Case studies are useful in imparting decision-making skills to students. Warehousing is a critical part of most supply chains, but case studies based on warehousing methods and operations therein are rare. Recognizing the need to bridge this gap, a case study is designed to present a real-life scenario at the carriage repair workshop of Indian Railways. The case study facilitates the learning of students regarding operations in automated warehousing and relevant storage strategies. Additionally, the case encourages the students to explore the use of heuristics and optimization models. This case article highlights the major learning objectives of the case study and discusses the classroom teaching experience. This case can be used in various courses and the case questions can be selected based on the teaching objectives and/or the educational background of the students.

AbstractLittle research has considered fuzzy scheduling and sequencing problem in operating rooms. Multiple-period fuzzy scheduling and sequencing of patients in operating rooms optimization models are proposed in this research taking into consideration patient‘s preference. The objective of the scheduling optimization model is obtaining minimal undertime and overtime and maximum patients' satisfaction about the assigned date. The objective of sequencing the optimization model is both to minimize overtime and to maximize patients' satisfaction about the assigned time. A real-life case study from a hospital that offers comprehensive surgical procedures for all surgical specialties is considered for illustration. Research results showed that the proposed models efficiently scheduled and sequenced patients while considering their preferences and hospitals operating costs. In conclusion, the proposed optimization models may result in improving patient satisfaction, utilizing hospital's resources efficiently, and providing assistance to decision makers and planners in solving effectively fuzzy scheduling and sequencing problems of operating rooms.

Case studies provide helpful teaching tools to capture the complexity of administrative problems from an action-oriented perspective. With increasingly complex policy problems at hand, more interdisciplinary, interactive, and discursive approaches to teaching are also in demand. However, the case method offers a broad variety of options for teaching programs, ranging from short case illustrations or vignettes to full-length case studies. Attached to various types of case materials are different didactic approaches that pursue different pedagogic logics and are likely to make different contributions to in-classroom teaching. The case method in teaching public administration, however, comes at a cost and requires extra capacity, higher time budgets as well as new qualifications and roles of teachers plus a good fit of student (self)-selection and teaching objectives. If meaningfully utilized, it enhances our capacity to prepare (future) executives for complex environments.

This chapter overviews the rationale and methodology underpinning the implementation of two ‘purpose written' case studies delivered within two separate undergraduate Management courses. Finding suitable pre-existing Management-related case studies for different student cohorts can be difficult and time consuming, and may only partially align with the learning objectives. Writing one's own case studies to meet the learning objectives of courses is viewed by the writers as a proactive strategy to redress this gap. It is advantageous that the case study author enables students to apply diagnostic skills in diverse situations that may range from simple to complex, and to ensure that students are drawing on theoretical underpinnings from their Management coursework. This chapter further presents on how to develop in students the ability to shift from being a reactive learner to examining a case proactively through a strategic managerial lens for diagnosing and solving problems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss the pervasive problem of a lack of replication studies in international business based on van Witteloostuijn’s (2016) commentary “What happened to Popperian Falsification?” Design/methodology/approach The author presents two short case studies from her own research, one in which no replication studies took place, and one in which a replication study was conducted shortly after the original study was published. Findings The author shows how the lack of replication in the first case study example resulted in the creation of research myths, whereas the judicious replication in her second case study strengthened arguments for a new – less biased – measure of research performance. The author also discusses why most journals in the field are not open to replication studies and provides recommendations on how to move forward. Originality/value Using two real-life case studies provides a vivid illustration of the problems created by a lack of replications and illustrates the benefits of good replication studies.

AbstractThe chapter describes the case studies methodology on the ground of the volume: their use and comparison are investigated from a theoretical point of view. This chapter has a twofold aim: (i) contextualise case studies and the experimentation/prototyping conducted by the pilots, then (ii) to provide a compass for going through the next chapters in which it is detailed the experience of each pilot as a case study. This reasoning is a premise for understanding and situating the relevant points emerged in the larger picture of the RRI framework.

This study sought to determine the usefulness of interrupted case studies, utilizing a progressive disclosure of information over time, to increase critical thinking and student learning in the study of foundational theories in the human development field. Apted’s (2013) Up documentary series, consisting of video interviews over a 49-year period, was used as the interrupted study and successfully provided vicarious, but meaningful, opportunities to consistently and authentically apply course content. Participants (N = 23) were students in three sections of a graduate Human Development course where a pre-/post-test format was utilized. The effect was significant as all participant’s posttest score improved an average of 24.3%, F(3, 19) = 3.55, p = .049. Also, coded student work indicated an increase in complex levels of thinking across the 8-week assignment, further validating post-test scores, t(352) = -3.172, p = .002. Evidence from student work further confirmed that an interrupted video case-study, could address limitations typically associated with case-based instruction and, more importantly, provide the critical case-study qualities needed here. Those included, telling a detailed, ambiguous, and real-life story that provided genuine context to connect theory and practice.

The curriculum is an absolute thing that must be owned by a teaching unit. The curriculum is the core of the learning process. Az-Zahwa Playgroup Trenggalek has five teachers with high-school educational background and has never received training or workshops. This condition has an impact on the course during the learning process. The learning process runs without a plan, and the activities taken during the learning process was not appropriate to the children's age. This research aims to describe the strategies in increasing teacher competence, especially in pedagogic and professionalism based on structured-mentoring. In this research, the structured-mentoring was conducted by providing alternately structured materials and practice using prepared learning-tools appropriate to curriculum 2013. This type of research was qualitative with a case-study design. The data were collected using observations, interviews, and documentation. This research's inhibiting factor was that the teachers have a high-school educational background and have not had teaching experience, resulting in a lack of knowledge and teaching skills. On the other hand, the supporting factor was that teachers were enthusiastic and creative in developing the learning tools based on local culture. The results achieved from this structured-monitoring research were the teachers were able to make the learning-tools start from PROTA, PROMES, RPPM, RPPH according to 2013 Curriculum based on local culture and ended by generating the score by using work-result oriented techniques, checklist, portfolio, and anecdotal notes.

Background Case studies are often used to supplement lecture material to students of psychology. Recent research on the use of online support forums has been shown to be more effective in increasing student attainment of course learning objectives than the use of case studies. Objective The current research replicated two studies on the use of online support forums and extended this work to chronic pain and compared midterm exam scores from two different semesters when case studies and online support forums were used as a supplementary learning exercise. Method Following a lecture on chronic pain students were randomly assigned to either the case study or online support forum condition and asked to rate their experience based on four learning objectives. Results Students who took part in the online support forum learning exercise rated the four learning objectives higher and obtained higher marks on a midterm exam than students in the case study exercise. Conclusion Reading people’s personal accounts of their experience with chronic pain through online support forums is more effective in increasing student understanding of the effects of chronic pain than the traditional case study. Teaching Implications Implications for teaching material that is highly emotional are discussed.


In this chapter, we have compiled several relevant case studies on marketing for children's market in order to better comprehend the real-life situation and dilemma faced by proponents and actors in the field. At the end of every case study, we have also prepared a list of analytical questions that could be used to apply and further comprehend the concepts, models, and findings which have been discussed in this book.

ABSTRACT This case is designed to be used in an undergraduate or M.B.A. managerial/cost accounting course. The case asks students to act as advisors to the owner of a relatively new coffee and tea house. Students' familiarity with coffee houses enhances the real-life application of cost/managerial concepts in the case. The primary learning objectives include understanding quality costs, developing a strategy map, designing a balanced scorecard (BSC), analyzing how some of the BSC measures would be captured and monitored, and articulating the advantages/disadvantages of linking a BSC to employee evaluation. The small business is easily understood by students and, therefore, the case allows for rich class discussion.
