Background: Quality of motion and neuromuscular balance are noted predictors of acute injury risk. Early sports specialization and extremely high activity levels have been linked to high risk of injury, especially overuse injury. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate for any relationships between quality of physical movement, quantity of physical activity, and degree of sports specialization in a healthy cohort of children and adolescents. Methods: Healthy children between the ages 10 and 18 completed the HSS Pedi-FABS to assess quantity of physical activity and the Jayanthi scale to assess degree of sports specialization. Quality of motion was assessed using motion analysis sensors (DorsaVi, Kew, Australia) during 5 repetitions of 4 different jumping and squatting motions (Table 1). For each repetition, one point was given for low risk of injury anterior or medial/lateral motion, for a maximum score of 2 per leg. Quality of motion scores were summed for a maximum score of 100 per participant. Specialization level was dichotomized as high specialization with a Jayanthi scale score of 2 or 3 and low specialization with a score of 1 or 2. Independent samples t-tests were used to compare high vs. low specialization participants on physical activity quantity and overall quality of motion. A Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between quantity of physical activity and quality of motion. Results: Final analyses included 147 participants (72% male) with a mean age of 13.4 ± 2.2 years. For the entire cohort, the mean Pedi-FABS score was 22.9 ± 6.8, the mean quality score was 25.5 ± 13.5 and 73% were highly specialized. Participants that were highly specialized displayed low risk motion more frequently than participants with low sport specialization (27.6 ± 14.0 vs 19.8 ± 10.1, p < 0.01; Table 2). Highly specialized participants had significantly higher activity levels (24.6 ± 5.9 vs 18.1 ± 6.9, p < 0.001). Additionally, quality of motion was moderately correlated with physical activity level (r = 0.349, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Overall quality of motion as in jump-landing tasks in healthy children was better in highly specialized participants. Taken together with existing literature, although early specialization may put young athletes at risk for overuse injuries, highly sports specialized youth athletes may be at lower risk for acute injury. Future research should explore associations between sports specialization, physical activity, save movement patterns, and athletic injuries. [Table: see text][Table: see text]

Participants who were highly specialized had significantly higher activity levels (24.6 ± 5.9 vs 18.1 ± 6.9; P < .001). Movement quality was moderately correlated with physical activity level ( r = 0.335; P < .001). Physical activity; hours of organized sports activity; hours of free, unorganized physical activity; and specialization level were not significant predictors of movement quality when controlling for age. Age alone predicted 24.2% of the variance in the overall movement quality score ( R2 = 0.242; B = 3.0; P < .001). Conclusion: This study found that sports specialization and physical activity levels were not associated with movement quality when controlling for age, which was the most important variable predicting athletic movement quality. Although all participants displayed movement patterns that were associated with high risk for injury, overall movement quality improved with advancing chronological age. Clinical Relevance: All young athletes should ensure that neuromuscular training accompanies sport-specific training to reduce risk of injury.

AIMS: Little evidence demonstrates the influence of physical activity habits on the quality of life of people with visual impairment (VI). To gain a broader understanding, this study attempted to verify the relation between the habits of physical activity and quality of life in people with VI.METHODS: The sample consisted of 53 visually impaired volunteers. The Clinical and Sociodemographic Assessment Sheet, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire short version and the Quality of Life Assessment Instrument (WHOQOL-Bref) were used.RESULTS: The mean age was 42.39±2.10 years, with a predominance of males and the mean Body Mass Index was 27.55±0.76. Predominant physical activity levels were between moderate to high. Males presented significantly higher levels of vigorous physical activity (p=0.033) and higher scores in WHOQOL-Bref, when compared to the female sex.CONCLUSION: The higher the physical activity levels of this population with VI, the better the quality of life. The participants had a predominance of moderate to high physical activity, as well as, the male presented higher levels of physical activity, when compared with the female in vigorous activities.

Abstract The long-term cardiorespiratory function in burn-injured children can be jeopardized due to complications brought on by the injury. This study sought to assess the cardio-respiratory responses to maximal exercise in children who sustained a burn injury and explore the relationships among cardio-respiratory response, physical activity levels (PALs), and health-related quality of life (HRQL). Forty-five burn-injured children (age:13.89±2.43 years; duration since burn-injury: 3.13±0.93 years) and 52 age- and gender-matched healthy children (14.15±2.27 years) participated in this study. Both cohorts were evaluated for the maximal exercise capacity [defined by peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), maximum heart rate (HRmax), minute ventilation (VE), ventilatory equivalent (VEq), respiratory rate (RR), and respiratory exchange ratio (RER)], PALs, and HRQL. The burn-injured children had significantly lower VO2peak (P=.0001) and VE (P=.003) and higher VEq (P&lt;.0001) and RR (P=.007) than their healthy controls, indicating less efficient cardio-respiratory capacity. However, the HRmax (P=.092) and RER (P=.251) were similar. The burn-injured children reported significantly lower PALs (P=.014) and HRQL (P&lt;.0001). The PALs [r (95%CI) = 0.411 (0.132 to 0.624); P = .005] and HRQL [r (95%CI) = 0.536 (0.284 to 0.712); P = .0001] were significantly correlated with the cardio-respiratory capacity represented by VO2peak in burn-injured group. The variations in VO2peak explained ⁓ 17% and 28.7% of the variations in PALs and HRQL, respectively. In conclusion, the cardio-respiratory efficiency of the burn-injured children may remain limited, even up to a few years following the injury. The limited cardio-respiratory capacity account in part for the reduced PALs and HRQL.

Abstract Aims The primary aim of the programme was a minimum of a 5% weight reduction of the initial weight, while the secondary outcomes were a reduction in participants’ body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), AUDIT-C score and an increase in the Mediterranean diet (MD) score and an improvement in physical activity levels. Methods This 'before and after' study was a 10-week weight management (WM) programme and it was developed and delivered in community pharmacies in Patras chosen for convenience, thus consisting the first service of its type in Greece. The sample size was calculated (n = 96) based on the mean BMI for a Greek male and female individual, and the standard deviation (SD) of weight at baseline of 14 kg. Results Nearly every participant enrolled in the 20 participating pharmacies, 97.4% (n = 114/117), achieved the programme’s aim, losing at least 5% of their initial weight. The mean percentage of total weight loss of the 117 participants at the 10th week was 8.97% (SD 2.65), and the t-test showed statistically significant results (P-value < 0.001; 95% CI [8.48, 9.45]). A significant reduction in the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) was observed in both male (P-value = 0.004) and female (P-value < 0.001) participants. The participants’ BP and AUDIT-C score and physical activity levels significantly improved (P-value < 0.001), as well as their MD score. Conclusion This study provides the first evidence that Greek pharmacists have the potential to play an important role within primary healthcare and that after training they are able to provide public health services for both the public’s benefit and their clinical role enhancement.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) impairs exercise tolerance and daily physical activity (PA). Aside from the hemodynamic limitations, physical, cognitive and emotional factors may play a relevant and as yet unexplored role. We investigated whether there is an association between the PA level and psychological disorders, health-related quality of life, and daily activities. We also searched for an association of the PA level with clinical factors and functional capacity. This was an analytical, cross-sectional, observational study conducted in a Brazilian University Hospital. Twenty stable PAH subjects wore an accelerometer for a week and completed an activity diary. They answered the quality of life questionnaire (SF-36), as well as the anxiety and depression scale (HADS), and the Manchester Respiratory Activities of Daily Living questionnaire (MRADL). Transthoracic echocardiography, the 6-Minute walk test (6MWT), the 1-minute sit-to-stand test (STST), and spirometry were performed. For statistical analysis we used Chi-square tests or Fisher's test as appropriate and the Mann-Whitney test to compare numerical values between two groups. The relationship between the parameters was assessed using the Spearman correlation test. The mean age was 44.3 years, 80% were women, 80% had idiopathic PAH, and 20% had connective tissue disease . The mean daily step count was 4,280 ± 2,351, and the mean activity time was 41.6 ± 19.3 minutes. The distance covered (6MWT) was 451.5 m, and the number of movements (1-STST) was 23.8. Thirty percent scored positive for anxiety, and 15% for depression (HADS). There was a significant correlation between accelerometer data and walking distance (6MWT), number of movements (1-STST), level of daily physical activity (MRADL), and depression symptoms. Our findings support the hypothesis that other aspects beyond physical and hemodynamic ones might impact the daily physical activity of patients with PAH.

Adventure-physical education has been proposed to promote adolescents’ physical development, but little is known about physical activity levels during such lessons. Using the System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time, we observed students’ (ages 11–14 years) physical activity levels in co-educational classes during 43 adventure-physical education lessons at seven public schools. The mean percentage (±SD) of time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was 28.3% (±16.3%). The greatest percentage of lesson time was spent in two activities—high elements (24.1% ± 36.5%) and initiatives (22.3% ± 32.4%). When data were aggregated across all lessons, 40.0% of the time in high elements and 13.7% of the time in initiatives was spent in MVPA. Of all MVPA time, 31.5% occurred in high elements and another 12.6% in initiatives. Compared with traditional physical education lessons, less time is spent in MVPA during adventure lessons. Efforts to increase MVPA should target high elements and initiative activities.

The mean and standard deviation over 24 h for 3 groups of animals - active, intermediate and inactive - in physical activity units were 10948 ± 3360, 2611 ± 1973 and 484 ± 316 respectively. The differences were significant ( P = 0·004), demonstrating the ability of the method to distinguish between groups that can be visibly differentiated. The small within-animal physical activity standard deviation (18·85 PAU) obtained in another group, suggests that it also yields reliable physical activity measurements for non-human primates. The monitoring device used can discriminate between individual nonhuman primate physical activity levels in a free-living environment and does not alter daily behaviour. This makes possible the study of the relationship between physical activity and atherosclerosis in nonhuman primates.

Purpose: Physical activity is well known to improve or maintain exercise capacity and overall health in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). However, many patients do not meet recommended guidelines for physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine if individualized, targeted coaching could improve the levels of physical activity and quality of life in children and adolescents with CF. Subjects: Twelve children with CF, ages 7 to 17, participated in this study.Method: Each participant completed a physical activity questionnaire (PAQ) and a disease-specific quality of life questionnaire (CFQ) at baseline and three months later. The participants were given pedometers and a 10,000 step per day target. Participants also participated in discussions regarding ways to increase physical activity appropriate for their interest, abilities and age. Weekly follow-up phone calls were made to obtain pedometer counts and discuss physical activities performed. Results: Physical activity scores (PAQ) improved in 6 of 12 participants. Quality of life improved in many dimensions of the CFQ, particularly in vitality (3 of 5 improved); emotional (8 of 12 improved) and respiratory (7 of 12 improved). Conclusions: The results of this small pilot study suggest that an individualized coaching approach to physical activity in children and adolescents with CF may improve physical activity levels and improve important aspects of quality of life in some children with CF.

This research was conducted to obtain information about the learning process of Islamic education at the high school in Maluku Tengah. In this study applied a method of evaluation studies Program, collection of data obtained through the study of documents, interviews, questionnaires and observation. The data is then classified into the category of excellent, good, sufficient, less, and very less, based on standards that have been set. The findings in the evaluation of the learning program at Islamic Education for high school in Maluku Tengah district, shows that the quality of the learning process, including both categories. The learning process is determined by the element or the following aspects; (1) the Teacher's performance is judged by category, with the acquisition of average score 4.14 or 82.79% of the maximum score, (2) Learning Facilities are assessed either by obtaining the average score of 3.71 or 74.17% of the maximum score, (3) Climate class is rated good with the acquisition of the mean score of 3.61 or 72.04% of the maximum score. (4) the attitude of the learners are assessed either by obtaining the average score 4.01 or 80.09% of the maximum score. (5) the learning motivation of learners assessed either by obtaining the average score or 77.71 3.88% of the maximum score. So based on the results of the assesment and the categorisation then determined that the quality of the learning process the Islamic education judged included on the category either, with the acquisition of the average score or 3.88 77.50% of the maximum score.
