Objectives Researchers continue to seek easier ways to evaluate the quality of bone and screen for osteoporosis and osteopenia. Until recently, radiographic images of various parts of the body, except the distal femur, have been reappraised in the light of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) findings. The incidence of osteoporotic fractures around the knee joint in the elderly continues to increase. The aim of this study was to propose two new radiographic parameters of the distal femur for the assessment of bone quality. Methods Anteroposterior radiographs of the knee and bone mineral density (BMD) and T-scores from DXA scans of 361 healthy patients were prospectively analyzed. The mean cortical bone thickness (CBTavg) and the distal femoral cortex index (DFCI) were the two parameters that were proposed and measured. Intra- and interobserver reliabilities were assessed. Correlations between the BMD and T-score and these parameters were investigated and their value in the diagnosis of osteoporosis and osteopenia was evaluated. Results The DFCI, as a ratio, had higher reliability than the CBTavg. Both showed significant correlation with BMD and T-score. When compared with DFCI, CBTavg showed better correlation and was better for predicting osteoporosis and osteopenia. Conclusion The CBTavg and DFCI are simple and reliable screening tools for the prediction of osteoporosis and osteopenia. Background: Osteoporosis is considered as a major public health issue with fragility fractures of the hip, vertebrae and distal radius being the most important consequences. It has been said to be an age-related degenerative process. However, postmenopausal women develop this disease due to age-related bone mineral loss as well as due to declining levels of estrogen in the body following menopause leading to increased risk of fractures. Objectives of this study were to find out the prevalence of osteoporosis in hysterectomised and non-hysterectomised postmenopausal women in 7th decade of life.Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study done on a total of 66 postmenopausal women who were in their 7th decade of life. They were divided into two groups, one consisting of 36 women who underwent natural menopause and the other group of 30 women who had surgical menopause. The bone mineral density of both the groups was measured using DEXA scan and comparison was done between these study groups.Results: Out of 30 hysterectomised subjects, 24 (80%) were found to be having osteoporosis, 6 (20%) had osteopenia and none had normal BMD. While out of 36 subjects in the non-hysterectomised group, 14 (38.88%) had osteoporosis, 16 (44.44%) had osteopenia and 6 (16.66%) subjects had normal BMD. Significant relation (p-value 0.001) was found on comparison of the study groups. In addition, significant positive correlation was between BMD and BMI whereas negative correlation was seen between BMD and parity.Conclusions: Hysterectomy was found to increase the incidence of osteoporosis. Obesity was found to have protective effect against bone mineral loss while increasing parity had a negative relation with BMD.

Abstract: Effect of Lampung Banana Potassium on Bone Mineral Density in the Elderly. This study aims to determine the effect of banana lampung on bone mineral density in the elderly in the Social Welfare Tresna Werdha and Werdha Graha Kasih Father’s home). This research is a research with experimental design with the separate sample pretest posttest control group design. The research was carried out in the Tresna Werdha Social Institution and the Werdha Graha Kasih Father’s house, from May to July 2017. The sampling technique was taken by random sampling The result of potassium feeding on 150 grams of banana per day for 30 days by increasing BMD T-score of 0.17 while in control group (without banana lampung) BMD T-score decreased by - 0.32. After intervention in both groups showed a difference of BMD T-score of 0.49. Abstrak: Pemberian Kalium Buah Pisang Lampung terhadap Densitas Mineral Tulang pada Lansia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui mengetahui pengaruh pemberian buah pisang lampung terhadap bone mineral density pada lansia di wilayah Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha dan panti Werdha Graha Kasih Bapa). Penelitian yang dilakukan ini adalah penelitian dengan desain eksperimen dengan rancangan the separate sample pretest posttest control group design. Penelitian dilaksanakan di wilayah Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha dan panti Werdha Graha Kasih Bapa), mulai bulan Mei s/d Juli 2017. Teknik sampling diambil dengan cara random sampling Hasil pemberian kalium pada buah pisang lampung sebanyak 150 gr setiap hari selama 30 hari dengan dapat meningkatkan BMD T-score sebesar 0,17 sedangkan pada kelompok control (tanpa pemberian buah pisang lampung) BMD T-score menurun sebesar - 0,32. Setelah intervensi pada ke dua kelompok menunjukkan adanya perbedaan BMD T-score sebesar 0,49.

Hip fracture is the leading cause of morbidity in the geriatric population of Pakistan. The anthropometric parameters and bone mineral density is closely associated with risks of femur fracture on the elderly. Objectives: This study is oriented upon the relation of anthropometric parameters and bone mineral density with femur neck fracture in the elderly. Study Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Mardan Medical Complex, Mardan, Pakistan. Period: May 2015 to October 2015. Material & Methods: A total of 121 patients both male and female from 50 to 70 years old were included in the study. Thirty patients had a history of hip fractures while 91 patients were age matched controls. Patients below 40 years and above 70 years were excluded as well as patients on long term steroids, or rheumatoid arthritis and bed ridden. Data regarding patient’s age, sex as well as height and weight were recorded. Both height and weight were measured in light clothing without shoes. Weight was measured using an electronic scale and standing height was measured to the nearest centimeter with a stadiometer. Body mass index was calculated as weight (kg)/height (m).2 Bone mineral density was assisted by Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) heel, using WHO T-score. The Anthropometric parameters and bone mineral density of hip fracture cases were then compared with age-matched control groups. For statistical analysis of data, we used SPSS 20. Results: The average age of hip fracture patients were higher than the control. Females with hip fracture found taller, lighter and had low BMI (p=0.003). Bone mineral density of hip fracture cases were significantly lower as compared to T-score of control (p=0.0001). Height correlated significantly with BMI (r=2.68 p=0.005) and with BMD (r=2.56 p=0.005). Weight had significant correlation with BMI (r= 0.488 p=0.0001) and with BMD (r=0.212 p=0.002). Conclusion: The anthropometric parameter, especially body mass Index and bone mineral density seems to be associated with the risk of femur neck fracture.

AbstractFalls may occur in each ontogenesis phase, but they become more frequent in the elderly and lead to serious health consequences. Dynamic changes in senior citizens’ environment and lifestyle makes studies of risk for falls necessary. To determine the relationship between the risk for falls and the objective functional and structural examination in the elderly living in Poland. The research consisted of 196 females and 61 males aged 60-88 recruited from health clinics, senior citizen centers and Universities of the Third Age between 2009-2012. Following parameters were collected: functional physical tests “30 second Chair Stand Test” and Timed Up and Go Test”, the flexor muscles and knee extensors force, the bone mineral density was measured in distal radius of the forearm with the EXA - 3000, the total risk for fall assessed by 5 tests by abbreviated version of Fallscreen test. Multiple linear regression and linear correlation were used for assessment of relationship with total estimated risk for fall and other parameters. The subjects displayed significant dimorphic differences within the range of the functional parameters and bone mineral density to the advantage of males. Only in women results revealed a significant link between the risk for falls and the dynamic balance, as well as the maximum quadricep muscle force equal. Strength of the lower limb muscles seems to be critical for decreasing the risk for fall. Special programs for strengthening this part of the body for older people should be elaborate.

Abstract Background Glucocorticoids-containing regimens are the standard first line treatment for most lymphoma patients, however, as the improvement of overall survival in these cases, glucocorticoids related osteopenia or osteoporosis attracted attention in clinical administration. We aim to investigate the efficacy of bisphosphonates in prevention bone mineral loss in glucocorticoids-treated lymphoma patients. Methods This is a prospective, randomized controlled phase 3 trial. Eligible lymphoma adults from China with first line glucocorticoids involved treatment, were randomly assigned 1:1 to receive either Zoledronic acid (ZA) for twice infusion or not. All patients received daily oral calcium and vitamin D3 for one year. The primary endpoint, alternations of bone mineral loss from enrollment to the twelfth month at the lumbar spine (L1-L4), left hip and left femoral neck, measured by the dual-energy, x-ray absorptiometry scanners, recorded as T score; and new bone fractures during the first year, were analyzed by intent-to-treat. This trial was registered with www.Chictr.org, number ChiCTR-INR-17010771. Results Between May, 2016 to July, 2019, 84 patients were randomly assigned to both Zoledronic acid and control groups, 29 patients completed the study and were on follow-up. We found a marked improvement of T score in ZA group compared with the control in a year at lumbar spine, T score changes of L1-4 in ZA group and control group were as following: L1, 0.14±0.61 vs. -0.33±0.40, p=0.009; L2, 0.28±0.41 vs. -0.35±0.54, p=0.003; L3, 0.23±0.42 vs. -0.23±0.66, p=0.020; L4, 0.28±0.44 vs. -0.35±0.54, p=0.020. Meanwhile, no severe adverse event was observed on both groups. Conclusions Glucocorticoids-treatment lymphoma patients that prophylactic ZA infusion could relieve BMD loss to prevent osteoporosis without increasing severe adverse effects in Chinese population, providing reference for clinicians to consider ZA application in this situation.

<span>Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease. Parameter from any bone site in the body has possibility to be developed as a predictor of osteoporosis. The alteration in the mandible trabecular bone is visible in periapical radiographs. The aim of this study was to correlate the area parameter and the integrated density of periapical radiograph with bone mineral density. Image analysis of periapical radiograph i.e. measurement of area parameter and integrated density was done on Region of Interest (ROI) by using canny edge detection method. Result of this study showed that the area parameter has asignificant (α&lt;0.05) negative correlation with the bone mass density (BMD) of the lumbar spine (r = -0.371) and T-score of the lumbar spine (r = -0.383). The linear regression test showed that the area parameter only can be used to predict T-score of the lumbar spine (F=5.822, α&lt;0.05). The integrated density showed a significant (α &lt; 0.05) negative correlation with T-score of hip (r = -0.332) and T-score of lumbar spine (r = -0.377). It can be concluded that the area parameter can be used as one of input parameters for computer-aided system of osteoporosis early detection by using periapical radiograph.</span>

Osteoporosis (OP) has been observed to have a deleterious effect on postmenopausal women’s life quality by increasing the risk of fragility fractures. The current research was adopted to verify the role of serum adiponectin, a cytokine released by adipose tissue, as a marker for OP across different body mass index groups, for a better understanding of fatty tissue role in OP. A case-control study recruited 210 eligible postmenopausal women and subgrouped into three groups based on their DEXA scan results: osteoporotic group, osteopenia group, and healthy controls; each includes 70 patients. Three datasets were collected: anthropometric, age, menopause duration, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and fat percentage. Radiological examination estimated the bone mineral density (BMD) for the femoral neck and lumbar spines with their respective T-score. From blood, we measured alkaline phosphatase and calcium by a spectrophotometer and serum adiponectin, phosphate, CTX, and PICP by ELIZA. Total BMD, T-score, serum phosphate, and PICP were significantly higher among healthy controls. Serum adiponectin, CTX, and ALP scored higher levels among OP cases. A strong inverse relationship was proved between serum adiponectin and T-score in osteoporotic and osteopenia groups (−0.427, −0.301). A strong negative relationship was found between serum adiponectin and total BMD in healthy controls (−0.204). All correlations were statistically significant, P value <0.001. Serum adiponectin can be a valuable marker for reduced bone mineral density among the general populace, irrespective of the body mass index. Further research is warranted to explore therapeutic and preventive applications for this adipocytokine.

Introduction. Osteoporosis (OP) is a common polygenic disorder in the aging population, and several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the alpha-L-iduronidase (IDUA) gene and patched homolog 1 (PTCH1) gene regulate bone metabolism and affect bone mass. The study aimed at investigating the relationships of rs3755955 and rs6831280 in the IDUA gene and rs28377268 in the PTCH1 gene with bone mineral density (BMD), bone turnover markers (BTMs), and fractures in the elderly Chinese subjects with OP. Materials and Methods. A cohort of 328 unrelated senile osteoporosis (SOP) patients with or without osteoporotic fractures was recruited. rs3755955, rs6831280, and rs28377268 polymorphisms were identified using SNaPshot technology. BTM levels were determined by electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Bone mineral densities (BMDs) at the lumbar spine (LS) and proximal femur sites were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in all subjects. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) test was performed. HWE P values and comparisons of genotype frequencies were estimated using the chi-square test. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) adjusted for confounding factors was performed to investigate associations of SNPs with BMDs and BTMs in subgroups. Results. The chi-square test indicated that genotype distributions in the control group conformed to HWE (P>0.05). The distributions of allele and genotype frequencies of rs6831280 between fracture and osteoporotic participants were significantly different (P-allele=0.002 and P-genotype=0.012, respectively). Concerning rs6831280, ANCOVA found BMDs at LS 2-4 (L2-4) and total hip (TH) among the study subjects suffering from SOP with GA genotype were lower than in those carrying GG or AA (P-L2-4=0.004 and P-TH=0.027, respectively). Conclusions. IDUA rs6831280 is associated with BMDs at L2-4 and TH in the elderly Chinese population with SOP and may serve as a marker for the genetic susceptibility to osteoporotic fractures.

Introduction and purpose: The purpose od this study is to describe influence of participating in sporting activities on health of the bones. Osteoporosis is a disease of elderly people in which bone mineral density lowers. Physical activity was reported to increase bone mineral density.A brief description of the state of knowledge: Better physical performance is a positive factor that lowers the possibility of fracturing the bones of the elderly. Another factor that plays protective role is lean body mass and development of muscles. Training in young age can help to increase the bone mineral density, but the effect ceases with the passing of time, being much lower after decades. Multiple genes have impact on bone mineral density of the individual. Professional athletes have usually higher bone mineral density, but accumulation of microdamage in their bones can result in stress fractures. Training in elderly age is proven to increase bone mineral density of an individual, especially performing weight-bearing sports.Conclusions: Physical activity has been proven to positively affect health in many ways. One of them is strengthening the bones by increasing bone mineral density. As it increases, the possibility to break the bone lowers, which makes it an effective way to support the fight against the osteoporosis. It is especially important for women, who are more susceptible to osteoporotic fractures in post-menopausal age.

Background: Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a common disorder in the elderly and found to be most prevalent in postmenopausal women which are thought to be associated with several factors including hypertension, however, results are inconsistent in different studies. Aim of the study: This study aimed to explore the association between BMD and hypertension in postmenopausal women. Methods and materials: In this study, total 76 postmenopausal women were included. BMD was determined at the lumbar spine and femoral neck by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Anthropometric data and status of hypertension and diabetes were collected according to a pre-structured questioner. Results: Age (mean±SD) of the postmenopausal women was 57±9 years. Among them, 46 (60.5%) subjects were hypertensive and 30 (39.5%) were normotensive. Bone mineral density (g/cm2) in normotensive women and in hypertensive women were 0.79±0.15 vs 0.74±0.15 (p=0.160) at lumbar spine; 0.70±0.12 vs 0.69±0.13 (p=0.271) at right femoral neck and 0.73±0.15 vs 0.71±0.13 (p=0.592), respectively. T-scores at lumbar spine, right and left femoral neck in normotensive and hypertensive postmenopausal women were -2.28±1.37 vs -2.75±1.35 (p=0.153), -1.70±1.16 vs -1.95±1.07 (p=0.363) and -1.82±0.95 vs -1.93±1.01 (p=0.632) respectively. On multiple regression analysis, BMD and T-score only at lumbar spine showed inverse association with hypertension (β=-0.069, p=0.045; β=-0.612, p=0.050) on adjusting confounding variables. Conclusion: Hypertension is independently associated with BMD and T-score measured from the lumbar spine but not with BMD and T-score measured from the femoral neck in postmenopausal women.
