DRASTIC model has been used to map groundwater vulnerability to pollution in many areas. Since this method is used in different places without any changes, it cannot consider the effects of pollution type and characteristics. Therefore, the method needs to be calibrated and corrected for that aquifer and specific land use. In this research, by correcting the rates of DRASTIC parameters, one can assess the vulnerability potential to pollution more accurately. The new rates were computed using the relationships between DRASTIC INDEX (DI) corresponding to land use and to nitrate concentration in groundwater. The proposed methodology was applied in deltaic region of alluvial aquifer of Volinaios catchment located in the northwestern part of Peloponnesus. In order to determine the quality of the ground waters, either for watering or irrigating purposes, in the study area, a sampling was made. Correlation was used to find the relationship between the index and measured pollution in each point and therefore, to modify the rates. The results showed that the modified DRASTIC is better than the original method for nonpoint source pollution in agricultural areas.

This study deals with the intrinsic vulnerability of groundwater reservoirs to pollution, by the use of two models DRASTIC and GODS, this study is done by taking samples from 17 water resources of Malayer plain Aquifer area of southern Hamedan Province, Iran. 30 physicochemical parameters and heavy metals have been studied and vulnerability of this aquifer to the nitrate concentration, was determined. The study showed that results from DRASTIC were better than GODS in Assessment and Estimating groundwater vulnerability to pollution, also DRASTIC model has been corrected, and compared the ability of these two models in vulnerability zoning has been evaluated. According to high correlation between DRASTIC index and nitrate concentration, ranking and weighting of nitrate pollutant is inserted in the DRASTIC equation, and zoning map of DRASTIC method has been calibrated by nitrate concentration. By this method, vulnerability zoning is determined between very low to very high, which shows the increase of DRASTIC index by nitrate concentration. DRASTIC parameters uncertainty has affected the zoning results in this method, but its calibration with nitrate concentration, gives more accurate vulnerability results.

Abstract In arid and semi-arid regions such as Iran, groundwater is more important for humans and ecosystems than surface water. Different models of groundwater vulnerability assessment can be used to better manage water resources. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the qualitative vulnerability of groundwater resources in the Birjand Plain aquifer using the DRASTIC model and 7 hydrogeological components. DRASTIC model was also modified by adding a land use component (MDRASTIC) based on Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) methods. After calculating the vulnerability index, the vulnerability of each method was mapped and the final index obtained from each method was classified into 4 different categories. Nitrate concentration was used to confirm the results and to analyze the sensitivity of a single parameter. Sensitivity analysis showed that the groundwater vulnerability is mainly affected by water depth and land use. To validate each of the models, their correlation with nitrate concentration was calculated and compared. To determine the correlation coefficient, simple linear regression method was performed and the Pearson and Spearman methods were used. According to the obtained Pearson correlation results, the DRASTIC, MDRASTIC, MDRASTIC-AHP, and MDRASTIC-FAHP models resulted in values of 0.550, 0.680, 0.778, and 0.794respectively. The results show a good correlation between the modified DRASTIC-FAHP model and nitrate concentration as an indicator of groundwater pollution.

Abstract This article describes the relationship between the land use purpose conversion and households’ livelihoods in suburban Vinh City, Nghe An province. In the survey with 170 households losing their land to build the VSIP Nghe An industrial park project, this article shows the double impact of this issue. (1) On the positive side, households’ quality of life in the current period shows a significant improvement. They are living in better conditions with more spacious houses and modern facilities than before. The average income of households increased by 900 USD than before. (2) On the negative side, the unemployment rate increases with women older than 35 years and men older than 40 years. Along with the improper use of compensation received, income sustainability is a doubt for these households’ future.

This study aims to analyze the relevant indicators of spending quality in measuring the quality of regional spending as well as the relationship between the quality of regional spending and the development performance of the regencies/cities of Banten Province. This study uses secondary data from the governance, financial and performance development of the districts/cities of Banten Province between 2009 – 2013. The Data are analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model (PLS–SEM) using SmartPLS software version 2.0 & SmartPLS version 3.0. The Results show that there are 21 indicators out of 40 indicators that are relevant in measuring the quality of the districts/cities spending in Banten Province. The change of the spending quality map from 2009 to 2013 shows that the quality of North Banten (Tangerang Regency, Tangerang City, Tangerang Selatan, Serang Regency, Serang City and Cilegon City) is better than South Banten (Pandeglang and Lebak). In addition, the estimation results from the model used indicate that the quality of the region spending of Banten Provinve has a positive relationship with the performance of development with the value of the indicator 0,678. Abstract The groundwater vulnerability assessment is normally applied to rural watersheds. However, urbanization modifies the hydrogeological processes. A modified DRASTIC model was adopted to establish a groundwater vulnerability map in an urbanized watershed. The modified DRASTIC model incorporated a land-use map, and net recharge was calculated taking into account the specificity of the urban hydrogeological system. The application of the proposed approach to the Mannouba watershed demonstrates that the groundwater vulnerability indexes range from 80 to 165. The study's results shows that 30 percent of the Mannouba watershed area has a high vulnerability index, 45 percent of the area has a medium index, and 25 percent of the study area has a low vulnerability index. To specify the effect of each DRASTIC factor on the calculated vulnerability index, sensitivity analyses were performed. Land use, topography, and soil media have an important theoretical weight greater than the effective weight. The impact of the vadose zone factor has the most important effective weight and affects the vulnerability index. The sensitivity assessment explored the variation in vulnerability after thematic layer removal. In this analysis, the removal of hydraulic conductivity and impact of vadose zone modified the vulnerability index. Groundwater vulnerability assessment in urbanized watersheds is difficult and has to consider the impact of urbanization in the hydrogeological parameters.

Many catchments in northern Algeria, including the coastal Mitidja Basin in the north central part of the country have been negatively affected by the deterioration of water quality in recent years. This study aims to discover the relationship between land use change and its impact on water quality in the coastal Mitidja river basin. Based on the data of land use and water quality in 2000, 2010 and 2017, the relationship between land use change and surface water quality index in the Mitidja Watershed was discussed through GIS and statistical analysis. The results show that the physical and chemical properties of the Mitidja river basin have obvious spatial heterogeneity. The water quality of upstream was better than that of downstream. There was a significant spatial relationship between the eight water quality indicators and three land use types, including urban residential land, agricultural land and vegetation. In most cases, settlements and agricultural land are the dominant factors leading to river pollution, and higher vegetation coverage helps to improve water quality. The regression model revealed that percentage of urban settlement area was a predictor for NH4-N, BOD5, COD, SS, PO4-P, DO and pH, while vegetation was a predictor for NO3-N. The analysis also showed that during this period, urban settlement areas increased sharply, which has a significant impact on water quality variables. Agricultural land only had a significant positive correlation with PO4-P. The results provide an effective way to evaluate river water quality, control water pollution and land use management by landscape pattern.

Abstract Groundwater has never been heavily relied on as a water source in Northern Iraq as it has been in the last two decades due to the rapid and often unplanned urbanization, industrial and agricultural projects. This paper attempts to present a concise groundwater vulnerability assessment of Rania basin to the local and regional planning authorities to ensure a more sustainable development in the area. The focus of the study is the Rania basin, which is a part of Dokan sub-basin in North East Iraq. The initial groundwater vulnerability assessment is mapped with standard DRASTIC model. It is then modified by adding “Lineament Density Index” to the original seven DRASTIC parameters due to the previously established close relationship between flow and yield of groundwater with lineament. The area is categorized into five vulnerability index zones of; very low (26%), low (32%), medium (31%), high (11%) and very high (0.012%). The modified model offeres a slightly different vulnerability classification of; very low (16.61%), low (35.45%), medium (30.32), high (17.57) and very high (0.05%). Measured Nitrate concentration is used to validate the assessment results. A progressive increase in nitrate concentration somehow reflects the different vulnerability zones identified by the DRASTIC models in the area. Samples of wet season show 15.96 mg/l, 17.68 mg/l and 20.1 mg/l for very low vulnerability, low vulnerability and medium vulnerability zones when classified by modified DRASTIC model.

Continuous efforts by governments to protect agricultural land has resulted in a mix of interests, policies, and outcomes. Through this paper, our aims are to evaluate provincial legislative frameworks across Canada and to improve our understanding of why some provincial legislative frameworks to protect agricultural land are better than others. In our study, we evaluated and compared the strength of ten provincial legislative frameworks for agricultural land use planning. Our results show that Québec, British Columbia, and Ontario have the strongest legislative frameworks to protect agricultural land, while the rest of Canada’s provinces have only a moderate to weak policy focus. This situation leaves most of Canada’s agricultural land highly exposed to more conversion and non-farm uses. The results also illustrate how key elements of a legislative framework interact, serving to either enhance or detract from overall strength of policy focus, thereby informing a strategic approach to policy development.

19649 Background: Quality of life (QoL) is an important endpoint measure in clinical cancer trials. We evaluated prospectively the effects of two cycles of chemotherapy (CT) on QoL and the relationship between QoL and survival in advanced NSCLC patients (pts). Methods: The short-form of the SF36 was completed prior to and after 2 cycles of chemotherapy. An ITT analysis was used; a score of 0 was assigned to those who died and the last observation was carried forward for those with missing data. Results: Fifty-nine pts consented to participate and pre-chemo evaluation was available for 58 pts. Of these 58, only 40 pts completed the study (4 died, 14 did not complete the post evaluation). There were 26M: 32F with a median age of 61±11 years. Fifty pts (86%) were stage 3B (pl. eff)/4 and 50pts (86%) were PS 0–1. Overall QoL decreased significantly from 100±19 to 91±36 after two cycles of chemotherapy (p=0.03). This decline was attributed to a significant decrease in the physical health subscale (p=0.001), with 36% of pts reporting a clinically significant decline of =2. No change in the mental health subscale was observed. The symptoms that had the most profound negative impact on the physical health subscale were: ‘easily get sick’ (54%), ‘increased pain’ (30%) and ‘decreased activities’ (27%). SD+PR occurred in 36 (62%) pts, whereas 22 (38%) pts had PD after two cycles of chemotherapy. No correlation was found between response to chemo and change in QoL. The median survival (15±6.8mo), of pts whose QoL score remained stable or improved (n=36) was significantly better than those (n=22) whose QoL decreased (9±3.2 mo) (p=0.01). Conclusions: QoL decreased following chemotherapy due to a decrease in the physical health subscale. Further studies are required to determine if training can improve physical health and thus QoL and survival. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

<p>This study aimed to determine the relationship between translators’ epistemological beliefs and gender on their Persian-to- English translation quality. To do so, a group of 53 MA translation students both male and female were selected, through convenient sampling to participate in this study. For data collection two instruments were employed: 1- Epistemic Beliefs Inventory (EBI) 2- Translation Test including a piece of poem. Regression analysis was also conducted to explore the interaction of epistemological beliefs and gender of translators on their translation quality. The findings indicated that there is no significant relationship between the components of epistemological beliefs and translation quality, except in one case that QL (quick learning) has a negative relationship with translation scores. Translators’ gender significantly affects the translation quality. An implication of the results is that males translate significantly better than females regarding the quality of translation. The interaction of translators’ epistemological beliefs and gender significantly affect the translation quality.</p>
