This article analyses the complex dynamics between the human body and the urban environment in the work of French photographer Valérie Jouve. Focussing on a number of works drawn from the series Les Personnages and Les Façades, I propose the notion of containment to be crucial to the study of Jouve's urban portraits. I first approach it as a matter of containment of the human body by the civic and architectural structures of the city, arguing that Jouve renders visible the usually hidden mechanisms of such containment. This leads me to consider the question of boundaries and the relationship of the urban centre to its periphery, which, in the context of France, is bound up with narratives of social stratification. In the final part of the article I consider Jouve's photography as the space of representation, contained by the photographic frame, with theoretical discourse on the tableau providing the main analytical framework.

The 1960-1980s is the time for the development of the wide architectural and construction practice of the Soviet Union of the techniques and methods of world modernism, the adaptation of world experience to the special socio-economic and political circumstances of the country. The public and shopping center on Kalinin Avenue in Moscow is one of the demonstrative experiments in Soviet architecture. It illustrates the functional-typological and spatial-planning findings of XX century architecture, demonstrates the attitude of modernism to the historical urban environment and at the same time fully meets the image of modernity in architecture. It shows the relationship of modernism to the historical urban environment. This ensemble has become an example to be repeated in many cities of the country, including in the South of Russia. The article is devoted to the architecture of the Krasnodar Book House and the Shopping Gallery on Navaginskaya Street in Sochi. They are considered as unique examples of the organization of an extended citywide public and shopping center. The author has carried out a comparative analysis of objects in the context of world and domestic trends in the formation of a functional-spatial type, identified space-planning and formal techniques of modernism in their architecture. On the basis of the conducted field surveys, photographs, study of literature, historical graphic and photographic materials, the now lost original appearance of the objects is restored. Despite the differences in the degree of spatial complexity, functional and imaginative content of the complexes built in Sochi and Krasnodar, the nature of their integration into the historical environment of cities, both objects are typical examples of their stylistic and typological group and are endowed with common recognizable features.

Following the theoretical and disciplinary framing of the elements that substantiate the relationship of archaeology with architecture and the city in light of the transformations of the modern city, the project aims at valorizing the archaeological asset, promoting a knowledge of the ruins from multiple theoretical perspectives. The enhancement project of the Archaeological Park of Baiae experiments with different modalities of knowing that include the knowledge of the relationship between the ruin and the landscape, the philological, typological-constructive knowledge, and the knowledge of the ruin’s own spatial elements. Bringing together the contributions of different disciplines and experts under the coordination of an architect, the theoretical core of the project promotes the enhancement of the Archaeological Park, envisioning it as a means of valorisation of a wider urban environment.

The author of article considers the relationship of processes of information space of modernity and architectural reality. The article presents the typology of disclosure of the architectural- spatial in terms of information factor as the concept of self-organization. The author designates balance of semantic content of architectural-information space as a constant of formation of the urban environment and the city scenarios. It is established that changes of key environmental contexts result in need of revision of the tools and mechanisms of a shaping for works of the architect focused on a possibility of management of information.

Rapid urbanization and growing economic prosperity had brought a higher rate of motorization in developed countries and now in developing countries also. History can provide valuable information and lessons on the interplay of factors that shape urban growth and development. This study examines changes in urban planning factors especially in transportation system and traffic mobility of Gifu City during the late 20th century when Japan was in the high economic growth period. And by looking at the result, in Gifu, with development of motorization, as the same time as policy planning was made that attached importance to construct road network and the withdrawal of city tram, the land use development was also focused in surrounding area and suburban area. As the result, Motorization grew more and more in Gifu city and Gifu city is being plagued by the doughnut phenomenon. It is important to find the relationship of urban planning factors to give experience for future urban planning and transport planning.

Climate change is making our cities more vulnerable, increasing the needs for further policy actions to make them more resilient. In particular, the transport network is critical in the first phase of disaster response. This study presents the epirical findings of a large scale, nationwide analysis of the road network vulnerability in 69 Japanese cities. We (1) identify the level of network efficiency using topological elements in its undisturbed normal state; (2) evaluate the level of network robustness under different random and targeted attack scenarios; and (3) analyze the relationship of the identified network efficiency and robustness indicators with city-level characteristics. The main findings include: (1) cities with a higher population and a higher infrastructure investment tend to be more robust under random attacks; (2) larger cities tend to be less robust to targeted attacks, presumably due to their high agglomeration of urban functions; (3) car dependency tends to make cities more vulnerable toward random attacks and less vulnerable toward targeted attacks as it indicates a weaker concentration in urban functions; and (4) a high modal share for trains tends to make cities less vulnerable toward random events as it indicates a high agglomeration of urban functions. These findings will help policymakers to prioritize their budget allocations to improve nationwide disaster resilience.

Through an ethnographic observation of the riverine community of Porto do Sal, I propose to analyze the relationship of the inhabitants with their environment, in this case the encounter of water and land in the urban environment of Belém. The intimate relationship of the habitués of Porto do Sal with the Guajará Bay directly influences their social relations and imaginary expressions. From the perspective of urban anthropology and according to Pierre Sansot’s sensitive approach (1973), I propose a reflection that considers the environment as an aesthetic and ethic experience with the place based on a definition of the landscape as a phenomenon that originates from the human experience in the world. I put a particular emphasis on the sensitive register of the daily experience of the urban world, on the day-to-day gestures and the “being-together” (Maffesoli, 1999; 2010) that are specific to riverine landscapes of the waterside of Belém’s old port. In this case, the ethnographic description aims to produce images of Porto do Sal as an ensemble of landscapes, with the intention to stimulate reflection about the social imaginary in the Amazon region, specifically in the urban environment of Belém. Key words: Landscapes. Porto do Sal. Aesthetic. Memory. Art.

The Mesozoic-Cenozoic coral Order Scleractinia has been suggested to have originated or evolved (1) by direct descent from the Paleozoic Order Rugosa or (2) by the development of a skeleton in members of one of the anemone groups that probably have existed throughout Phanerozoic time. In spite of much work on the subject, advocates of the direct descent hypothesis have failed to find convincing evidence of this relationship. Critical points are:(1) Rugosan septal insertion is serial; Scleractinian insertion is cyclic; no intermediate stages have been demonstrated. Apparent intermediates are Scleractinia having bilateral cyclic insertion or teratological Rugosa.(2) There is convincing evidence that the skeletons of many Rugosa were calcitic and none are known to be or to have been aragonitic. In contrast, the skeletons of all living Scleractinia are aragonitic and there is evidence that fossil Scleractinia were aragonitic also. The mineralogic difference is almost certainly due to intrinsic biologic factors.(3) No early Triassic corals of either group are known. This fact is not compelling (by itself) but is important in connection with points 1 and 2, because, given direct descent, both changes took place during this only stage in the history of the two groups in which there are no known corals.
