The curved beam bridge exhibits lateral displacement during construction and operation. Taking a curved beam bridge as an example, the status of lateral displacement of the bridge is investigated in detail in this paper. To understand the mechanism of the curved beam lateral displacement, further to determine the curved beam lateral displacement under temperature effect, using ANSYS software to establish solid element model of the curved beam, steady state thermal analysis method is applied to analyze temperature field. Based on the analysis, the lateral displacement under temperature effect is analyzed. Then in order to further explain the lateral displacement mechanism, to discuss the frictional force causing the residual deformation of the rubber bearing to make the lateral displacement of the curved beam, the mechanical mechanism of curved beam under temperature effect is approximately analyzed. On the basis of clarifying the mechanism of lateral displacement, the paper puts forward the reinforcement measures for the curved beam bridge. In order to verify the treatment effect, long-term displacement monitoring is performed on the bridge. Numerical studies and monitoring data show that temperature is the main factor that causes the lateral displacement. Monitoring data over the past year shows that the displacement of the bearing is less than the value of allowable displacement after the reinforcement measures are adopted, and the bridge is in a safe state.

As a result of adopting isolated bearings, it is inevitable to increase the lateral displacement of the superstructure and the chance of girder falling. However, the shear keys that just satisfies the structural design is far from meeting the requirements of displacement of isolated bridge restrictions. On account of this, given the nonlinear characteristics of bearings and the restrainer, the authors make the study on the "damping rubber with coupling collar" restrainer, and then establish isolation system model of continuous beam bridge with finite element software named Midas. Meanwhile, the effect of the restrainer on the dynamic response of isolated bridges is presented by time-history analysis, which reveals the great value in the application of limiting displacement of isolated bridge.

The responses of flat reinforced concrete (RC) floor slabs with openings subjected to horizontal in-plane cyclic loads in addition to vertical service loads were investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA). A finite element model (FEM) was designed to perform a parametric analysis. The effects of opening sizes (7%, 14%, 25%, and 30% of the total area of the slab), opening shapes (elliptical, circular, L-shaped, T-shaped, cross, and rectangular), and location on the hysteretic behavior of the floor slab were considered. The research indicated that openings in RC floor slabs reduce the energy absorption capacity and stiffness of the floor slab. The inclusion of 30% opening on the floor slab causes a 68.5%, 47.3%, and 45.6% drop in lateral load capacity, stiffness, and lateral displacement, respectively, compared to the floor slab with no openings. The flat RC floor slab with a circular opening shape has increased efficiency. The placement of the openings is more desirable by positioning the openings at the intersection of two-column strips.

Line heating is an important plate bending process that has been adopted in shipyards for more than 60 years. This paper presents the results of a numerical and experimental study on the residual deformation and stress distribution in the plate forming process using the line heating method. In this paper, a finite element model was used to simulate the heating process, and the model was validated using experimental results. The model was then used to analyze the deformation and stress distributions in the heating and non-heating region. The impact of line heating and sequence of heating on both sides of a steel plate was discussed. The findings of the study show that the compression stress generated help to increase the shrinkage of line heating process. This study presents a valuable reference for similar thermal process.

Natural frequencies are of great value to bridge structural design, health monitoring and detection. Related research data show that the ambient temperature can affect the natural frequencies of the continuous box-girder bridges. In order to research the effect of temperature on the bridge structure and conclude the influence law, theoretical analysis of temperature effect on the natural frequencies of the continuous box girder bridges is conducted based on the stochastic subspace identification. First, the finite element model of the bridge is built to conduct thermal-structural coupling analysis. Then regard the analysis results as the original state, and exert white noise excitation on the structure to obtain the dynamic response of the structure. And then analyze the dynamic response based on the stochastic subspace identification and calculate the natural frequencies of the bridges under the temperature effect. At last, based on the practical project of one 3-span continuous box-girder bridge, the validity and the reliability of this method is verified.

The exact characterization of the wheel–rail normal contact situations is essential for its wear, fatigue, and guidance analysis. To simulate this contact, numerous input parameters are required. Many of them have to be estimated. The aim of this sensitivity analysis was to investigate the direct effects and interactions of the input parameters on the contact pressure distribution of a freight wagon wheel on a straight track. For this purpose, a finite element model was parametrized in such a way that all the parameters were continuous. This research demonstrates that the output parameters of the wheel–rail contact simulations have a broad deviation and the input variable with the most influence on the contact form and position is the lateral displacement of the wheelset. Nevertheless, the profile shape of the wheel and rail, the wheel radius, and the relative wheel–rail inclination are important input parameters as well, and also need to be considered for exact simulations of the wheel–rail contact. On the other hand, the deviation of material parameters of wheel and rail steel can be neglected.

The paper presents a finite element model of the arch with a transverse, one-edge crack. A part of the cracked arch is modelled by a curved beam finite element with the crack. Parts of the arch without the crack are modelled by noncracked curved beam finite elements. The crack occurring in the arch is nonpropagating and open. It is assumed that the crack changes only the stiffness of the arch, whereas the mass is unchanged. The method of the formation of the stiffness matrix of a curved beam finite element with the crack is presented. The effects of the crack location and its length on the changes of the in-plane natural frequencies and mode shapes of the clamped-clamped arch are studied.
