Abstract Background Although femur fractures in children are rare, they are the most common fractures in need of hospitalization. We sought to describe the epidemiology and treatment of pediatric femur fractures recorded in the Swedish Fracture Register (SFR). We also studied the relationship between femur fractures, age, sex, fracture pattern, injury mechanism, seasonal variation and treatment. Methods This nationwide observational register study was based on the pediatric part of the SFR. We included all patients < 16 years of age who were registered in the SFR from 2015 to 2018. Results Of the 709 femur fractures, 454 (64%) occurred in boys. Sixty-two of these fractures were proximal (9%), 453 shaft (64%) and 194 distal (27%). A bimodal age distribution peak was observed in boys aged 2–3 and 16–19 years. In contrast, the age distribution among girls was evenly distributed. Younger children were mainly injured by a fall, whereas older children sustained their fracture because of traffic accidents. Non-surgical treatment prevailed among younger children; however, prevalence of surgical treatment increased with age. Conclusions We found a lower ratio between boys and girls (1.8:1) compared to earlier studies. The bimodal age distribution was seen only in boys. Falls were the most common injury in younger children, whereas traffic-related accidents were the most common in adolescents. With age, there was a corresponding increase in surgical treatment.

IntroductionThe growing number of children suffering polytrauma from traffic accidents dictates the expansion of the indications for osteosynthesis. Elastic-stable intramedullary osteosynthesis (ESIN) is the optimum treatment of fractures of long bones in children.MethodsClosed intramedullary osteosynthesis of diaphyseal femur fractures with flexible nails was performed in 74 patients (76 fractures) during 2006–2010. The patients were children ages 1–8 years. Titanium elastic nails (TEN) (Synthesis, Switzerland) were used in the procedures. AO Foundation recommendations were adhered to when selecting the size of the implant (i.e., diameter approximately 1/3 the diameter of the femur medullar canal at its narrowest part).ResultsThere was a prevalence (n = 53) of simple fractures (Ð3 by AO classification) in this group of patients. Sixteen children had Ð2-type fractures, five with spiral (Ð1), and two with slanting (Ð2) fractures. There were no type Ð1 or Ð3 complex fractures in this group. Good functional results of closed intramedullary osteosynthesis with TEN at diaphyseal fractures of the femur in children with isolated and associated damages were achieved. There were no post-operative complications. This method provided stability of osteosynthesis, which allows activating patients in the short- term, i.e., during the post-operative period.ConclusionTreating femur fractures in children with ESIN provides optimum treatment of polytrauma. Osteosynthesis without exposure to the area of damage, and the early activation of children can prevent infectious complications and contractures.

Objective To describe indications, different modalities and results of surgical treatment of femur fractures in children. Patients and methods This is a retrospective study from January 2004 to December 2013 in the pediatric surgery department of Lomé Sylvanius Olympio teaching hospital, from the records of patients aged 0-15 years with femur fractured treated surgically. Results There were 66.1% (39 cases) of shaft fractures of which 53.57% localized in the middle third. Of the 33.9% (20 cases) of the lower extremity fracture, epiphyseal growth fractures accounted for 13 cases including seven (7) for type II among Salter-Harris classification. The indications were: femoral fracture occurred in the context of multiple trauma (4 cases), patients over 11 years (40 cases), failure of conservative treatment (2 patients), epiphyseal growth fractures of the distal femur after failure of conservative treatment (12 patients) and an epiphyseal growth fracture type 4 of Salter and Harris where surgery was indicated immediately (1 case). The average time of surgical treatment was 32 days. The elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) was made in 66.1% of patients, the plate in 18.6%, the pinning in 11.9% and screwing in 3.4%. The average duration of hospital stay was 45.16 days. Removal of osteosynthesis material was performed in 38 patients or 64.4% of cases. The average time of this removal was 8 months. Conclusion The methods of the most widely used surgical treatment are open ESIN because of the long waiting patients associated with very limited financial resources. This method has real advantages and should be encouraged in our communities by improving the technical facilities and living conditions of the population.

This retrospective study examines the relationship between auditory steady-state evoked potential (ASSEP) thresholds determined in infancy and subsequently obtained behavioral hearing levels in children with normal hearing or varying degrees of sensorineural hearing loss. Overall, the results from 211 subjects showed that the two test techniques were highly correlated, with Pearson r values exceeding .95 at each of the audiometric test frequencies between 500 and 4000 Hz. Analysis of the findings for babies with significant hearing loss (moderate to profound levels) showed similar threshold relationships to those obtained in previous studies involving adults and older children. The results for infants with normal or near-normal hearing did, however, differ from those reported for older subjects, with behavioral thresholds typically 10 to 15 dB better than would have been predicted from their ASSEP levels.

The article present results of the authors’ study of the social well-being of the Russian population – an assessment of the population’s health and attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle amid viral pandemic, based on materials of the Rosstat sample surveys of 2019 and 2020 and data from the All-Russian survey conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) on 27 September 2020. The authors described the transformation of living conditions in the light of the complex epidemiological situation and the increase in coronavirus cases among the population. Changes in the health status of the Russian population were analyzed by individual age groups. The article assesses the strength of the relationship between the social well-being of the population by selected socio-demographic groups and the period of self-isolation, quarantine, or other restrictions imposed during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. To solve this problem, demographic and socio-economic characteristics of respondents are presented, the distribution of responses according to the survey results is estimated, and the most signifcant factor characteristics are selected. Respondent replies were grouped according to the selected questions, including in the territorial context (by federal districts). To determine the strength of the relationship between the respondents' answers to the question and their gender or age distribution, the coefcients of mutual conjugacy and rank correlation coefcients were calculated and analyzed.Analysis of the changes in the social well-being of population for 2019–2020 and the assessment of the strength of the relationship between the discussed indicators (gender, wealth, territory of residence) revealed the parameters that form the differences. After comparing the health status of the Russian population as a whole and by age groups in 2019 and 2020 based on data of sample survey on population health status, the following points were identifed. With the expected assessment of the population health status in the age distribution (deterioration in the older ages and better health in the younger ones), it also remains unchanged that more than half of the respondents characterize their health status as «very good» and «good». Noteworthy is the fact that the assessment of the health status of the Russian population has improved during the year. It is evidenced from changes in the structure of respondent replies, even though population health status survey of 2020 was conducted in the middle of lockdown amid the continuing negative trends in coronavirus morbidity and mortality.

Three cases of newborn tetany are described, pointing out the relationship between dietary phosphate load and the manifestations of this disease. An additional three newborn infants are described who showed other symptomatology than tetany in association with dietary phosphate load. [See Table 1 in Source Pdf]. Data concerning diet, cause of death and degree of parathyroid hyperplasia are tabulated in eight newborns who were found to have parathyroid hyperplasia at autopsy. Similar data are tabulated on eight newborns and five older children who were found to have normal parathyroid glands at autopsy. Several other factors possibly involved in newborn tetany and newborn parathyroid hyperplasia are discussed. The importance of measuring serum inorganic P in the differential diagnosis of neonatal distress is pointed out.

Abstract. The lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) plays a major role in both working memory (WM) and response inhibition (RI), which are fundamental for various cognitive abilities. We explored the relationship between these LPFC functions during childhood development by examining the performance of two groups of children in visuospatial and auditory WM tasks and a go/no-go RI task. In the younger children (59 5- and 6-year-olds), performance on the visuospatial WM task correlated significantly with that in the auditory WM task. Furthermore, accuracy in these tasks correlated significantly with performance on the RI task, particularly in the no-go trials. In contrast, there were no significant correlations among those tasks in older children (92 8- and 9-year-olds). These results suggest that functional neural systems for visuospatial WM, auditory WM, and RI, especially those in the LPFC, become fractionated during childhood, thereby enabling more efficient processing of these critical cognitive functions.
