We teach and practice ethical behavior with all clinical and research activities. Notably, we are well educated to treat the subjects participating in research studies with high ethical standards. However, the ethics of interacting with colleagues, or with junior faculty members, are neither well defined nor taught. Dealing with junior faculty has parallels to dealing with vulnerable research subjects such as children, mentally or physically challenged groups, prison inmates or army recruits. Like any other vulnerable population, lower-ranking faculty members are often at the mercy of department chairs or other higher-ranked faculty members. Herein we present some potentially unethical or unfair examples related to academic research. Our goal is to educate the academic community of conceptual paths and to prevent similar untoward occurrences from happening in the future. Unethical behaviors related to sexual misconduct have already been described elsewhere and are not included in this manuscript.

This study analyze the social interpretation of “Arum luhuring pawiyatan ing astanira”. Phenomenology approach is used with UNNES academic research subjects such as students, lecturers, and administrative staff. Research finds; First, the spiritual values of “arum luhuring pawiyatan ing astanira” means that the progress of the university is in the hands of the academic community. However, campus residents have not yet embraced this meaning,especiallyinacademiclife.Second,operationalrulesforimplementing“arum luhuring pawiyatan ing astanira” have not been socialized. Therefore, this spirit is not yetsignificantincampusactivity.Third,developmentisdonethroughthecurriculumof collegeconservationandethicsofcollegelife.Recommendationsbasedontheresults of the study are the implementation of intensive socialization of the spirit of education inallaspectsofcampusactivitiesinordertoestablishaconservationacademicclimate.

We empirically investigated Chinese university faculty members' visiting experience and professional growth in American universities. The major data source was qualitative semistructured interviews with 30 Chinese faculty members in the arts, engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences disciplines. The results showed that, despite challenges in preparation, language, and different academic cultures, Chinese visiting scholars were capable of navigating their host programs and achieving professional growth as they moved from peripheral to central participation in their academic community. We also critically discussed how Chinese visiting scholars' academic experience in the United States can be improved, and cast light on the globalization of higher education.

Treatment of metastatic colon cancer has evolved over time. More evidence has been emerging in recent years supporting metastasectomy in selected patients. We sought to elucidate whether the type of institution—community, comprehensive community, academic/research, and integrated cancer network—would have an effect on patient outcome, specifically those colon cancer patients with isolated liver metastasis. This retrospective cohort study queried the National Cancer Database (NCDB) from 2010 to 2014 for patients who were 18 years of age or older with stage IVA colon cancer with isolated liver metastasis. We then performed uni- and multivariate analyses comparing patients based on such factors as age, tumor characteristics, primary tumor location, rate of chemotherapy, and type of treating institution. Patients who came from regions of higher income, receiving chemotherapy, and presenting to an academic/research hospital were more likely to undergo metastasectomy. Median survival was longest at academic/community hospitals at 22.4 months, 6 to 7 months longer than the other three types of institutions. Factors positively affecting survival included receiving chemotherapy, presenting to an academic/research institution, and undergoing metastasectomy, all at P < .05. In our study, the rate of metastasectomy was more than double at academic/research institutions for those with stage IVA colon cancer with isolated liver metastasis. Prior studies have quoted a mere 4.1% synchronous colon resection and metastasectomy. Our findings suggest that we should maintain multidisciplinary approach to this complex disease process and that perhaps it is time for us to consider regionalization of care in treating metastatic colon cancer.

Scientific research plays an important role in the achievement of a sustainable society. However, grasping the trends in sustainability research is difficult because studies are not devised and conducted in a top-down manner with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To understand the bottom-up research activities, we analyzed over 300,000 publications concerned with sustainability by using citation network analysis and natural language processing. The results suggest that sustainability science’s diverse and dynamic changes have been occurring over the last few years; several new topics, such as nanocellulose and global health, have begun to attract widespread scientific attention. We further examined the relationship between sustainability research subjects and SDGs and found significant correspondence between the two. Moreover, we extracted SDG topics that were discussed following a convergent approach in academic studies, such as “inclusive society” and “early childhood development”, by observing the convergence of terms in the citation network. These results are valuable for government officials, private companies, and academic researchers, empowering them to understand current academic progress along with research attention devoted to SDGs.

The present study deals with Utilization of ICT among the faculty members of Siddha Colleges and various level of operating system with the information accessed by the faculty through the internet. The survey was conducted with the help of the questionnaire and personal interview. The responses received from the available faculty are presented in tables and data is analyzed by using simple statistical method. The findings reveals that the access of electronic information is an important component of research activities for faculty members like E-Journals, E-books, E-databases are most preferred electronic information resources.

Social networking tools have become an integral part of our daily lives. Recently, a new type of Social Networking Sites (SNSs) namely Academic Social Networking sites (ASNSs) has attracted global users. There is perceived usefulness on the impact of ASNSs on patterns of academic research activities. However, it remains unclear why some researchers do not use ASNSs at all. The purpose of this paper is therefore to explore the ASNSs usage among Malaysian academic researchers and to investigate benefits, specific purpose, drivers and barriers of using ASNSs. A total of 210 completed cases were collected through paper-based and online-based questionnaire. In order to show the outcome of the research, descriptive interpretation of data is performed. The overall findings of this research indicate that there is low rate of ASNSs usage among researchers. In addition, the results show that colleagues, attitude toward technology and communication benefits are the drivers to use ASNSs and trust, privacy and security are the common barriers regarding to use ASNSs.

Administrators and faculty are grappling with the relative importance of teaching and research by professors in higher education. While various opinions exist, both faculty and administrators will likely agree that research will remain prominent in the near future. Faculty frustration can result from inadequate support for research. A national survey of business school faculty examines support adequacy by type of school. Of the ten categories of research support studied, six are receiving less than adequate support. Administrators who allocate their limited research budgets based on the findings of this study will likely remove many of the obstacles their faculty members face in meeting the research objectives of their institutions.
