The chemical composition of the essential oils, antioxidant activity (DPPH and β-carotene/linoleic acid assays) and total phenolic content (Foline-Ciocalteu) of the flowers and leaves of Salvia reuterana were determined. Essential oils extracted from the flowers and leaves by hydrodistillation were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Forty-four constituents, representing 99.7-99.9% of the oils, were identified. The major components were germacrene D, benzoic acid hexyl ester, bicyclogermacrene, β-gurjunene and ishwarene, constituting 33.7-31.9% of the oils. The highest radical-scavenging activity (DPPH test) was shown by the methanol extract of the flowers (IC50=77.6 μg/mL). In the β-carotene/linoleic acid assay, the methanol extract of the leaves showed the highest inhibition (40.3%) which was only slightly lower than that shown by BHT (82.9%). The total phenolic contents of the methanol extracts of the flowers and leaves as gallic acid equivalents were 81.4 and 88.3 μg/mg, respectively. The plant also showed good antimicrobial activity against three strains of tested microorganisms.

This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant DPPH free radical-scavenging activity, and the total phenolic and flavonoid content of ethanol and methanol extracts of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. in the whole plant and different parts, leaves, stems and flowers. The largest amounts of extract yield were obtained from the flowers, 14.14% and 12.00 % (w/w) in the ethanol of methanol extracts, respectively. The ethanol extract of leaves (16.07 ?g/ml) and methanol extract of the whole plant (21.28 ?g/ml) showed the highest activity against the DPPH radical. The ethanol extract of the leaves was the richest in phenols (222.40 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (49.81 mg QE/g), whereas the methanol extract of the whole plant contained the highest amount of phenolics (180.89 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (38.15 mg QE/g). A very strong linear correlation between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content of the extracts was established. The obtained results suggest that S. amplexicaulis could be regarded as an important source of natural antioxidants.

Verbascum L. species have been used since ancient times in traditional medicine thanks to their bioactive compounds. In this study, we evaluated the antioxidant activity and phenolic contents of ethanolic and acetonic extract of Verbascum glomeratum that collected from Denizli, Turkey. The antioxidant activity were evaluated by using various methods (β-carotene/linoleic acid, ferric reducing power assays (FRAP), radical scavenging assays of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2and#39;-azino-bis-3-ethyl benzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), phoshomolibdenum methods) and total phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents in the extracts were determined. Antioxidant activity was determined as β-carotene/linoleic acid (%58.5and#177;0.021), DPPH (IC50: 1.220and#177;0.025) and ABTS (IC50:1.552and#177;0.021), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) (4.151and#177;0.056 mgTE/g), phoshomolibdenum assay (8.218and#177;0.015 mgAE/g) total phenolic, total flavonoid and tannin contents was found as (4.41and#177;0.007 mgGAE/mL), (87.142and#177;0.009 and#181;QE/g), and (30.178and#177;0.008 mgCEs/g) respectively, and then 14 different phenolic compounds in ethanol extracts was carried out by HPLC. Epicatechin (2742.09 and#181;g/g) and 2,5dihidroksi (2544.96 and#181;g/g) were the most abundant phenolic constituents in the extracts. According the results, the extract of V. glomeratum may be considered as a potential source of biological agents.

Antioxidant activities of acetone and methanol extracts from stems and leaves of Camellia japonica L, one of traditional Chinese medicine consumed in the eastnorth region of China, were examined by a DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging assay and a β-carotene-linoleic acid test. In the DPPH system, the antioxidant activity of the acetone extracts was superior to that of the methanol extracts, with IC50 values were 246.56 and 320.17μg/mL, respectively. In the β-carotene-linoleic acid test, the inhibition ratio of the acetone extracts was found to be the higher, compared with the methanol extracts, with IC50 values were 258.19 and 396.88 μg/mL In general, the methanol extract showed greater activity than the acetone extract in both systems, such results might be attributed to the effects of the components of the methanol extract. It was concluded that Camellia japonica L might be a potential natural source of antioxidants.

The objective of this study was to compare antioxidant activity from crudes of fruits, leaves, twigs and flowers of Mesua ferrea L. with hexane, dichloromethane and methanol by controlling time and temperature in the solvent extraction. All crude extracts were investigated for their antioxidant capacity in 1,1-diphenenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging. The results indicated that the high polar solvent exhibited the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity. The methanol extracts of leaves show the highest activity with IC50 of 89.94±0.65 μg/mL. The flowers, twigs and fruits methanol crude extracts show IC50 of 94.26±5.93, 94.45±1.67 and 722.94±5.85 μg/mL, respectively. The methanol extracts of leaves also had the highest total flavonoids content (325.79±3.08mgQE/g). The methanol extract of flowers and the dichloromethane extract of fruits presented higher total phenolic contents than the other extracts which contained 769.11±46.64 mgGAE/g and 703.62±12.62 mgGAE/g, respectively, followed by the methanol extract of leaves (348.36±38.53 mgGAE/g).

This study was designed to investigate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the essential oils from Piper officinarum C. DC. GC and GC/MS analysis of the leaf and stem oils showed forty one components, representing 85.6% and 93.0% of the oil, respectively. The most abundant components in the leaf oil were β-caryophyllene (11.2%), α-pinene (9.3%), sabinene (7.6%), β-selinene (5.3%) and limonene (4.6%), while β-caryophyllene (10.9%), α-phellandrene (9.3%), linalool (6.9%), limonene (6.7%) and α-pinene (5.0%) were the main components of the stem oil. The antioxidant activities were determined by using complementary tests: namely β-carotene-linoleic acid, DPPH radical scavenging and total phenolic assays. The stems oil showed weak activity (IC50 = 777.4 μg/mL) in the DPPH system, but showed moderate lipid peroxidation inhibition in the β-carotene-linoleic acid system (88.9 ± 0.35%) compared with BHT (95.5 ± 0.30%). Both oils showed weak activity against P. aeruginosa and E. coli with M IC values of 250 μg/mL.

Fruits of Nauclea latifolia  (Family Rubiaceae) have been used as food and medicinal plants. The ethnomedicinal reports indicated that it can be traditionally used for the treatment of dysentery, diarrhea, diabetes, malaria etc. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antioxidant, ?–amylase and ?–glucosidase activities of methanol extract of N. latifolia fruits at varying concentrations (20-100 µg/ml) using standard methods. The results of the DPPH and nitric oxide free radical scavenging capacity showed IC50 values 92.0µg/ml and 30.0µg/ml respectively indicating a good inhibitory capacity but lesser when compared to the standard, ascorbic acid which are < 10.0µg/ml and < 20.0µg/ml respectively. The analysis shows total phenolic contents of 147.9±3.35mg/g and ferric reducing antioxidant potential of 1604.1±9.20mg/g supporting the fact that phenolics are highly potent antioxidants. Based on the results obtained from ?–amylase and ?–glucosidase inhibition, the IC50 > 100µg/ml showing a lesser inhibitory activity when compared to the standard Acarbose with IC50 values of 50.1µg/ml and 44.0µg/ml respectively. The results clearly indicate that the methanol extract of N. latifolia has a moderate free radical scavenging activity resulting from various interaction between different components of the plant. It can be concluded that the fruits may provide natural source of bioactive compounds which is beneficial to human health and can be used as basis of folkloric remedies for diabetes.

Antioxidant activities of acetone and ethyl acetate extracts from Metaplexis japonica Makino, one of famous medicine plants in the eastnorth region of China, named luomo in Chinese, were examined by a DPPH (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical-scavenging assay and a β-carotene-linoleic acid test. In DPPH, the antioxidant activity of the acetone extracts, ethyl acetate extracts and derivative were IC50 were 313.21, 266.92 and 118.78μg/mL, respectively. In the β-carotene-linoleic acid test, IC50 were 285.09, 351.57 and 123.89μg/mL. It was concluded that Metaplexis japonica Makino and its derivatives might be a potential natural source of antioxidants .

Background: Research on medicinal plant antioxidants has emerged as a potential therapeutic to prevent free radical generated damage in the human body. Hammada elegans Botsch (popularly known as “Ajram”) is a xerophytic plant widely found in Laghouat region, but there are only a few reports about the biological or chemical properties of these species. Hence, the aim of this study is to investigate the antioxidant and the antihemolytic activities of hexanic, acetonic, methanolic and aqueous extracts of aerial parts of Algerian Hammada elegans Botsch by employing different in vitro assay systems. Methods: The total phenolic content, the flavonoid content and the condensed tannin amount were analyzed using Folin-Ciocalteu, aluminum chloride and vanillin assays, respectively. The in vitro antioxidant capacity of extracts was assessed by CUPRAC, iron chelating, ABTS•+and antihemolytic assays, and was expressed as EC50 values. Results: Among the analyzed extracts, the aqueous extract had the highest phenolic, flavonoid and tannin contents. Also, this extract displayed the highest antioxidant capacities compared to the other extracts and standards. Its EC50 value for ABTS radical-scavenging activity was 0.265 ± 0.003 mg/L. Moreover, this extract showed high iron (II) chelating ability (EC50 = 0.958 ± 0.001 mg/L), and good antioxidant activity in the cupric ion reducing activity (CUPRAC) in a concentration dependent manner (EC50 were 0.709 ± 0.002 mg/L). Additionally, this extract had the best antihemolytic activity against AAPH-induced hemolysis (EC50=0.090 ± 0.004 mg/L). Conclusion: Our study revealed that the aqueous extract of Hammada elegans Botsch, is a potential source of antioxidants which possess a high protective effect of membrane against free radical.

Aim: This study investigated the phytochemical constituents and in vitro antioxidant properties of methanol and aqueous leaf extracts of Geophila obvallata using standard methods. Materials and Methods: The in vitro antioxidant assays carried out were 1, 1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability, Nitric oxide (NO•) radical scavenging activity assay, 2, 2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS•+) radical cation scavenging assay, ferric reducing properties and hydroxyl radical scavenging assays. Results: Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, steroids, saponins, terpernoids and cardiac glycosides in both extracts. Relative to the aqueous extract, the methanol extract contained a higher amount of the secondary metabolites. However, both extracts exhibited appreciable and dose-dependent capacities for quenching DPPH, ABTS•+ and NO• free radicals, and potent ferric reducing ability to levels comparable to those of ascorbic acid. The crude methanol extract showed significantly increased (P<0.05) antioxidant activity than the aqueous extract. Conclusion: It was concluded that the extract possesses strong antioxidant properties due to its content of phytochemicals, and provides scientific basis for its ethno medicinal applications.

Antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity of methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate and chloroform extracts of aerial parts of Lamium purpureum L. was determined by DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and TRP assays. Contents of flavonoids and phenols were also investigated. The total phenolic content in the extracts, determined using Folin?Ciocalteu assay, ranged between 8.57 to 128.00 mg GAE/g d.e. while concentrations of flavonoids in the extracts varied from 24.20 to 39.80 mg QuE/g d.e. The highest phenolic content was found in methanol extract (128.00 mg GAE/g d.e.). The highest content of total flavonoids was identified in the methanol extract (39.80 mg QuE/g d.e.) and the lowest was in the chloroform (24.30 mg QuE/g d.e.). DPPH scavenging of the extracts was determined and obtained IC50 values ranged from 0.12 to 3.12 mg/mL of solution. The values of ABTS radical scavenging activity ranged from 0.35 to 1.80 mg AA/g. The highest ABTS antiradical activity was registered for methanol extract. The FRAP value was found within the range 0.08 to 1.04 ?mol Fe/mg. The best radical scavenger was methanol (1.04 ?mol Fe/mg). In reducing power assay different extracts of L. purpureum showed increasing of activity with increased concentration, and all extracts possessed substantial dose dependent antioxidant activity. The best reducing capacity was obtained with methanol extract of L. purpureum (0.0132 mg AA/mL). The results in this study confirmed that L. purpureum possesses moderate antioxidant properties.
