Visual activism in the geomedia era: Revitalizing heritage in the Old City of Shantou

With the rapid development of digital visualization technologies, the visual value of cultural heritage is increasingly important, giving rise to new ways to interpret the true worth of heritage. Taking the case of geomedia as an example, the article aims to reflect on how the visual culture in historic conservation has been changed by way of exploring the new significance of cultural heritage and its historic conservation in the light of geomedia. Based on my fieldtrip study of the historic conservation of the Old City in Shantou, southeastern China, I claim that historic conservation of the Old City, assisted by visual activism from the ground up, reveals its close relation to geographical sites through digital knowhow of geomedia. The interaction between image pixels and physical space contributes to the process of continuous creation and recreation of the heritage sites experienced by viewers/visitors; they are sensorially enticed to blend multiple interpretations into their physical experience in real time and construct multivalent situations for their embodied encounter. These heritage sites, once saturated with location-based visual enactment, help perform an effective role as a connective node to integrate different temporal periods as well as different groups of actors in their drive to better the city’s future.

The research covers the development of the legislation of the Ukrainian SSR cultural heritage protection problems. The rapid development of sectoral legislation in the second half of the twentieth century was driven by the need of preservation of cultural heritage sites, damaged during the Second World War, or affected by the improper use by various institutions and organizations.The purpose of the article is to analyze the specifics of legal regulation of cultural heritage protection in the Ukrainian SSR in the second half of the 1950 s – the end of the 1980 s.Scientific novelty. The analysis of the legislative acts of the Verkhovna Rada of the USSR and the Council of Ministers of the USSR, as well as by-laws of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR revealed the specifics of the legal regulation of cultural heritage protection in the Ukrainian SSR in the second half of the 1950 s – late 1980s, which consisted of application of separate national legal terminology. The main directions of legal regulation of cultural heritage protection during the period under review are singled out.Conclusions. Soviet legislation on the protection of cultural heritage, as any sectoral legislation, was unified, and the republican special-purpose laws duplicated Union norms. The legislation of the Ukrainian SSR of the 1950s – 1980s concerning the cultural heritage protection was developed in accordance with the Union legislation, as well as the decrees and orders of the USSR Government. At the same time, both federal and republican legislation had basic international rules, including the provisions of the 1972 Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, signed by the Soviet Union. The special aspect of the the Ukrainian SSR legislation was the consideration of some national traditions, including terminological ones. This could be noticed in the name of the Law of the Ukrainian SSR from July 13, 1978 «On the Protection and Use of Monuments of History and Culture», in which instead of the term «памятник» (monument) in the Russian language and the law, the term «monument» was introduced more wide term «пямятка» (site). In general, due to the consistent policy on conservation and extensive legislation, we have been able to preserve the destruction of monuments that remind the thousand-year history and culture of Ukraine.

AbstractWith the rapid development of interactive technologies using projection mapping (PJM), these digital technologies have introduced new interpretative possibilities for the presentation of cultural heritage sites. PJM attracts more visitors with greater expectations to cultural heritage sites through its excellent visual effects and guidance capabilities. In the past decade, especially after 2015, design events have frequently introduced digital projections to cultural heritage sightseeing spots worldwide. However, this trend has also led to the emergence of many digital projection events that merely exhibit beautiful projection effects on buildings and neglect to show the history and value of the cultural heritage site. Based on this phenomenon, this study compiled and analyzed 45 related cases of PJM applications at cultural heritage sites around the world from the past 5 years. These 45 examples were studied by disassembling the projection content, analyzing the information characteristics exhibited in each projection video, and arranging the obtained data on a timeline chart for analysis. According to the data, two information characteristics of PJM at cultural heritage sites can be observed: “the relationship between projection content and heritage” and “information tendency.” The advantages and limitations of these characteristics were distinguished and suggestions for the application of PJM on cultural heritage sites were derived. These results can be used as a reference for other research studies on visitors to cultural heritage sites and improving digital interpretation and presentation designs.

Abstract The old city of Banten Lama was an international port city developed in the 16-18th century AD. This old city, which once was the capital city of one of Indonesian Great Kingdom who has an ambassador in the Great Britain, can still be reconstructed based on the trace of monuments left scattered on the site at Kasemen District, Serang City. The preservation planning of this cultural heritage of an ancient city fits with the regional planning. Problems with this region heritage are the proximity between heritages and houses or shops and destructive activities. The data of spatial problems has never been mapped with a measured method. Spatial planning in this heritage area was done by aerial photography mapping. This paper reviews the use of the aerial photography method in planning for the preservation of space for cultural heritage areas. This method shows the existing condition of heritage buildings and sites that have proximity with houses, roads, and shops. This study shows that the preservation of the ancient city of Banten Lama can be done by providing substitutes for green open spaces for people who have been using cultural heritage sites for general recreational purposes, encouraging the development of settlements outside cultural heritage areas, and involving the community in community empowerment in the use of cultural heritage in harmony with preservation.Keywords: Banten Lama, Cultural Heritage Area Preservation, Spatial Planning, Indonesia Abstrak Kota Kuno Banten Lama merupakan kota pelabuhan internasional yang berkembang pada abad 16-18 M. Ibu kota kerajaan tradisional Indonesia yang memiliki duta besar di Inggris ini masih dapat direkonstruksi berdasarkan monumen-monumen yang tersebar di wilayah Kecamatan Kasemen, Kota Serang. Pelestarian kawasan kota kuno bersinggungan dengan penataan ruang di wilayah tersebut. Permasalahan dalam pelestarian situs dan bangunan cagar budaya di Banten adalah kedekatan jarak antara cagar budaya dengan permukiman atau pertokoan dan pemanfaatan yang tidak selaras dengan pelestarian. Data permasalahan keruangan tersebut belum pernah dipetakan dengan metode yang terukur. Tulisan ini mengulas mengenai penggunaan metode foto udara dalam perencanaan pelestarian ruang kawasan cagar budaya. Metode tersebut dapat memperlihatkan kondisi eksisting situs dan bangunan cagar budaya yang bersinggungan dengan permukiman, jalan, dan pertokoan. Kajian menunjukkan bahwa pelestarian kota kuno Banten Lama dapat dilakukan dengan menyediakan pengganti lapangan terbuka hijau bagi masyarakat yang selama ini menggunakan situs-situs cagar budaya sebagai sarana rekreasi umum, mendorong pembangunan permukiman di luar kawasan cagar budaya, dan melibatkan masyarakat dalam pemanfaatan cagar budaya yang selaras dengan pelestarian. Keywords: Banten Lama, pelestarian kawasan cagar budaya, perencanaan tata ruang, Indonesia

Abstract- According to the Republic of Indonesian’s Laws Number 11, year 2010, Cultural heritage is a cultural inheritance which differenced in the form of cultural heritage objects, cultural heritage buildings, cultural heritage structures, cultural heritage sites, and cultural heritage areas on land or in water that need to be preserved because they have important values for history, science, education, religion, and culture through the determination process. All elements or things that deserve to be embodied in the status of Cultural Heritage certainly have some criteria and limitations to be made as one of the conservation efforts made for these elements. Since the completion of development as one of the sky objects’ research at that time, the main function of the Bosscha Observatory is still running according to the initial function of the building. So that with this fact makes Bosscha Observatory has all the criteria needed by both the dynamics and the region to have the status of a Building / Heritage Area. Determination of the location of the establishment of the Bosscha Observatory was clear, where when the initial planning in the 1920s, Lembang City became a strategic location in the construction of an Observatory. But nowadays, Bosscha Observatory has obstacles, where the obstacles faced are the rapid development of settlements in the City of Lembang and cannot be avoided. This makes the main function of Bosscha Observatory disturbed by several aspects which are mainly influenced by environmental factors. With the occurrence of several environmental changes that clearly enough to interfere with the main function of the Bosscha Observatory made several parties involved in making a number of efforts in order to preserve the Bosscha Observatory as a National Cultural Heritage Building. All conservation efforts that have been carried out have a reference, namely a review of applicable laws. The purpose of this study was to find out whether preservation efforts that have been done both written and physical can maintain the main function of the Bosscha Observatory as a center for observing celestial bodies. The method used is quantitative methods, data obtained from literature studies, direct observation to the field, and interviews with Bosscha Observatory. It has concluded that some conservation efforts are still being carried out which have not been optimally carried out considering that the legal basis as a reference for all actions taken has not yet clearly defined the protection of the main functions of the Bosscha Observatory. The current state of the Moscow Metro station of the first priority that became operational in 1935 does not allow it to be called a cultural heritage site. This is due to the fact that lighting modernisation carried out by the Moscow Metro was based on fluorescent lamps. Such lamps are more energy efficient compared to incandescent lamps, which were used in original lighting devices specified in the Station Lighting Project developed by architects and designers. However, they significantly changed the station appearance, transforming the originally designed station with entire well visible architectural tectonics?1 from the standpoint of lighting into a simple, flat, unremarkable, and little loaded station of the Moscow Metro./br> This paper describes a method of lighting reconstruction at Krasnoselskaya station by means of original lighting devices that meet modern standards and requirements for cultural heritage sites. The historical analysis on the development of the station lighting environment was conducted during its operation in order to understand what kind of station was conceived by its architects, what changes occurred with its lighting over time, and how it influenced the station appearance and safety of passenger transportation.

Delighting consumers has been one of the most important goals for marketing stakeholders but the effect of historical nostalgia on tourists delight at the world cultural heritage sites has rarely been examined. This study examines the impact of historical nostalgia on the heritage tourists' delight, their satisfaction and destination loyalty intention. The survey for the study was conducted at the world cultural heritage site of Mahabalipuram, India. The hypotheses were tested through the structural equation modelling technique. The results indicated positive and significant effect of historical nostalgia on tourists' delight, satisfaction and destination loyalty intention. The study makes contribution to the tourism studies by examining the role of historical nostalgia in delighting the tourists at the cultural heritage sites and instructs the managers to evoke such experiences to keep the heritage tourists delighted and thereby enhance their loyalty.

This paper reviews the literature concerning technology used for creating and delivering accessible museum and cultural heritage sites experiences. It highlights the importance of the delivery suited for everyone from different areas of expertise, namely interaction design, pedagogical and participatory design, and it presents how recent and future artificial intelligence (AI) developments can be used for this aim, i.e.,improving and widening online and in situ accessibility. From the literature review analysis, we articulate a conceptual framework that incorporates key elements that constitute museum and cultural heritage online experiences and how these elements are related to each other. Concrete opportunities for future directions empirical research for accessibility of cultural heritage contents are suggested and further discussed.
