An Interprofessional Team-Based Experiential Learning Experience in Public Libraries

The Stony Brook Medicine Healthy Libraries Program (HeLP) is an interprofessional team-based experiential learning opportunity for health professional students. University faculty members in the fields of nursing, public health, social work, and library science collaborated with four suburban public library directors to design, implement, and evaluate a team-based interprofessional service-learning experience, in which supervised students engaged in health monitoring and promotion in the library setting. Participating students were enrolled in either a semester-long population health course ( n = 16), a Master of Social Work fieldwork internship ( n = 2), a Master of Library Science internship ( n = 1), or a Master of Public Health practicum ( n = 2). HeLP faculty educated students on content, library culture, communication, professional roles/responsibilities, and documentation using standardized data collection tools. Concurrently, the interprofessional student teams delivered resources to patrons 1 day a week, with alternating locations, for a minimum of 2 hours per visit over the course of 6 weeks. HeLP provided students with an opportunity to apply core competencies based on the Interprofessional Education Collaborative. The team-based approach fostered interprofessional learning, as students worked together to assist library patrons on health and social needs. Throughout the program’s duration, students documented the type of resources provided, the types of encounters between team members, and the number of referrals. Student learning was assessed after program completion using three open-ended reflection questions.

Service-learning has become an established pedagogy in higher education classrooms. With a push in recent years to offer classroom experiences that offer more than static lectures, service-learning incorporates three main elements into its model; experiential learning, contribution to the community, and reflection which merges theory with practice for a unique learning experience. Service-learning can also be found in early models of library science education. This article will highlight service-learning projects in both libraries and archives that used innovative methods to create partnerships in the community. It will also argue that both libraries and archives should not be overlooked when considering these projects and can be valuable resources for successful service-learning partnerships.

Abstract Background Gerontology education has evolved from focusing primarily on the individual practitioner outcomes to promoting integrated, inter-professional team approaches to integrated care. Practicum training and service learning are effective pedagogy for paraprofessionals in integrated care settings to support clinicians and advance their effectiveness in meeting the needs of older adults. Interprofessional education (IPE) aims to enhance the capacity of practitioners to work collaboratively as integrated team members. Yet, little is known about the implementation of IPE in colleges and universities that are not affiliated with a medical center or medical school. This presentation will describe the implementation of IPE in a School of Social Work without a medical school system. We will explore students’ experiences with the implementation, facilitation, and evaluation of this workforce development model, and will discuss both challenges and successes. Methods Narrative data collected over the past two-year period with social work student participants in IPE reflect their perspectives on the selection process for the specialized training, placement in an interprofessional integrated care setting, and the learning experience. Participants represented cohorts of more than 200 trainees. Results Challenges of effective interprofessional health care teams include the approach taken to integrating the teams, level of knowledge and skills required to be an effective team member, and the need for supervision within integrated care experiences. Successes include increased professional self-efficacy. Participants reported post-completion of IPE, (1) desirable outcomes achieved for their patients, such as care satisfaction and role satisfaction for themselves as practitioners.

An experiential interprofessional learning opportunity for university students was developed to demonstrate core competencies (CC) based on the Interprofessional Education Collaborative and to foster a deeper understanding of the interaction between literature, health care, and social justice. Faculty members in the Schools of Professional Development, Public Health, Medicine, and Social Welfare at Stony Brook University contributed to the program including use of the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot (2010). The book was a springboard to combine John Dewey’s educational ideas of constructivist learning with select CC. Invitations for participation were extended to faculty and students enrolled in graduate programs in Teaching, Public Health, Medicine, Social Work, and Physician Assistant Education as well as undergraduate health science majors. The ultimate learning event was a 4-hour evening program that facilitated teamwork and collaboration among the 250 participants. The event presented information and context in multiple ways: The book inspired an innovative presentation, followed by pointed questions, discussion, problem solving and reflection. Topics explored included communication across cultures and diverse populations, privacy and patient rights, professional roles and responsibilities, and advocacy for self and others. Following the event course, instructors collected post-event reflective essays submitted by the master of public health student participants, which were analyzed using qualitative methods. This article describes the experiential learning program and the evaluation of its impact on students, with the purpose of enhancing the potential for other institutions to replicate this novel educational structure and achieve Interprofessional Education Collaborative CC.

Purpose This paper aims to explore service learning with its insights in empowering corporate responsibility awareness. Attempts to build corporate responsibility widely in incorporating into the sustainability engagement could be demonstrated in fostering the transformative experiential learning with extensive evaluation and reconfiguration of existing programs. The focus on enhancing the learning experience in emphasizing the community engagement would be applied with strengthening the actual performance in encompassing the ability raising awareness about the environmental issues. Design/methodology/approach The approach used in this paper refers to develop the conceptual framework about the service learning with various strategies to give insight on corporate social responsibility (CSR). Incorporating the approach of conceptualizing the basis of service learning, key consideration was generated into particular enhancement of service learning in contributing to the CSR. Findings The finding reveals that getting benefit to serving into the community engagement may take beneficial outcomes with its valuable insight to assist in the progress of program designed with associating to enhance corporate responsibility and sustainability awareness. The advancement of the social control among the companies would be deployed within empowering service learning for CSR where sustainability awareness-based community service as embodiment of CSR should be enhanced through nurturing corporate responsibility-based transformative experiential learning. Moreover, this initiative refers to an attempt to strengthen the basis of corporate responsibility and sustainability awareness-based experiential learning, which could enlarge creative thinking with envisioning sustainability and corporate responsibility. Originality/value This study is expected to contribute to the experiential learning to enhance the sustainability within the learning setting engaged in achieving what to contribute to the environmental concern. In creating the situation where the balance between serving and learning can be achieved, attempts to encourage them in joining the service learning program should be collaborated with orienting both personal and social community oriented comprehensively in underlying the responsibility awareness, the sustainability-based moral values. These aim to enhance the understanding stage about the care for protecting the environmental concern within learning experience with the goal to produce responsible awareness especially by economic agents such as shareholders, managers, regulators and active participants to promote sustainable benefits.

In this article, we examine the value of combining transformative and service learning pedagogical practices in management education programmes to encourage management students to be more critical and reflexive regarding serious contemporary issues like social inequality and sustainability. We draw on a long-term management education experience conducted in the northeastern region of Brazil, where international students learn how to develop a real-time community-based project with local inhabitants. We argue that while service learning approaches promote pragmatic action-based principles, transformative learning acts at the epistemic level, contributing to change in values. In addition, Paulo Freire’s ideas are integrated to reinforce critical and reflexive dimensions of the learning experience. Our results offer a process-based model showing how a critical experiential learning pedagogy might lead to the development of community-based competences, which, in turn, might lead to changes in the deeply held values of the participants. Freire’s emancipatory ideas are applied not only regarding the relationship between teachers and students, but also to the distinction between Western and non-Western societies, going beyond questioning of the destructive consequences of financial capitalism to question the hegemony of one worldview over all other possible ones.

The University of Utah is a publicly funded, R1 university located in the United States, with a mission statement that includes recognition of its global role, asserting that “. . . we engage local and global communities to promote education, health, and quality of life.” As part of that engagement, the University of Utah has offered learning abroad opportunities since 1967. Approximately 1 in 10 students participates in a global learning experience, and 80% of programs are short term (defined as 10 weeks or less). The pedagogical theories that guide these short-term programs are experiential learning, authentic learning, and intentional targeted intervention. We describe three short-term learning abroad programs in public health and social work—for students at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate level—connecting the reported benefits to the pedagogical model and theories used to develop the specific curriculum for these short-term programs. Faculty use a variety of reflective tools to help students learn to function in their new setting (experiential learning); explore and meaningfully construct concepts and relationships as they address real-world problems (authentic learning); and facilitate intercultural growth (intentional targeted learning). The University of Utah has adapted a three-stage model for learning abroad that incorporates principles from these theories to drive program activities: Plan (predeparture), Learn (program participation), and Integrate (postprogram). Immediate benefits to students of participating in a global-learning experience include intercultural learning, personal, and career development. Benefits to faculty include scholarly products in the domains of education and service learning, community-engaged participation, and research.

AbstractThe article discusses the role of interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in the delivery of service to a young child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and his family. An introduction to the concepts is provided with an outline of the strengths and challenges evident in implementing an IPCP approach to quality care. The core competencies for IPE and IPCP are also explained with examples of their application to children with ASD and their families. After reading this article, health care providers should be able to summarize their role in IPE and IPCP and identify their responsibility as a member of a collaborative team. The value of an interprofessional team in practice is emphasized, and ways to build successful teams are explained.

Interprofessional education refers to the collaboration of students from different disciplines towards the resolution of a series of clinical situations. The general objective of this study was to analyze the perspective of the participants in interprofessional simulations (doctors and nurses) in emergency situations. Qualitative study with an inductive approach for the identification of categories derived from the opinions provided by the participants in interprofessional simulations was conducted (n = 58). Individual open-ended questions were provided through a self-completed qualitative questionnaire. The answers were subjected to a descriptive content analysis. Three emergent themes, 13 categories and 21 sub-categories were obtained. Emotions-related aspects, strengths, and areas to be improved were identified with respect to the interprofessional simulations. The participants highlighted the great closeness to reality, they felt comfortable and confident, and their positive emotions had a greater weight than the negative ones (uncomfortableness, frustration, and insecurity). The most prominent positive aspects were teamwork, the realism of the training, and the empowerment of the nurses. The areas that could be improved were those related to aspects associated with carrying out the simulations, the demand for joint planning, and the improvements in the development of the sessions by the facilitators (co-debriefers). This work demonstrates the good reception of the learning experience by the participants. Interprofessional simulations are great learning tools, although weaknesses were found that could be improved with adequate planning by the educators.

The intellectual foundation of modern experiential learning theory owes much of its roots to John Dewey’s educational philosophy. In his seminal 1916 work, Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education, Dewey argued that human knowledge and education are rooted in inquiry, which in turn is rooted in human experience. His ideas, along with those of Jean Piaget, formed the basis of D. A. Kolb’s 1984 book Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development. Kolb’s theory of learning, which he formulated to better understand student learning styles, became the starting point for the debate on the use of experiential learning. Kolb introduced a four-stage cycle to explain learning: concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. His framework has been adopted to investigate how learning occurs inside the classroom. However, numerous criticisms have been leveled against Kolb’s learning styles approach. One type of criticism focuses on the importance of learning style on student learning, and another focuses on the construct validity, internal validity, and reliability of Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory (LSI). There are several avenues for improving the use of experiential learning techniques, such as the integration of service-learning into the classroom and an institutional commitment to designing a complete curriculum.
