Current design process can be simplified and accelerated, if computer simulation based on finite element method (FEM) is used. FEM numerical calculations of different wheels of railway wheelsets are investigated in the Department of Railway Engineering. The justification for undertaking this issue is that there is no methodology in the design of railway wheelsets both in Poland and abroad. In order to assess the calculation model, experimental tests of static loads (due to carriage weight) and thermal loads (due to braking) have been run. The results of these tests have been compared with the results of numerical analysis. The proposed calculation model has been compared with the results of test stand investigation. Comparison of the results has confirmed the correctness of the proposed discrete model and calculation algorithm. In the framework of the common scientific-didactic projects of Railway Engineering Department and Central Rail Research Institute in Moscow and producer of railway wheelsets-BONATRANS a.s. in Bohumin (Czech Republic), the method was worked out, and the experimental researches were conducted on specialists certified stands for railway wheelset researches (Sitarz, M., Bizoń, K., and Chruzik, K. Current design processes can be simplified and accelerated if computer simulation based on finite element method (FEM) is used. FEM numerical calculations of different wheels of railway wheelsets are investigated in the Department of Railway Engineering. The justification for undertaking this issue is that there is no methodology in the design of railway wheelsets both in Poland and abroad; there is no possibility of optimizing wheelsets' construction characteristics depending on manufacturing process and service parameters. The analysis of this problem has made possible: (a) comparison of software used so far in strain calculation of railway wheelsets; (b) elaboration of design methodology for railway wheelsets; (c) increase in durability of railway wheelsets; (d) increase in the safety of rail transport; (e) decrease in manufacturing and service costs of railway wheelsets.

The paper concerns the numerical analysis of the influence for three different of welding heat source inclinations on the weld pool shape and mechanical properties of the resulting joint. Numerical analysis is based on the experimental tests of single-side welding of two sheets made of X5CrNi18-10 stainless steel. The joint is made using a laser welding heat source. Experimental test was performed for one heating source inclination. As a part of the work metallographic tests are performed on which the quality of obtained joints are determined. Numerical calculations are executed in Abaqus FEA. The same geometrical model is assumed as in the experiment. Material model takes into account changing with temperature thermophysical properties of austenitic steel. Modeling of the motion of heating source is performed in additional subroutine. The welding source parameters are assumed in accordance with the welding process parameters. Numerical calculations were performed for three different inclinations of the source. One inclination is consistent with experimental studies. The performed numerical calculations allowed to determine the temperature field, shape of welding pool as well as deformations and stress state in welded joint. The obtained results are compared to results of the experiment.

Airworthiness standards of Korea recommend verifying structural safety by experimental tests and analytical methods, owing to the development of analysis technology. In this study, we propose a methodology to verify the structural safety of aircraft components based on airworthiness requirements using an analytical method. The structural safety and fatigue integrity of a linear actuator for flap control of aircraft was evaluated through numerical analysis. The static and fatigue analyses for the given loads obtained from the multibody dynamics analysis were performed using the finite element method. Subsequently, the margin of safety and vulnerable area were acquired and the feasibility of the structural safety evaluation using the analytical method was confirmed. The proposed numerical analysis method in this study can be adopted as an analytical verification methodology for the airworthiness standards of civilian aircraft in Korea.

The paper presents a numerical analysis of corrugated steel plate (CSP) bridge with reinforced concrete (RC) relieving slab under static loads. Calculations were made based on the finite element method using Abaqus software. Two computation models were used; in the first one, RC slab was used, and the other was without it. The effect of RC slab to deformations of CSP shell was determined. Comparing the computational results from two numerical models, it can be concluded that when the relieving slab is applied, substantial reductions in displacements, stresses, bending moments and axial thrusts are achieved. Relative reductions of displacements were in the range of 53–66%, and stresses of 73–82%. Maximum displacements and bending moments were obtained at the shell crown, and maximum stresses and axial thrusts at the quarter points. The calculation results were also compared to the values from experimental tests. The course of computed displacements and stresses is similar to those obtained from experimental tests, although the absolute values were generally higher than the measured ones. Results of numerical analyses can be useful for bridge engineering, with particular regard to bridges and culverts made from corrugated steel plates for the range of necessity of using additional relieving elements.

Introduction. Today thin-walled structures are widely used in the construction industry. The analysis of their rigidity, strength and stability is a relevant task which is of particular practical interest. The article addresses a method for the numerical analysis of stability of an axially-compressed i-beam rod subjected to the axial force and the bimoment. An axially compressed i-beam rod is the subject of the study. Materials and methods. Femap with NX Nastran were chosen as the analysis toolkit. Axially compressed cantilever steel rods having i-beam profiles and different flexibility values were analyzed under the action of the bimoment. The steel class is C245. Analytical data were applied within the framework of the Euler method and the standard method of analysis pursuant to Construction Regulations 16.13330 to determine the numerical analysis method. Results. The results of numerical calculations are presented in geometrically and physically nonlinear settings. The results of numerical calculations of thin-walled open-section rods, exposed to the axial force and the bimoment, are compared with the results of analytical calculations. Conclusions. Given the results of numerical calculations, obtained in geometrically and physically nonlinear settings, recommendations for the choice of a variable density FEM model are provided. The convergence of results is estimated for different diagrams describing the steel behavior. The bearing capacity of compressed cantilever rods, exposed to the bimoment, is estimated for the studied flexibility values beyond the elastic limit. A simplified diagram, describing the steel behaviour pursuant to Construction regulations 16.13330, governing the design of steel structures, is recommended to ensure the due regard for the elastoplastic behaviour of steel. The numerical analysis method, developed for axially-compressed rods, is to be applied to axially-compressed thin-walled open-section rods. National Research Moscow State University is planning to conduct a series of experiments to test the behaviour of axially-compressed i-beams exposed to the bimoment and the axial force. Cantilever i-beams 10B1 will be used in experimental testing.

The evaluation of ship resistance is of paramount importance having a decisive impact on the economic performances and efficiency depending on mission. If new IMO requirements through the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) are taken into account the necessity to have more and more accurate tools capable to consider the influences of different parameters became mandatory. The availability of towing tank facilities and the full scale trials are the practical means in order to be able to confirm the accuracy of theoretical formulations and to define the limits of CFD applications. Based on the results of the towing tank tests, a direct comparison with the results provided by classical methods and CFD computations can be systematically can be performed. On the other hand, the influences of the modifications operated on the fore part of the ship aretheoretically evaluated and compared with the towing tank results. Consequently, the paper is focused on the comparison of the results evaluated using different tools which have been carried out for a Chemical Tanker built by Constanta Shipyard Romania.

In the near future, the progress in design of bases and foundations of buildings and structures will depend on the use of modern numerical calculation methods since the opportunities to improve the building regulations are almost exhausted. This article aims to demonstrate the capabilities of numerical calculations with the use of modern soil models on the example of designing the foundation of a standard oil storage tank for crude oil and petroleum products. This article provides a comparison of the results of the base settlement of a 30,000 m tank calculations made in accordance with the current standards of design and the finite elements method with the use of the PLAXIS software package. In particular, the following numerical calculations with the use of modern soil models have been performed: 1) Hardening Soil model, HS; 2) Hardening Soil small strain model, HSs. It is shown that the use of these models in the presence of the required amount of baseline data can significantly refine the calculations performed according to normative methods. Considering the obtained results, the possibility of optimizing design solutions when selecting the type of foundation of a tank was determined.

Paper present the experimental and numerical analysis of biomass photopyrolysis process. The experimental tests is performed on the solar pyrolysis installation, designed in Institute of Thermal Technology, Gliwice. It consist of the copper reactor powered by artificial light simulating sun. The paper shows the result of the solar pyrolysis of wood. The yield of the main fraction as a function of the process temperature is presented. Additionally the gas composition is determined. The numerical model is prepared in the Ansys Fluent 18.2 software, which allow at the same time for capturing geometry of the real system and easy change of input data. The results indicate that both the product yields (liquid, solid and gaseous) and gas components shares are strongly influenced by pyrolysis parameters and feedstock composition.
