Abstract This paper presents the possibilities of forming the microstructure as well as mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of Cu-3Ti alloy (wt.%) in thermal and thermomechanical processes that are a combination of homogenising treatment, hot and cold working, solution treatment and ageing. Phase composition of the alloy following various stages of processing it into the specified semi-finished product was being determined too. It was demonstrated that the application of cold plastic deformation between solution treatment and ageing could significantly enhance the effect of hardening of the Cu-3Ti alloy without deteriorating its electrical conductivity. It was found that for the investigated alloy the selection of appropriate conditions for homogenising treatment, hot and cold deformation as well as solution treatment and ageing enables to obtain the properties comparable to those of beryllium bronzes.

5083 aluminum alloy, due to moderate strength, good thermal conductivity and formability, is an ideal structural material for car production. Influence of cold rolling process on microstructures and mechanical properties of 5083 aluminum alloys is significant and research hotspots. In this paper, cold deformation and annealing processes on grains, tensile properties and anisotropies of 5083 alloy sheets were studied. Results showed that incomplete recrystallization occured on 5083 alloy sheets when annealing temperature was at 300°C. The degree of recrystallization increased slightly with the cold deformation raised from 30% to 50% and varied slightly with prolonged annealing time from 2h to 4h. Furthermore, fully recrystallization occurred on 5083 alloy sheets at the annealing temperature above 320°C. Tensile strength of 5083 alloy sheets reduced significantly when the annealing temperature was raised from 300°C to 320°C, while it varied slightly when the annealing temperature continued to rise to 380°C.

The occurrence of abnormal grain growth (AGG) of austenite during annealing is a serious problem in steels with carbide and/or nitride particles, which should be avoided from a viewpoint of mechanical properties. The effects of cold deformation prior to annealing on the occurrence of AGG have been investigated. It was found that the temperature range of the occurrence of AGG is shifted toward a low temperature region by cold deformation, and that the shift increases with the increase of the reduction ratio. The lowered AGG occurrence temperature is attributed to the fine and near-equilibrium AlN particles that are precipitated in the cold-deformed steel, which is readily dissolved during annealing. In contrast, coarse and non-equilibrium AlN particles precipitated in the undeformed steel, which is resistant to dissolution during annealing.

In order to form the necessary data base on platinum and platinum metals, certain tests were carried out on platinum samples of different purity of 99.5%, 99.9% and 99.99%. The degree of cold deformation, annealing temperature and chemical assays were tested as well as their impact on the mechanical properties of platinum. The Vickers hardness (HV) values were determined with different deformation degree, starting from annealing temperatures for platinum of different purity and tensile strength (Rm), flow limit (Rp0,2) and elongation (A) in the function of annealing temperatures and annealing time at a constant deformation degree.

Precipitation strengthening is an effective approach to strengthen high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with a simple face-center-cubic (FCC) structure. In this work, CoCrFeNiMo0.2 HEAs were prepared by powder metallurgy, followed by cool rolling and subsequent heat-treatment at different temperatures. The effects of cold working and annealing on microstructure and mechanical properties have been investigated. Results show the fine and dispersed (Cr, Mo)-rich σ phase with a topologically close-packed structure precipitated in the FCC matrix after the prior cold deformation process, which enhanced the mechanical property of the CoCrFeNiMo0.2 alloy. The HEA annealed at 600 °C for 48 h had a tensile strength of 1.9 GPa but an elongation which decreased to 8%. The HEA annealed at 800 °C for 12 h exhibited a tensile strength of 1.2 GPa and an elongation of 31%. These outstanding mechanical properties can be attributed to precipitation strengthening and fine-grain strengthening.

Pre-cold rolling with the reduction of 15% was employed on Mg-8Gd-3Y-0.5Zr (wt.%) (GW83K) alloy in different initial states: as-extruded (state 1) and extruded followed by annealing (state 2) with the aim to investigate the effects on microstructure and mechanical properties. Microstructure observation revealed that there are more amounts of mechanical twins in the alloy in state 2 than that of the alloy in state 1 after cold rolling, which indicates the different deformation mechanisms. Further investigation through EBSD has elucidated the grain boundary structure and types of twins in the alloys. Pre-cold deformation greatly promotes the age hardening response and the peak aging time at 200°C was found to be nearly 12h for the alloy in both state 1 and state 2, which were about 24h and 80h less than that of their non-deformed counterparts, respectively. Tensile tests at temperatures lower than 250°C showed that the alloy in state 1 has a predominant mechanical property than that of the alloy in state 2, while at 300°C, it displayed a reverse tendency.

A series of Ti-Mo-Sn alloys with different Mo contents from 7% to 15% (wt. %) were prepared, and the effects of Mo content and thermo-mechanical treatment on their microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the β to α martensite transformation can be effectively suppressed with increasing Mo content. After cold rolling treatment, superior mechanical properties and low modulus were achieved in Ti-8Mo-4Sn alloy, with tensile strength of 1108MPa, yield strength of 1003MPa and low Youngs modulus of 53GPa. The influence of severe cold deformation on the macrostructure and mechanical properties was discussed based on the characterization of X-Ray diffraction and mechanical tests. It was demonstrated that the cold rolling induced fine α martensite and high density dislocations lead to the high strength of the Ti-Mo-Sn alloys. The fine α martensite as well as the β matrix with low stability guarantee low Youngs modulus.
