Since Canada has signed the UNESCO Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of 1972, it has had some eighteen cultural and natural sites selected for the World Heritage List that represent internationally significant nature reserves and natural wonders, significant Canadian architectural history, important sites representing Canadian aboriginal culture and geological treasures of world-wide importance. These internationally significant sites have put Canada on the world stage in both the heritage conservation field and in the national and international tourism sector. What Canada has decided to inscribe on this list has had a major impact at the local, regional, national and international arenas. The author of this paper reflects on some of the ancillary guiding charters and conventions since the World Heritage Convention was implemented that have led to where we are today in the field of heritage conservation in Canada. He goes on to predict some areas where heritage conservation will be going in Canada in the near future. He argues that Canada could likewise have its rich intangible culture play a similarly significant role if the Canadian government signed the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage of 2003. Last, he discusses some of the recent developments in eastern Canada in intangible cultural heritage, conservation and the sustaining of traditions.

In the information society, the media exert a key influence on the consumer selection of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) products. Drawing on the literature of cultural identity, product involvement, and willingness to buy, this paper constructs and verifies the theoretical model of media influence-cultural identity-willingness to buy ICH products, with ICH product consumers as the objects. The results show that the media have a significantly positive effect on cultural identity, which in turn significantly promotes the willingness to buy, but the media do not significantly affect the willingness to buy. Cultural identity fully mediates the media influence on the willingness to buy. Referring to relevant studies on product involvement, the samples were divided into a set of high involvement and a set of low involvement. The moderating effect analysis reveals that the higher the product involvement, the more significant the effect of media on cultural identity and the more prominent the influence of cultural identity on the willingness to buy. Finally, the authors discussed the managerial implications of the research results for ICH inheritors and enterprises.

The article investigates the forms and principles of involving intangible cultural heritage in tourism development thought the example of the Republic of Karelia. Various forms of intangible cultural heritage are presented according to the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2003. Forms of using of intangible cultural heritage in the framework of the various types of tourism organization are explored through the certain examples. The authors consider 4 conditions of legend’s involvement in the service process in the territory of tourism destination according to the «Scheherazade strategy» by Christian Salmon: (1) submission of natural and cultural heritage through the history / legend; (2) certain time of story / legend providing; (3)«message» of tourism destinations; (4) creation of information field on the Internet. The authors specify the 3rd point and formulated it as «formation of cultural anchor» that should «tie» specific local legend to places and objects located in the territory. The intangible cultural heritage involvement in the process of tourist services organization is considered by the example of the Karelian-Finnish epic poem «Kalevala», consisting of 50 runes (the Republic of Karelia). Experience of the «Kalevala» epic poem involvement in tourism is considered: tourism routes development, creating and adaptation of legends, development of event and adventure tourism. The possibility of implementing the updated «Scheherazade strategy» by the example of the epic poem «Kalevala» is investigated. As the research result, the authors propose an annual roleplaying game «Kalevala. Amazing adventure» as the new actual form of promotion «Kalevala» epic poem. This project was developed by students and lectures of Tourism Department of Petrozavodsk State University and included to the Small Deal Strategy of Kalevala region of the Republic of Karelia. The notion of the cultural heritage of humanity is relatively recent, but its protection and conservation date back to the Renaissance. Over time, this type of initiatives has been supported legislatively, which provided a legal framework, including the obligation to protect and rescue humanity’s exceptional natural and cultural assets. One form of legislation on the protection and conservation of heritage is the Paris Convention of November 1972 which, for the first time, brought to public attention the idea of World Heritage. Romania adopted the convention by Decree No. 187/1990. Since then, our country has managed to list eight UNESCO cultural and natural sites and with the promulgation of Law No. 410 of December 29, 2005, on the protection of intangible cultural heritage, it registered six other heritage elements, the Romanian culture thus occupying a well-deserved place among the cultures of the world. The 1972 Convention is important due to the impetus was given to the countries of the world to preserve, protect and promote their national values, but also to place them among other world property of exceptional value.
