Fungal deterioration of second-growth Douglas-fir logs, felled each month from August 1961 to May 1962, was studied 2, 4, and 6 years after felling. Decay increased from 10% of log volumes after 2 years to 47% after 6 years. The rate of decay, particularly for the brown cubical type, was greater for autumn- and winter-felled logs than for those felled in the spring and late summer, and closely paralleled the seasonal pattern of ambrosia beetle attack.Decay rates increased with decreasing log size, increasing percentage of sapwood, and increasing height of log above ground. For the same diameter of log, base logs decayed less rapidly than second logs, possibly because of their lower proportion of sapwood in relation to heartwood.Decay expressed as a percentage of total log volume (Y) may be estimated (R2 = 0.71) with the following equation: Y = 13.2 + 10.7X1 − 3.2X2, where X1 = years elapsed and X2 = d.i.b. (diameter inside bark) top of log.Of 30 wood-decay fungi isolated, Naematoloma sp. (N. capnoides or N. fasciculare), which causes a white rot, was associated with the most decay. Fomes pinicola was mainly responsible for brown cubical sap rot, while Poria monticola and P. carbonica caused a brown cubical heart rot at the ends of logs. The significance of variations in deterioration rate and fungal associates is discussed in relation to log durability and salvability.

This paper investigates the life-cycle seismic resilience of aging road networks with reinforced concrete (RC) bridges under the effects of climate change. The physical damage suffered by the exposed bridges is related to traffic limitations implemented over the network. A probabilistic framework is proposed to aggregate the time-variant seismic capacity assessment of RC structures exposed to chloride-induced corrosion with the traffic response of the transportation network. The life-cycle seismic resilience of a simple road network is evaluated based on the restoration of the network functionality guaranteed by the post-event recovery of the damaged bridge. The results highlight the detrimental effects of the progressive increase in the deterioration rate induced by climate change, impairing the seismic capacity of single bridges and, in turn, the seismic resilience of the overall transportation system.

Background and Purpose: Paravertebral arteriovenous shunts (PVAVSs) are rare. Whether the intradural venous system is involved in drainage may lead to differences in clinical characteristics through specific pathophysiological mechanisms. This study aims to comprehensively evaluate the natural history and clinical outcomes of PVAVSs with or without intradural drainage. Methods: Sixty-four consecutive patients with PVAVSs from 2 institutes were retrospectively reviewed. Lesions were classified as type A (n=28) if the intradural veins were involved in drainage; otherwise, they were classified as type B (n=36). The clinical course from initial presentation to the last follow-up was analyzed. Results: The patients with type A shunts were older at presentation (52.5 versus 35.5 years, P <0.0001) and more likely to have lower spinal segments affected than patients with type B PVAVSs (67.8% versus 13.9%, P =0.00006). After presentation, the deterioration rates related to gait and sphincter dysfunction were significantly higher in patients with type A than type B shunts (gait dysfunction: 71.8%/y versus 17.0%/y, P =0.0006; sphincter dysfunction: 63.7%/y versus 11.3%/y, P =0.0002). According to the angiogram at the end of the latest treatment, 79% of type A and 75% of type B PVAVSs were completely obliterated. If the lesions were partially obliterated, a significantly higher clinical deterioration rate was observed in patients with type A shunts than those with type B shunts (69.9%/y versus 3.2%/y, P =0.0253). Conclusions: Type A PVAVSs feature rapid progressive neurological deficits; therefore, early clinical intervention is necessary. For complex lesions that cannot be completely obliterated, surgical disconnection of all refluxed radicular veins is suggested.

The use of borax solution as a preservative in wood and bamboo materials is well known in the community. A borax solution is an environmentally friendly liquid that can dissolve in water, so it is suitable to be used as a preservative within cold or hot soaking techniques. The ability of borax to resist insects and fungus attacks on bamboo has been proven, but the effect of the solution on the strength of bamboo must also be investigated. This study conducts to investigate the effects of borax and its additives as preservative solutions to the mechanical properties of bamboos. The bamboos preservations were conducted by cold conditions of immersion, while the mechanical properties were performed to understand the effects of preservatives. The result of this study indicated that 30% to 50% borax in the preservative solution is sufficient to provide significant increase in strength for compressive strength, tensile strength, and bending strength of bamboo specimen. From this study, the use of borax solution in preserving the bamboos materials improved the quality of bamboos based on its mechanical properties.

Autosomal dominant polycystic disease (ADPKD) is the most frequent monogenic kidney disease. It causes progressive renal failure, endothelial dysfunction, and hypertension, all of which are strictly linked to oxidative stress (OxSt). Treatment with tolvaptan is known to slow the renal deterioration rate, but not all the molecular mechanisms involved in this effect are well-established. We evaluated the OxSt state in untreated ADPKD patients compared to that in tolvaptan-treated ADPKD patients and healthy subjects. OxSt was assessed in nine patients for each group in terms of mononuclear cell p22phox protein expression, NADPH oxidase key subunit, MYPT-1 phosphorylation state, marker of Rho kinase activity (Western blot) and heme oxygenase (HO)-1, induced and protective against OxSt (ELISA). p22phox protein expression was higher in untreated ADPKD patients compared to treated patients and controls: 1.42 ± 0.11 vs. 0.86 ± 0.15 d.u., p = 0.015, vs. 0.53 ± 0.11 d.u., p < 0.001, respectively. The same was observed for phosphorylated MYPT-1: 0.96 ± 0.28 vs. 0.68 ± 0.09 d.u., p = 0.013 and vs. 0.47 ± 0.13 d.u., p < 0.001, respectively, while the HO-1 expression of untreated patients was significantly lower compared to that of treated patients and controls: 5.33 ± 3.34 vs. 2.08 ± 0.79 ng/mL, p = 0.012, vs. 1.97 ± 1.22 ng/mL, p = 0.012, respectively. Tolvaptan-treated ADPKD patients have reduced OxSt levels compared to untreated patients. This effect may contribute to the slowing of renal function loss observed with tolvaptan treatment.

Our model deals with the stock-dependent demand as exhibiting huge volume of commodities leads to more costumers and augment the trading of the goods. As some goods like vegetables, fruits, medicines deteriorate after a period of time, resulting in economical and financial losses, we took this factor into consideration and included a constant deterioration rate, controlled by suitable preservation technologies. Preservation technology investments are made for the valuable business as it helps to decrease the rate of deterioration. Our model allows shortages, and back-ordering is permissible to manage the loss that occurs due to perishable objects and shortages. The objectives are to find the optimal cycle time, preservation technology cost, and positive inventory time. The paper also proves the convexity of total cost through graphs with respect to decision variables. A sensitivity analysis of decision variables with respect to different inventory parameters is carried out.
