The Role of Emotional Intelligence Competencies in Effective Teaching and Teacher’s Performance in Higher Education

The relevance of emotions in teaching is now a widely studied aspect, although contemplation on how the teachers are able to realize, regulate and control their emotions is being deliberated upon. The article attempts to understand the concept of emotional intelligence (EI) in higher education teachers and how it can be incorporated in effective teaching as emotional intelligence competencies (EIC) for superior performance. The technique of structural equation modelling (SEM) has been applied to validate and propose a model for EI-based teaching competencies and their relation with the core competencies. It was statistically proven that EIC have a strong impact on attitude of teachers which in turns contribute highest towards superior performance. The study contributes towards research in the field of EI in teaching and suggests that institutes should give critical importance to enhancement of EIC and accordingly implement suitable training programmes for ensuring effective teaching and superior performance.

La relevancia de las emociones en la enseñanza es ahora un aspecto ampliamente estudiado, aunque se está deliberando sobre la forma en que los docentes pueden identificar, regular y controlar sus emociones, el estudio propone cómo se puede incorporar la inteligencia emocional en la enseñanza mediante las competencias para lograr un mejor desempeño docente. Se utilizó la técnica de la encuesta recopilando datos de 244 docentes universitarios a través de un cuestionario mediante el muestreo aleatorio simple. Los datos se han analizado mediante el modelado de ruta utilizando el enfoque de mínimos cuadrados parciales (PLS) del modelo de ecuaciones estructurales SEM con el software SmartPLS 3.3.0, los hallazgos revelaron que el modelo tiene un impacto significativo en el desempeño docente, los coeficientes de determinación fueron; habilidades del docente (r2=0.703) actitud del docente (r2=0.661), conocimientos del docente (r2=0.648) y para el desempeño del docente (r2=0.733). con un error cuadrático medio de aproximación (SRMR) de 0.056 que hace relevante el modelo confirmatorio. Por lo tanto, se demostró estadísticamente que la inteligencia emocional tiene un fuerte impacto en las competencias de los docentes, lo que a su vez contribuye en el desempeño del docente universitario. The survey technique was used, collecting data from 244 university teachers through a questionnaire using simple random sampling. The data has been analyzed using partial least squares path modeling (PLS), approach of the SEM structural equation model with the SmartPLS 3.3.0 software, the findings revealed that the model has a significant impact on teaching performance, the determination coefficients were; teacher skills (r2 = 0.703) teacher attitude (r2 = 0.661), teacher knowledge (r2 = 0.648) and for teacher performance (r2 = 0.733). with a root mean square error of approximation (SRMR) of 0.056 that makes the confirmatory model relevant. Therefore, it was statistically demonstrated that emotional intelligence has a strong impact on teachers' competences, which in turn contributes to the professor performance.

The study investigated the effect of market orientation on the performance of small and medium enterprises in case of Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Primary data was collected from a total of 250 owners/managers of small and medium enterprises using structured questionnaire. A multivariate data analysis technique of structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the data. The result indicated that customer orientation and interfunctional coordination dimensions of MO are significantly and positively affected small and medium enterprises performance. However, competitor orientation dimension was not found to have a positive and significant effect on the performance. The findings revealed that small and medium enterprises need to be more market oriented to realize superior performance. In addition, the different beta coefficient of market orientation indicated that new business ventures are highly recommended to conduct a market orientation profile and take care in investing their scarce resources. Moreover, the mixed results indicate that firms are advised to replicate market orientation to score superior performance with due care in considering the contexts and time in the industry they are operating and match strategies with their internal resources and core competencies. Finally, this study contributed to the almost wholly overlooked research on market orientation and performance linkages in Ethiopian case and the empirical context of this study is quite novel and helpful for developed nations firms who are trying to operate in emerging economies such as Ethiopia.

The “Digital India” is leading to mass harnessing of the power of social media in every industry including the academic fraternity. The vast reach of social media is now being captured by academicians worldwide and educators are actively adopting various social media tools for personal and professional use. However, with the multitude of available approaches and pedagogical ways, it becomes a challenge to select the most appropriate one for teaching related activities. The papers attempts to identify and analyse the social media competencies and their effect on the knowledge, skill and attitude to produce superior performance by teachers. The statistical technique of Structural Equation Modelling has been applied to develop a model. It was inferred that social media competencies have a significant impact on the core competencies of teachers to achieve superior performance. The results suggest that the use of social media should be encouraged and appropriate strategies should be devised for its usage to make learning more interesting and informative.

Abstract Leadership and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) stayed at pinnacle in the arena of organizational behavior research since decades and has attained significant consideration of scholars pursuing to define multifaceted dynamics of leadership and their influence on follower’s behavior at work. The voluntary behavior of Organizational citizenship improves organizational effectiveness, and it goes beyond formal job duties. This study attempts to explore the association amongst transformational leadership and organizational citizenship behavior of teachers in public sector higher education institutions in Pakistan. Study of organizational citizenship behavior in educational organizations and academicians is of high value that definitely requires attention. This study examines the direct and indirect influence of transformational leadership through exploring the mediating role of emotional intelligence. The model was tested by employing structural equation modelling technique on survey responses collected from academicians. Results from 220 responses indicated that relationship between transformational leadership and Organizational Citizenship Behavior is statistically significant where Emotional Intelligence plays an important role as a mediator. The results support and add to the positive effects of transformational leadership style interconnected with extra role behavior at work making it more meaningful. The findings make a significant contribution to leadership and organizational behavior literature in higher education sector and propose that organizations should implement practices that help in enhancing the level of organizational citizenship behavior in organizations.

The paper describes the method for increasing the level of self-organisation in students which has been developed by the author. It also contains the method testing results and presents the prospects and risks teachers could face while applying the method in a higher education institution. The purpose of this study is to find out the prospects and risks of applying the method for increasing the level of self-organisation in students and to determine the ways of reducing the risks. Methodology. The author points out the learning approaches which were the basis of developing the method and describes diagnostic methods for determining students’ self-organisation levels. The work focused on increasing each student’s initial level consists of a theoretical and a practical part and includes project activities on creating a study guide. The results of the study. The method developed proved to be effective. It was established by diagnosing the final level of self-organisation in students in the experimental and control groups. The paper considers the advantages of the method among which there is universal character, flexibility, improvements to teacher’s and students’ professional competence, etc. At the same time it is necessary to be aware of the risks due to the increased amount of teacher’s work and the fact that students’ work within the project tends to be monotonous. In conclusion, the prospects of the method for increasing the level of self-organisation in students are related to its advantages and the final results of the work. The risks of its use can be reduced with the help of the measures proposed in the paper.

ITC Limited is a multi-business conglomerate that has, among its business portfolio Agri-Business, that has grown since its inception in 1990 to be one of Indias largest exporters of agricultural products, with core competencies in select commodities like feed ingredients, food grains, marine products, processed fruits, contributing 56% of nearly US$ 5.4 billion of ITCs foreign exchange earnings over the last ten years (2013). However, the very nature of the business makes it highly dependent on water, a scarce natural resource. Infact, in a research done by the United Nations Population Fund (November 6, 2003), as much as two-thirds of the worlds population is predicted to be under high water stress in 2025. To meet these qualms, ITC has formulated an innovative model - the Soil and Moisture Conservation Programme. This Situational Case Study, targeted towards management students, studying Corporate Governance, Strategic Management, Business Environment, Business Policy, aims to identify the embedded sustainability model of ITCs Agri-business division, analyse it in terms of its challenges and impact, and initiate discussion about Corporate Sustainability vis-a-vis Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This original work may also be undertaken for developmental related workshops/ training programmes for students and working professionals of innovation, CSR, sustainability and shared, among others, in various Chambers of Commerce and Academic forums on the same. Abstract Background The COVID-19 outbreak is a global pandemic, during which the community preventive and protective behaviors play a crucial role in the containment and control of infection. This study was designed to contribute to the existing knowledge on how risk communication (RC) and risk perception (RP) affect protective and preventive behaviors (PPB) during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods The required data were extracted from a national online survey of Iranian adults aged 15 and older during March 15–19, 2020 (n=3213). Data analysis was performed using structural equation modeling. Results The study findings reveal that RC has direct and indirect positive effects on PB. Furthermore, this study also provides new evidence indicating that RP mediates the relationship between RC and PB and there is a two-way relationship between RC and RP. These interactions may have impact on risk communication strategies which should be adopted during this pandemic. Conclusion The study findings have remarkable implications for informing future communications as well as interventions during this ongoing outbreak and subsequent national risk events.

AbstractThis article presents a practical project to develop a language policy for an English-Medium-Instruction university in Uzbekistan. Although the university is de facto English-only, it presents a complex language ecology, which in turn has led to confusion and disagreement about language use on campus. The project team investigated the experience, views and attitudes of over a thousand people, including faculty, students, administrative and maintenance staff, in order to arrive at a proposed policy which would serve the whole community, based on the principle of tolerance and pragmatism. After outlining the relevant language and educational context and setting out the methods and approach of the underpinning research project, the article goes on to present the key findings. One of the striking findings was an appetite for control and regulation of language behaviours. Language policies in Higher Education invariably fall down at the implementation stage because of a lack of will to follow through on their principles and their specific guidelines. Language policy in international business on the other hand is characterised by a control stage invariably lacking in language planning in education. Uzbekistan is a polity used to control measures following from policy implementation. The article concludes by suggesting that Higher Education in Central Asia may stand a better chance of seeing through language policies around English-Medium Instruction than, for example, in northern Europe, based on the tension between tolerance on the one hand and control on the other.
