With respect to the increasing production of tire wastes, the use of these wastes as an additive in civil engineering has always gained attentions of researchers due to their positive effects on material properties and reduction of environmental problems. Clay soils, as problematic soils, have always caused geotechnical problems including high Atterberg limits and consequently low workability. Tire powder, as one of the products of tire wastes, lacks clay cohesion and it can be effective in altering the plasticity of clay soils. As no comprehensive study has been conducted in this regard specifically on Tehran clay soil yet, this research studies experimentally the effect of adding different percentages of tire powder to clay soil at the Atterberg limits of clay soils with two different types of plasticity. More over according to previous studies, the effect of tire powder on other geotechnical properties of clay soils and the advantages and disadvantages of using tire powder in clay soils are discussed. The results indicate that addition of tire powder to clay soils has positive effects on reducing the Atterberg limits, increasing efficiency, and improving resistance, permeability, swelling reduction, and settlement properties, and reducing soil density and it can be used as an additive in improving clay soils.

It is known that the stress values and the distribution of the latter in depth depend to a large extent on the size of the Foundation sole and especially the width. In this article, in order to select the optimal width of the Foundation sole and the thickness of the sand cushion, the influence of the sole width on the distribution of vertical stresses in the ground base is studied on the example of foundations for metal pipes. The presence of weak water-saturated clay soils within the construction site was taken into account. Variants of the device from traditional prismatic piles and foundations of small laying on a sandy pillow are offered. a technical and economic comparison of options was carried out. The advantages and disadvantages of each option are analyzed. Using the methodology of verification calculations in the design of sandbags, the optimization of the accepted version of the foundations was made.

Tear propagation is a typical breakage modality of fabric laminates. In this paper, analysis methods and their empirical formulas about tear propagation of a kind of fabric laminate which is used in high altitude lighter-than-air vehicle (LTA) is studied. The methods include Griffith’s energy balance method, Thiele’s empirical formula method, Stress field consideration method and critical stress intensity factor method. Testing about tear propagation strength in biaxial stress is done by a tailor-made testing machine to study on the methods. And then a comparison is drawn between these formulas and results of the experimentation. Subsequently, advantages and disadvantages of these formulas and their scope of application are concluded. While by using the empirical formulas, the analysis of tear propagation of different incision shapes is given. It is useful for the further study on different fabric laminates.

The article discusses the pile indentation equipment for dive prefabricated reinforced concrete piles which are used in clay soils in urban environments. It was developed in 2003 and intended for dive reinforced concrete piles of different cross-sectional (square, round, prismatic, ring, etc.) length from 5 to 12 meters. Different modifications (SVU-1, SVU-2 and SVU-3) have been prepared during the period of equipment’s exploitation. They have dived more than 35,000 prefabricated concrete piles in Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Kemerovo and other cities of Russia. In 2011 specialists of “FundamentSpetsStroy” (Tomsk) and specialists from the Kuban State Agrarian University (Krasnodar) developed a special device-meter, which provides to get information on efforts of the indentation piles at predetermined elevations. The article describes a structure of device and its operating principle. The principle of device based on the conversion parameters of pressure hydraulic system of pile indentation equipment during the pile diving into an electrical signal that is converted to digital information. The article presents the main results of effort indentation of piles, also tables of received values and graphics. The article performed an analysis and the generalization results of experimental research.

The morphological methods are successful analytical and practical tools for development and choice of new engineering solutions. They can be successfully used in the conceptual and preliminary design stages of the development of new systems, products and technologies. The article discusses the scope of application, classification, advantages and disadvantages of this approach. The design process consists of two stages - structural synthesis and parametric optimization. The morphological approach is used for the structural synthesis stage. Structural synthesis generates a significant number of variants. This stage is the most important tool for achieving the high characteristics of the systems being designed. The article discusses the ratios between parametric, structural and structural-parametric methods of synthesis. The possibility of computerizing the stage of structural synthesis on morphological approach is discussed.

Facial nerve injury often results in facial paralysis, which seriously affects the patients both aesthetically and functionally. Facial nerve reinnervation methods, including direct anastomosis, nerve graft, nerve transposition, cross-facial nerve graft, and combined surgeries, have recently become a hot topic with many new procedures being explored. This study summarizes the relevant literatures and discusses the scope of application, advantages, and disadvantages of the different methods. The treatment options or combined surgeries for facial nerve reinnervation should be individualized for specific patients to achieve the best reanimation outcome with good static symmetry, facial tone, and spontaneous, natural, symmetrical, and strong facial movements.
