Abstract Background The widespread use of the internet and other digital resources has contributed to the escalation of plagiarism among medical students and students of other healthcare professions. Concerns were raised by faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q), a branch of Weill Cornell Medicine of Cornell University in New York, who had been observing plagiarism in students’ assignments. Methods To identify the extent of plagiarism practices and their contributing factors, a two-phase mixed-method research study was conducted, comprising a survey administered in 2013, followed by longitudinal interventions, and a second survey in 2017 to measure the impact of the interventions. Results By Phase II, overall observed plagiarism incidents per year decreased from 44 to 28%, and the number of faculty who observed no plagiarism incidents increased significantly from 12 to 37%. The faculty concerned about student plagiarism decreased by 33% [53.1 to 20%] between Phase I and Phase II. Conclusion When students are provided with information regarding what constitutes plagiarism and their institution’s policy in response to plagiarism incidents, they are less likely to engage in such practices.

It is with sadness that I substitute for Dr. Debuskey today in presenting Dr. Harry Gordon-whom we both admire so much-with the C. Anderson Aldrich Award in Child Development. We both have felt the impact of Dr. Gordon's teaching and attitudes about children (and, in turn, are indebted to Dr. C. Anderson Aldrich, whom we honor today). I wish to read to you the biographical sketch which Dr. Debuskey prepared for this occasion. In a letter to Mr. Sehring regarding this sketch, Dr. Debuskey wrote, "I have deep affection for Dr. Gordon and find it difficult to restrict my comments to the cold facts." I, too, have this difficulty and feel a kinship with his comments, which follow. "Dr. Harry H. Gordon is truly a man of great versatility. He has engaged, with vigor and enthusiasm and uncommon effectiveness, in many areas of compelling interest, among which, of course, eminently resides child development. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on August 4, 1906, in a family traditionally devoted to scholarship, service, and concern for others. He is a choicescion of that heritage. He was educated at Cornell University and received his basic pediatric training at Montefiore, New Haven, and the New York hospitals. He encountered and was deeply influenced by several of our distinguished professional pioneers. "Dr. Gordon, early in his career, engaged in fundamental research on the nutritional developmental needs of premature and neonatal infants. This beautifully designed project, recorded in an exciting series of articles, created the scientific foundation for understanding the growth and development of a child in this critical, initial stage in his life.

Clearance phase at signalized crosswalks is an important parameter of pedestrians’ safety because it helps them to complete the crossing before the green signal for vehicles. However, there is the issue of pedestrian decision as to whether to cross if they arrive at the crosswalk during the clearance phase, which represents a violation in many countries. Due to the proof that pedestrian violations multiply the risk of traffic accidents, in this study, the tendency of pedestrians to commit violations during the clearance time has been researched. With the aim of proposing the design of the pedestrian traffic lights, which could decrease the frequency of pedestrian violations, the comparison of pedestrians behaviour at crosswalks with and without a countdown timer during the clearance time was made, based on the data collected in the video recording. Chi square independency test showed that there is a statistically significant difference in the behaviour of pedestrians during the clearance time, depending on the existence of the timer, as well as the fact that pedestrians behave in a safer manner if there is no clearance time shown on the timer. The total delay rate on the roadway during the red signal, which was the consequence of starting the crossing during the clearance time or subsequent violations, was 1.3 times higher at the crosswalks with the countdown timer. This research was unique because for the first time, two-phase pedestrian crossings on the roadway with the median refuge island in the sense of clearance time were analysed, in spite of the previous proof that pedestrians are more likely to commit violations during the red signal in that kind of roadway. Another novelty in the research was pedestrians following till the end of crossing, due to the possibility of subsequent violations. With the means of binary logistic regression, different factors which affect pedestrians’ behaviour during the clearance time have been determined and they differ depending on the existence of the timer. At the pedestrian crosswalks with the timer, contributing factors have been determined, such as gender, the number of waiting pedestrians, distractions, arrival time, and age. If there is no timer, the contributing factors are the following: the number of crossing pedestrians, distractions, group, position of pedestrians in relation to the vehicle, the number of traffic lanes, and age. Based on the obtained results, a new design of the pedestrian traffic lights was proposed.

2570 Background: Ixabepilone (IX) is a semisynthetic epothilone B analog with activity in patients (pts) with taxane refractory cancer. Two phase III clinical trials in breast cancer (BC) and a phase II study in ovarian cancer (OC) have recently been completed. Pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) is used for the treatment of platinum refractory OC and has activity in patients with metastatic BC. Methods: We have completed enrollment of a phase I study of PLD IV and ixabepilone IV over 3 hours. 18 pts with metastatic cancer (10 BC and 8 OC) with median age 51 were enrolled from 1/13/06 to 12/22/06. A total of 60 cycles has been administered to date. 3 OC patients enrolled at dose level 3 have not yet completed 2 cycles of treatment and are not yet evaluable. Results: Dose limiting toxicities (DLT) based on toxicities experienced during the first 2 cycles is provided in the table below. Adverse events (AE) occurring in any cycle were: Grade 4 AE: neutropenia < 7 days (1 pt). Grade 3 AE: palmar plantar erythrodysesthesia (PPE) (4), mucositis (3), infection (2), fatigue (2), neutropenia (2), thrombocytopenia (2), anemia (1), neuropathy (1), bilirubin (1). Non-hematological grade 2 AEs included: mucositis (4), PPE (3), infection (2), neuropathy (2), rash (3), pain (3), fever (1), myalgias (1), and anorexia (1). Responses so far for 10 BC pts are PR (1) SD (3) PD (6) and for 5 OC pts are PR (1) SD (2) PD (2). Updated results will be presented. Conclusions: Although the recommended phase II dose when given every 3 weeks is 30 mg/m2 for PLD and 32 mg/m2 for IX by our criteria, PPE and mucositis became problematic when treatment was continued beyond 2 cycles. We are therefore exploring a 4 week PLD schedule, evaluating IX given either every 4 weeks (as shown) or weekly (on days 1, 8, and 15). A phase II trial of the combination in platinum refractory OC will be initiated upon completion of the phase I. Supported by N01-CM-62204 [Table: see text] [Table: see text]

This study assesses the efficacy of the treatment approach implemented in the Bern Crisis Intervention Program, where particular emphasis is placed on the remediation of suicide ideation and suicidal behavior, and depression, fear, and phobia are generally considered to be contributing factors. Four questionnaires addressing psychopathology, emotional well-being, social anxiety, and personality were administered prior to and after the treatment of 51 patients over a period of 2 to 3 weeks. The reduction of symptoms contributing to suicidal ideation and behavior was interpreted as indirect evidence of an antisuicidal effect of the program. Significant improvements were found in the psychopathology ratings, with depression and anxiety showing the largest reductions. The impact on personality and social phobia, however, was only moderate, and on average patients still exhibited symptoms after attending the program. This residual symptomatology points to the necessity of introducing a two-step therapy approach of intensive intervention targeted at the precipitating causes of the crisis, augmented by long-term therapy to treat underlying problems.

This paper describes the conversion of an introductory computing course to the blended learning model at a small, public liberal arts college. Blended learning significantly reduces face-to-face instruction by incorporating rich, online learning experiences. To assess the impact of blended learning on students, survey data was collected at the midpoint and end of semester, and student performance on the final exam was compared in traditional and blended learning sections. To capture faculty perspectives on teaching blended learning courses, written reflections and discussions from faculty teaching blended learning sections were analyzed. Results indicate that student performance in the traditional and blended learning sections of the course were comparable and that students reported high levels of interaction with their instructor. Faculty teaching the course share insights on transitioning to the blended learning format.
