation, a momentum equation and the definition of flow-rate characteristics. The flow-rate characteristics of different orifices were then measured using the upstream constant-pressure test method in ISO 6358. Based on these test data, the theoretical formula was simplified using the least squares fitting method, the accuracy of which was verified experimentally. Finally, the effects of the diameter ratio, the length-to-diameter ratio and the critical pressure ratio were analysed with reference to engineering applications, and a simplified formula was derived. We conclude that the influence of the diameter ratio is greater than that of the length-to-diameter ratio. When the length-to-diameter ratio is <5, its effect can be neglected. The critical pressure ratio has little effect on the sonic conductance of a short-tube orifice, and it can be set to 0.5 when calculating the sonic conductance in engineering applications. The formula proposed in this study is highly accurate with a mean error of <3%.

The effect of non-condensable gas on the subcooled water critical flow in a safety valve is investigated experimentally at various subcoolings with 3 different disk lifts. To evaluate its effect on the critical pressure ratio and critical flow rate, three parameters are considered: the ratios of outlet pressure to inlet pressure, the subcooling to inlet temperature, and the gas volumetric flow to water volumetric flow are 0.15–0.23, 0.07–0.12, and 0–0.8, respectively. It turns out that the critical pressure ratio is mainly dependent on the subcooling, and its dependency on the gas fraction and the pressure drop is relatively small. When the ratio of nitrogen gas volumetric flow to water volumetric flow becomes lower than 20%, the subcooled water critical flow rate is decreased about 10% compare to the water flow rate of without non-condensable gas. However, it maintains a constant value after the ratio of gas volumetric flow to water volumetric flow becomes higher than 20%. The subcooled water critical flow correlation, which considers subcooling, disc lift, backpressure, and non-condensable gas, shows good agreement with the total present experimental data with the root mean square error 8.17%.

A method for treating nonideal gas flows through a venturi meter is described. The method is an extension of a previous study reported in an earlier paper. The method involves the determination of the expansion factor which may then be used to determine the mass flow rate through the venturi meter. The method also provides the means for determining the critical pressure ratio as well as the maximum flow rate per unit throat area. The Redlich-Kwong equation of state is used, which allows for closed form expressions for the specific heat at constant volume and the change in entropy. The Newton-Raphson method is used to determine the temperature and specific volume at the throat. It is assumed that the following items are known: the upstream temperature and pressure and the ratio of the throat pressure to the upstream pressure. Results were obtained for methane gas. These results indicate that for the cases considered, the use of the ideal gas expression for the expansion factor would lead to an error in the determination of the mass flow rate; the error increases as the throat to inlet pressure ratio decreases. For the example reported in this study, the maximum percent difference in the critical pressure ratio between the ideal and nonideal gases was 5.81 percent, while the maximum percent difference in the maximum flow rate per unit throat area was 7.62 percent.

Array of jets is an arrangement typically used to cool several gas turbine parts. Some examples of such applications can be found in the impingement cooling systems of turbine blades and vanes or in the turbine blade tip clearances control of large aeroengines. In order to correctly evaluate the impinging jet mass flow rate, the characterization of holes discharge coefficient is a compulsory activity. In a previous work the authors have performed an aerodynamic analysis of different arrays of jets for active clearance control; the aim was the definition of a correlation for the discharge coefficient (Cd) of a generic hole of the array. The developed empirical correlation expresses the Cd of each hole as a function of the ratio between the hole and the manifold mass velocity and the local value of the pressure ratio. In its original form, the correlation does not take in to account the effect of the hole length to diameter ratio (t/d) so, in the present contribution, the authors report a study with the aim of evaluating the influence of such parameter on the discharge coefficient distribution. The data were taken from a set of CFD RANS simulations, in which the behaviour of the cooling system was investigated over a wide range of fluid-dynamics conditions (Pressure-Ratio = 1.01–1.6, t/d = 0.25–3). To point out the reliability of the CFD analysis, some comparisons with experimental data were drawn. An in depth analysis of the numerical data set has led to an improved correlation with a new term function of the hole length to diameter ratio.

The steady state operational performance of gas-lubricated porous journal bearings is analyzed by using a numerical iterative method. Results are obtained, and presented in charts and tables, for the length-to-diameter ratio values of 1, 2, and 3; the eccentricity ratio values of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8; the compressibility number from 0 to 10; and several values of the feeding parameter and the supply-to-ambient pressure ratio commonly found in applications.

Microbubble generators are of considerable importance to a range of scientific fields from use in aquaculture and engineering to medical applications. This is due to the fact the amount of sea life in the water is proportional to the amount of oxygen in it. In this paper, experimental measurements and computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation are performed for three water flow rates and three with three different air flow rates. The experimental data presented in the paper are used to validate the CFD model. Then, the CFD model is used to study the effect of diverging angle and throat length/throat diameter ratio on the size of the microbubble produced by the Venturi-type microbubble generator. The experimental results showed that increasing water flow rate and reducing the air flow rate produces smaller microbubbles. The prediction from the CFD results indicated that throat length/throat diameter ratio and diffuser divergent angle have a small effect on bubble diameter distribution and average bubble diameter for the range of the throat water velocities used in this study.

Flame propagation in a closed pipe with diameter 0.1 m and 5.1 m long, as well as length to diameter ratio (L/D) of 51, was studied experimentally. Hydrogen/air, acetylene/air and methane/air with stoichiometric concentration were used to observe the trend of flame propagation throughout the pipe. Experimental work was carried out at operating condition: pressure 1 atm and temperature 273 K. Results showed that all fuels are having a consistent trend of flame propagation in one-half of the total pipe length in which the acceleration is due to the piston-like effect. Beyond the point, fuel reactivity and tulip phenomenon were considered to lead the flame being quenched and decrease the overpressures drastically. The maximum overpressure for all fuels are approximately 1.5, 7, 8.5 barg for methane, hydrogen, and acetylene indicating that acetylene explosion is more severe.

The traditional orifice discharge formula used to estimate the flow rate through a leak opening at a pipe wall often produces inaccurate results. This paper reports an original experimental study in which the influence of orifice-to-pipe diameter ratio on leakage flow rate was investigated for several internal/external flow conditions and orifice holes with different shapes. The results revealed that orifice-to-pipe diameter ratio (or pipe wall curvature) indeed influenced the leakage flow, with the discharge coefficient ( C d ) presenting a wide variation (0.60–0.85). As the orifice-to-pipe diameter ratio decreased, the values of C d systematically decreased from about 12% to 3%. Overall, the values of C d also decreased with β (ratio of pressure head differential at the orifice to wall thickness), as observed in previous studies. On the other hand, orifice shape, main pipe flow velocity, and external medium (water or air) all had a secondary effect on C d . The results obtained in the present study not only demonstrated that orifice-to-pipe diameter ratio affects the outflow, but also that real scale pipes may exhibit a relevant deviation of C d from the classical range (0.61–0.67) reported in the literature.
