Abstract Background While there is increasing evidence for the relevance of psychosocial variables such as dental fear or psychological attachment in dentistry, much less is known about the mechanisms that determine the strength of those associations. One potential moderator is the occurrence of a comorbid chronic disease such as psoriasis, which is linked to relevant disease parameters such as periodontal inflammation. The aim of the study was to test a moderation model of the relationship between dental fear, psychological attachment and psoriasis on periodontal health. Methods A total of 201 patients (100 with psoriasis, 101 without psoriasis) were included in a questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study. Dental status was measured with the Community Periodontal Index (CPI), dental fear was measured with the Hierarchical Anxiety Questionnaire (HAQ), and psychological attachment was measured with the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ). In addition to the examination of main effects, bootstrapping-based analyses were conducted to test the moderating influence of psychological attachment on the association between CPI and dental fear, gain moderated by group (with vs. without psoriasis). Results Controlling for several covariates, higher CPI scores were associated with higher levels of dental fear only in individuals without psoriasis under conditions of higher levels of psychological attachment anxiety and lower levels of attachment avoidance. Conclusion In individuals without psoriasis, psychological attachment can moderate the association between periodontal health and dental fear. This may provide a useful framework for reducing dental fear through interventions on the level of the dentist-patient relationship.

Comorbid conditions play a pivotal role in rheumatoid arthritis management and outcomes. We estimated the percentage of comorbid illness among rheumatoid arthritis patients and explored the relationship between this comorbidity and different prescriptions. A cross-sectional study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis in three centers in Saudi Arabia was carried out. Comorbidity and antirheumatoid medication regimens prescribed were recorded on a specially designed Performa. The association between comorbidity and different drugs was analyzed. A total of 340 patients were included. The most comorbidities were hypertension 122 (35.9%), diabetes 105 (30.9%), osteoporosis 88 (25.8%), and dyslipidemia in 66 (19.4). The most common drug prescribed was prednisolone in 275 (80.8%) patients followed by methotrexate in 253 (74.4%) and biological therapy in 142 (41.5%) patients. Glucocorticoids were prescribed considerably more frequently in hypertensive and diabetic patients as well as in patients with osteoporosis and dyslipidemia. Most patients with rheumatoid arthritis suffered from comorbid diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the majority of the world's population. Currently, more emphasis has been directed towards the combined influence of education level, lifestyle instead of regular risk factors in dealing with chronic illnesses. The present paper is to assess the periodontal health status, education level and lifestyle in outpatient department of Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Sciences and Research (GNIDSR), Sodepur, Kolkata, West Bengal. OBJECTIVE:The objective of the study was to evaluate patient's education level & life style with periodontal disease. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 245 subjects of 35-44 years age group over two months period. Subjects were interviewed by the questionnaire and Modified Community Periodontal Index was recorded. RESULT: The statistical analysis shows significant decrease in periodontal health status when education level increased. Also the prevalence of periodontitis with a healthy lifestyle is significantly lower when compared with an unhealthy lifestyle. CONCLUSION:There is a strong association of lifestyle and education level with periodontal health.

Introduction: Periodontitis is chronic disease leading to tooth loss. Oral hygiene practices combined with regular dental examinations keep oral cavity disease free and maintain periodontal health. The primary objective was to find out the prevalence of periodontal disease of patients measured by the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index and Community Periodontal Index. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in department of Periodontics of a tertiary care dental hospital from April to June 2019 after obtaining ethical clearance and informed consent. Participants were recruited by convenience sampling and 183 sample size was calculated. Proforma included demographics, Simplified Oral Hygiene Index, Community Periodontal Index, body mass index, and smoking status. Data were entered in Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23 and descriptive statistics were presented as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. Results: Prevalence of periodontal disease corresponding to loss of attachment 1, 2, 3, and 4 was found to in 104 (56.83%) participants. Simplified Oral Hygiene Index score was 1.67±0.89 with “fair” status in majority 114 (62.30%). Gingivitis (Community Periodontal Index 1, 2) was seen in 136 (74.32%). The mean age was 36.37±14.43 years of which 92 (50.27%) were female but smoking was more in males. Conclusions: This study suggests deteriorating periodontal health related to age, sex, oral hygiene, smoking, and BMI. As updated information on oral and periodontal health in Nepal is limited, this assessment would help the national policy makers on oral health intervention measures to prevent periodontitis and develop future programs to improve oral health.

Cyberbullying, a form of bullying with the use of digital technologies, has become increasingly common among teenagers. It can take place on social media, messaging platforms, gaming platforms, and previous studies provide several lines of evidence that no relationship is found between cyberbullying and the influences of introversion and extraversion. To further investigate the impact of cyberbullying, this research was conducted with the aim of finding relationship between introversion, extraversion and cyberbullying among teenagers in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey questionnaire that contained questions for assessing both the cyberbullying behavior and the personality of participants. Eysenck’s Personality Inventory (EPI)1 was used in this survey to assess the type of personality in teenagers. The results showed that there was no correlation between cyberbullying and personality.

Background: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and periodontal disease are common disorders associated with diabetes and cardiometabolic risk. Recently, some studies have revealed the effect of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) on gingival inflammation. This cross-sectional study attempts to assess the periodontal health status and systemic inflammation of women receiving medical treatment for PCOS and women newly diagnosed with PCOS.Methods: A total of 60 participants comprising 30 newly diagnosed patients with PCOS (PCOS-N), 30 patients with PCOS on medical treatment (PCOS-MT) were examined. Periodontal parameters were recorded and compared. Results: This study resulted that the women with newly diagnosed PCOS may have increased prevalence and likelihood for periodontitis, with higher measures of periodontal inflammation and breakdown than those on medical treatment for PCOS.Conclusions: In PCOS females, there is an alteration of various hormone levels in the body. These hormones might act on gingival cells by changing the effectiveness of the epithelial barrier to bacterial injury or by affecting the collagen maintenance and repair.

Bisphenols (BPs) are commonly known plastifiers that are widely used in industry. The knowledge about the impact of BPs on thyroid function is scarce. Proper thyroid functioning is especially important for women of reproductive age, as hypothyroidism affects fertility, pregnancy outcomes and the offspring. There are no studies analyzing the influence of BPs on thyroid function and volume in non-pregnant young women. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the relationship between bisphenol A and its 10 analogs (BPS, BPC, BPE, BPF, BPG, BPM, BPP, BPZ, BPFL, and BPBP) on thyroid function and volume in women of reproductive age. Inclusion criteria were: female sex, age 18–40 years. Exclusion criteria were history of any thyroid disease, pharmacotherapy influencing thyroid function, pregnancy or puerperium, and diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease during this study. Venous blood was drawn for measurement of thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine, thyroid peroxidase antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies, BPs. Urine samples were analyzed for: ioduria and BPs. Ultrasound examination of thyroid gland was performed. One hundred eighty participants were included into the study. A negative correlation was found between urine BPC and the thyroid volume (R = −0.258; p = 0.0005). Patients with detected urine BPC presented smaller thyroid glands than those with not-detected urine BPC (p = 0.0008). A positive correlation was found between TSH and urine BPC (R = 0.228; p = 0.002). Patients with detected urine BPC presented higher concentrations of TSH versus those with not-detected urine BPC (p = 0.003). There were no relationships between any of serum BPs as well as the other urine BPs and thyroid function and its volume. The only BP that demonstrated the relationship between thyroid function and its volume was BPC, probably because of its chemical structure that most resembles thyroxine. Exposure to this BP may result in the development of hypothyroidism that could have a negative impact on pregnancy and the offspring.
